It seemed like a typical November day two years ago, as I walked out of Walgreens. It was just a month after my grandmother had passed away and I spent my days running useless errands(杂事;差事)hoping to distract me from the pain.
As I attempted to walk out of the store, I felt frustrated by everything around me. I was angry because I coaldn't even remember what 1 went there to buy so I ended up spending over $ 20 on nonsense just to waste time and money, both of which I didn’t have.
Feeling depressed and hopeless, I began walking to my car. Every step seemed exhausted, and every step was another to survive. Suddenly, a woman driving right by my side rolled down her window. “Excuse me," she said loudly. Thinking she was going to ask for my parking spot, I simply pointed to my car. “No, excuse me,” she said again.
As I got closer, I was astonished—was this my grandmother’s nurse, Adu, who lived with her during her final months? I soon realized that she wasn't, although the resemblance was hard io believe Then, I realized that this Adu look-alike was searching for something in her bag. Surprisingly, I was overcome by a sense a relief that led me to be patient the entire time the lady was searching. Others would be nervous by a stranger reaching in their bag, but I wasn't. Under a mess of makeup, money, pens, and other belongings, she finally reached to the very bottom of her bag and handed me a three page booklet. “It looks like you need this," she said calmly with a warm smile on her face.
I looked down at the mysterious and obviously used brochure and on the front cover in big bold letters read “What Hope for Dead Loved Ones?”
I felt a sense of relaxation as 1 opened the first page. It explained how people pass away, but their spirits remain with us. It was a random day in November when my life turned back around and I began to feel hope again. It was real. It was a miracle.
    24. Why did the author feel angry in the second paragraph?
    A.Because he was too exhausted.
B.Because he always had a poor memory.
C.Because he didn’t have enough money or time.
D.Because he was so painful that he bought something useless.
    25. The underlined word “resemblance” in fourth paragraph probably means .
    A.Difference B. Surprise C. Similarity D. Appearance
    26. What did the author do while the lady was searching for something?
    A. He waited patiently.
    B. He was observing others.
C.He was too surprised to move.
D.He felt relived about his grandmother's death.
    27. What can we infer from the lady?
    A. She misses her grandmother.
    B. She knows the author before.
    C. She has lost someone in her life as well.
    D. She works in the same hospital with Adu.
    C
Having an older brother or sister comes with plenty of benefits. Big brothers and sisters tend to look out for their younger siblings(兄弟姐妹),and despite the occasional rocky moments here and there, many siblings have life*long close relationships. However, a new study finds an interesting downside : children with older brothers take longer when it comes to developing language skills.
The study, conducted by a group of researchers in Paris, France, builds upon the earlier research that had already established that having older siblings is associated with poor linguistic development. Now, researchers say they have come to a more specific conclusion: only children with an older brother exhibit these linguistic(语言的)difficulties.
One would assume that children with older brothers would grow up around more conversation on a daily basis, thus speeding up their language development. Yet researchers say such children actually take longer than their older brothers to begin developing these skills.
Researchers studied more than 1,000 children from birth to the age of five-and-a-half years old. Each child’s language skills were tested at ages 2, 3,and 5. 5, using tests specially designed to measure numerous aspects of language development such as vocabulary, syntax(句法),and verbal(语言的)reasoning.
What the research team discovered was significant: children with an older brother had,on average, a two-month delay in their language development compared to studied children with an older sister,
As far as explaining this phenomenon, researchers have proposed two hypotheses(假设).The firsi is that older sisters tend to talk more often than older brothers, which would make up for parents potentially being less present than they were for their first child. The second hypothesis is that older sisters usually compete with their siblings less than older brothers for their parents’ love.
As of now, the study’s authors say they can’t say for certain why children with older brothers have a harder time developing language skills. In the future they would like to investigate if culture or location impacts the results of these studies.
    28. People may enjoy having brothers and sisters because .
A.Siblings may affect the speed of language learning
    B. They share the happy moments on rocky mountains
    C. Older brothers and sisters will take care of younger ones
    D. All siblings will stay close to each other no matter what happens
    29. What does the previous research suggest about older siblings?
A.Many children prefer having brothers and sisters.
    B. It will affect the younger one’s language development.
    C. Older brothers may have something to do with the linguistic difficulties.
    D. Children with older brothers would grow up around more conversation on a daily basis.
30.Why do children with older brothers experience delay in language development?
