If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.
Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly highclass Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least signs of anxiety.
The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration cards to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge.
The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss at the rate. From then on they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly.
With so many loopholes(漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty advantages”. But the strange thing is that all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fares after they have attended to their business and that not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”.
24.The underlined words in Paragraph 5 means to “________”.
    A. be ready to help others B. make good use of one's friends
    C. be a little ahead of others D. gain something at other's expense
25.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
    A. While taking a taxi in Finland, you can get off without first paying your fare.
    B. In a big hotel in Finland, you can enjoy free meals if you're living in the hotel.
    C. The bosses in Finland pay the employees according to the registration of their working hours.
    D. The workers are always honest with their working hours.
26.We can learn from the passage that ________.
    A. the Finnish society is of very high moral(道德的)level
    B. there are many loopholes in everyday life in Finland
    C. in Finland, most taxi drivers will not charge you anything

On the day the tornado hit, there was no sign severe weather was on its way—the sky was blue and the sun had been out. My husband Jimmy and I were watching TV upstairs.
No sooner had we got the coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. We had three flights of steps to get through to get to the relative safety of the first floor.
As we struggled to reach the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Pieces of glass that looked like crushed ice flew everywhere. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch flew over our heads, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us.
By the time I reached the closet, Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I grasped Jimmy’s arm and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and head were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.
“Hold on! Hold on!” he yelled. But there was nothing in this closet to hold on to.
All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over. Jimmy said he’d go outside to check. “No,” I said. “Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me.”

Microsoft has developed a new smart phone app that identify eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease (运动神经元症) to communicate with others from a phone.
The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements immediately and change them into letters, words and sentences.
For people suffering from ALS (渐冻症) , also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.
“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS are expensive, not strong under sunlight, and require frequent re-adjustment and material, relatively steady setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.
“To ease off the disadvantages, we created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, strong, portable and easy to learn.”
The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate.
The sticker shows four grids of letters, which each is equal to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.
Zhang’s research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May. (265)
32.According to the passage, people with ALS can communicate with others by __________.
    A.eye contact B.body language C.hand shaking D.language expression
33.Which of the following is NOT the advantage of GazeSpeak?
    A.cheap B.unsteady C.accessible D.learnable
34.How do the speakers use the app?
A.They point at the letters they want on the phone.
B.They predict the word or sentence they try to say.
C.They turn to the listeners to speak out the letters for them.
D.They look in the four directions to choose the grid of letters.
35.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.People Suffering From ALS Needs Help
B.Smartphone App Helps ALS Sufferers Speak With Eyes
C.How Do People With ALS Communicate With Others
D.Researchers Develop The New Smartphone App

Nowadays people tend to digitalise everything from watches to fridges. It seems you can choose any item labeled as “smart”. 36 However, there are plenty that can be used to reduce emissions and save money.
If you’re a part of the digitalisation movement, you might be interested in the concept of smart homes. It means that every element of your house can be controlled from a panel on the wall or your phone. 37 Use your mobile to power them on or off,and you may feel truly modern or truly lazy. Asides from the benefits of living a more comfortable life, this presents an opportunity to cut down on your electrical bills.
Electricity generation today represents 31% of total global fossil fuel use and around 40% of all energy-related CO2 emissions. 38 It is considered as the first step to prevent global climate change. Connect a smart thermometer to the heating and cooling system and set a specific temperature at which the heating begins to work. Doing so, the room will be at a desired temperature when necessary and switches on a power-saving mode when not occupied. Similarly, by installing a CO2 sensor, you can have an automated ventilation (通风) system. 39 .
In a 150,000m2 office complex near Munich, called Campeon, energy costs of up to 117,067 Euro were saved after the use of environmental control devices this year. In this way, they are contributing to a large decrease in CO2 emissions. Clearly, smart homes are about much more than just living a comfortable life. 40 .
    A. It is actually about living a green life.
    B. Smart devices have been installed worldwide nowadays.
    C. It starts working only when CO2 concentrations reach a certain limit.
    D. There seem to be an ocean of such so-called “smart” inventions.
    E. Bearing this in mind, measures should be taken to make buildings more energy-efficient.
    F. Alternative energy must be discovered before the fossil fuel runs out in the future.
    G. This includes basics such as heating and lighting and many other appliances.

