Carry-on Bag Rules

When travelling on China Southern planes, we ask our customers to follow our simple bag rules.

---Each passenger is allowed to bring one bag onto the plane.

---Weight limit: Each carry-on bag may weigh up to 10 kilos.

---Size limit: Each carry-on bag can be up to 110cm long, 60cm high and 30cm wide.

---Additional bags and oversized/overweight bags may be allowed on the plane if there is enough room. There will be a fee for such bags (see the table below). Please note that if your bag breaks more than one rule then you must pay a fee for each rule broken.

Safety Rules

For the safety of our passengers, the following items must not be taken onto the plane:

Note:

If you have any liquid medicines over 100ml that you must use during your flight, please contact  our customer service manager on 34533566 to make arrangements at least 24 hours before your departure. You will need to have a doctor's letter explaining why you need the medicine.

*No bag over 15 kilos will be allowed on the plane. **No bag over 150cm long or 80cm high may be taken on the plane. Passengers must put such bags in the plane's storage.

I remember the day when I first learned to ride a bike. It was a frightening, yet fun experience. My granddad was the one who taught me, and he helped me when I got hurt. The first time I got on a bike, I had no idea what I was doing, and just about everything went wrong. My granddad told me to just put my feet on the pedals and start pedaling(骑自行车). He also told me he would hold onto the back of the bike the whole time, yet he didn't.

As soon as I started trying to balance myself, he let go. I happened to look back just then. I was scared to death that I was going to fall and hurt myself. When I was scared, my mind went blank from pedaling, and I just wanted off. I forgot how to use the brakes(车闸) and fell right off the bike. My granddad kept encouraging me to get up and try again, and after about 15 minutes, I finally stopped crying, got up and tried again.

As soon as I started pedaling again, my pants got caught in the chain, and I fell flat on my face and hit my nose. Since that happened, my granddad decided to call it a day and try again the next morning. The next morning I woke up bright and early, and was very eager to try to ride my bike. My nose felt better, so I wasn't that afraid of falling anymore.

Though I knew there were a lot of difficulties on the way to mastering the skills in riding a bike, I believed I could do well with my granddad's help. After all, riding a bike was what I wanted to do eagerly.

Clothes can make phone calls, play music, dial your pal's number, keep you warm during cold weather and operate your computer?

This is not a fantasy. A British company, called Electrotextiles, has created a wide range of clothes-clothes that have minds of their own! Scientists, working for the company, have invented a kind of cloth that can be mixed with flexible electronic materials to create intelligent clothing. The results are electronic garments(衣服).

If you think the wearer has to be wired to different devices, think again. These designer clothes are wire-free, soft to touch and washable!! Like any electronic device, these high-tech clothes have to be powered. Currently, a tiny nine-volt battery serves the purpose. But the researchers hope that in the near future the clothes will produce electricity by using body heat. These clothes are 100 percent shock proof, they say.

The Electrotextiles team has also created the world's first cloth keyboard. This keyboard can be sewn into your trousers or skirt. To use this device, you will have to sit down and tap on your lap! These 'lap-tap' gadgets(器具)are all set to take over laptop computers!

Another useful garment is the shirt-cum-mobile phone. It enables drivers to chat comfortably with others at the wheel! Other popular electronic wear include the denim(牛仔布)jacket with flexible earphones sewn into the hood(风帽)and the electronic ski jacket with a built-in heater. The ski jacket is also programmed to send signals to a satellite. This technology is known as global positioning system and can be used to track lost skiers and wandering kids.

Experts are warning about the risks of extreme picky eating after a teenager developed permanent sight loss after living on a diet of chips and crisps.

Since leaving primary school, the teen had been eating only French fries, white bread, as well as an occasional slice of ham or a sausage.

The adolescent, who cannot be named, had seen his doctor at the age of 14 because he had been feeling tired and unwell. At that time he was diagnosed with lack of vitamin B12 and put on supplements, but he did not stick with the treatment or improve his poor diet.

Three years later, he was taken to the Bristol Eye Hospital because of progressive sight loss. Dr Denize Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said: "His diet was only a portion of chips from the local fish and chip shop every day. He also used to snack on chips, white bread and sometimes slices of ham or sausage, and not really any fruit and vegetables."

The teen explained this as a dislike to certain kinds of food that he really could not tolerate, and so chips and crisps were really the only types of food that he wanted and felt that he could eat.

Dr Atan rechecked the young man's vitamin levels and said “he was low in B12 as well as some other important vitamins and minerals-copper, selenium and vitamin D. He was not over or underweight, but was severely malnutritional from his eating disorder. He had lost minerals from his bone, which was really quite shocking for a boy of his age."

"He had blind spots right in the middle of his vision," said Dr Atan's assistant. "That means he can't drive and would find it really difficult to read, watch TV or recognize faces, but he can walk around on his own because he has got peripheral(周边的)vision.

The condition the young man has is treatable if diagnosed early. Left too long, however, the nerve fibres in the optic nerve(视神经)die and the damage becomes permanent.

Now he has been put on vitamin supplements and sent to a dietitian and a specialist mental health team.

Last year, my friend and I went to visit the Yellow Mountain. We carried two backpacks, that turned out to be pretty heavier for the hike.