We walked along a small path beyond the main trails increase our chances of seeing wildlife. Small wild flowers grew up through the snow, underneath we could hear a small stream. Little animals stood still to avoid from being noticed. It was the most beautiful sight that I had ever seen.
    第二节:书面表达(满分25分)
    Dear Mike,
How are you doing these days?
Aimed at providing a platform where students can have a chance to exchange and make use of their books, the annual campus book fair will soon be held in our school. The fair will attract a huge crowd from the entire school, who are to sell, purchase and exchange their books with their peers.
As a regular visitor, I’ve found myself increasingly drawn by the fair. For one thing, the fair exhibits books of hundreds of types on diverse topics, motivating us to further develop our reading habits and helping to broaden our horizons. For another, most books are sold at a lower price than what the bookstores offer.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to host such a book fair better.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

M: How are your driving lessons coming along?
W: Just fine. In a few more weeks, I’ll be able to drive quite well.
    (Text 2)
W: What did Professor Lee think about your paper?
M: Oh, I got quite a good grade but there was a long written comment at the end of it. He said I could have spent more time on the background!
    (Text 3)
W: Well, Peter. I’m glad you succeeded in persuading me to spend the day on the beach.
M: Yes, but the beach is so crowded. We just can’t seem to find a place to put down our blanket.

    (Text 4)
W: Hi, Mike. I saw your brother in the park yesterday. Isn’t he usually at work at the supermarket during the week?
M: Normally he’d be there. But he’s on holiday this week. And he’ll board a plane bound for London in just several minutes.
    (Text 5)
W: Where were you yesterday afternoon?
M: I was at Ken’s house. We didn’t go out because there was a baseball game broadcast live.
W: It’s not surprising that no one answered my call.
    M: Oh, I’m sorry.
    (Text 6)
W: Here is a picture of you when you were four years old.
M: I look stupid. Why was I wearing that silly hat?
W: It was Halloween. Your dad and I wanted you to wear it to his company party.
    M: Why?
W: Because you were lovely and we wanted to show you off. You know, I’ll always remember you that way. You were such a beautiful child.
    M: Well, I’m not a child now.
    (Text 7)
W: I’m taking a spinning class at the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
M: What’s a spinning class? Is that where you just run around in circles like kids or something?
W: No, silly. Everyone in the class rides exercise bicycles together while the instructor gives us directions. There are also different kinds of music that we ride along to.
M: Oh, I see. Well, I think riding a bike outside would be much more fun, and it would probably be better exercise, too.
    (Text 8)
W: Good morning! You’re up early. It’s not even 8:00 yet.
M: Well, I have a report to finish at work for this afternoon. Anyway, I didn’t get much sleep after being woken up by those two guys arguing in the street last night. Did you hear them?
W: Oh, maybe. Was it around 3:00 in the morning?
M: Actually, it was at 2:00—I looked at my clock when they woke me up. Some of our neighbors were yelling at them to keep it down.
W: I thought I was having a dream. Anyway, do you want some of this?
    M: What’s that?
W: It’s soybean milk. I’ve been drinking it every morning for the past two weeks. It’s my new routine.
M: Oh, I often just have some coffee.
    (Text 9)
M: How do you usually get to work in the morning?
W: I try to ride my bike most of the time. Of course, when I’m running late, I take the subway.
M: I always seem to be five or ten minutes late for everything. I drive to work every day, so if the traffic is bad, I have to think of a new way to apologize to my boss for being late.
W: Does your boss yell at you if you’re late?
M: No, not really. He knows that I live far away. I stay late whenever I don’t make it on time in the morning, and it probably helps that I earn a fair amount of money for the company year after year.
W: Have you ever considered moving into the city to be closer to your job?
M: To be honest, I would rather change jobs than houses! My wife loves our house, especially since she works from home. Our kids are in great schools. And on the weekends, there are a million things for us to do as a family.
W: It does sound nice. For me, though, I love living in the city. There are so many cultural activities, and I love not having to drive.
M: Yeah, driving is pretty stressful sometimes.
W: I think it’s also easier to live in the city when you don’t have kids. If I were a mom, I’d probably live closer to you.
M: Well, you and Timothy might want to think about getting started with that…
W: You sound just like my mother-in-law!
    (Text 10)
M: Welcome back to Natural Medicine. We turn our attention to the subject of headaches, which everyone gets from time to time. We asked 100 people what they did to deal with their headaches. As you can see on this chart here, the most common answer was “Take headache pills”. The next most common answer was “Rubbing my head”.“Sleeping” and “Taking a shower”, were some of the other responses. But the best cure for a headache that we know of was all the way down at No. 10, so it’s something that most people don’t think about doing —“Drinking water”. It’s true: headaches are often the body’s way of telling you that it’s thirsty, and a glass of water might be all you need to feel like yourself again. Of course, some people get very serious headaches because they are sensitive to light, sound, or certain smells. These headaches are different, and many people have to take strong medicine in order to make them go away. If you hurt your head and have a headache afterwards, it is important that you see a doctor right away, as this could be due to a more serious injury. But if it’s a normal headache, try drinking some water before you reach for those pills. It might be just what you need. OK, we’ll be right back after these commercials…