    A. Older brothers are eager for more attention.
    B. Parents tend to foucs more on the first child.
    C. Children with older brothers arc usually less competitive.
D.Older sisters gets less love from their parents compared to older brothers.
31.Which one is the best title for the passage?
    A. Older siblings: blessing or disaster?
    B. The delay of your children*s language development.
    C. Why do children suffer from poor language skills?
    D. Older brothers may affect younger ones in language learning.
    D
Thirty-two people watched Kitty Genovese being killed right beneath their windows,She was their neighbor. Yet none of the 32 helped her. Not one even called the police. Was this on gunman’s cruelty? Was it lack of feeling about one’s fellow man?
Not so, say scientists John Barley and Bib Fatane. These men went beyond the headlines to seek the reasons why people didn't act. They found that a person has to go through two steps before he can help. First he has to notice that is an emergency.
Suppose you see a middle-aged man fall to the side*walk. Is he having a heart attack? Is he in a coma from diabetes(糖尿病)? Or is he about to sleep off a drunk?
Second, and more important, the person faced with an emergency must feel personally responsible. He must feel that he must help, or the person won’t get the help he needs.
The researchers found that a lot depends on how many people arc around. They had college students in to be tested. Some came alone. Some came with one or two others. And some came in large groups. The receptionist started them off on the tests. Then she went into the next room. There was a curtain between the testing room and the room into which she went. Soon the students heard a scream, the noise of file cabinets falling and a cry for help. All of this had been pre-recorded on a tape-recorder.
Eight out of ten of the students taking the tesi alone acted to help. Of the students in pairs, only two out of ten helped. Of the students in groups, none helped.
In other words, in a group, Americans often fail to act. They feel that others will act. They, themselves, needn’t. They do not feel any direct responsibility.
Are people bothered by situations where people are in trouble? Yes. Scientists found that the people were emotional, they sweated, and they had trembling hands. They felt the other person’s trouble. But they did not act. Their actions were shaped by the actions of those they were with.
32.The purpose of this passage is .
A.to persuade people to act in emergencies.
    B. to expose how people feel in emergencies
C.to tell what people should do in emergencies
    D. to explain why people fail to act in emergencies
    33. The experiment shows that people will act in emergencies when .
    A. they are alone
    B. they are in pairs
    C. they are in groups
    D. they are with their friends
    34. The main reason why people fail to act when they stay together is that .
    A. they are afraid of emergencies
    B. others will act if they themselves hesitate
    C. they are unwilling to get themselves involved
    D. they have no direct responsibility for those who need help
    35. What is the author's attitude towards people who do not act in emergencies?
    A. Critical. B. Neutral. C.Supportive. D. Sympathetic.

    Possible version:
    Dear Peter,
Glad to hear from you. Since you asked me about the National Day celebrations this year, I am honored to tell you some details.
It was in order to show our love for the motherland that my school held a singing competition the day before the National Day. Every class was required to choose a song about loving our motherland to compete against each other and we practiced a lot before the final competition. Without doubt all the students tried their best to sing well. Owing to our efforts, my class won the first prize in the end, which we thought was the most significant gift for our country.
On October 1st, there was a grand Chinese military parade on the Tiananmen Square to celebrate the 70th birthday of our country. Most people in China watched the live broadcast of it on TV or on the Internet, which was supposed to be one of the most popular events during the 7-day holiday.
In a word, never have I experienced a more unforgettable holiday before. How I wish you had come to China and watched the parade with me at that time!
    Best wishes!
    Yours

M: Are you going to the first floor too, Madam?
W: I am going to the parking lot. Could you please help me push the P2 button?
    Text 2
M: This laptop costs two thousand dollars, but I only have twelve hundred.
W: Don't worry, I can lend you the rest.
    Text 3
W: How was the party last night?
M: It was too crowded and the food was gone before I got there.
W: What time did you get home?
M: It was pretty boring so I left at ten and got home before eleven.
    Text 4
M: How was the weather for your hiking trip last Saturday?
W: It rained a little in the morning, but got sunny in the afternoon.
M: Did you have a lot of fun?
    W: Sure.
    Text 5
W: The new clothes shop has a variety of styles, but everyone does their shopping on Saturday so there aren't enough changing rooms.
M: And I heard the prices are really high.
    Text 6
W: I’ve got two tickets for a volleyball match this evening. Why don't you come with me?
M: Uh. No, thanks. I'm interested in basketball and football. And you know, there is an important football game on TV tonight.
W: Oh, you don’t know what you're missing?
    M: Don't I? Why?
W: It's very fast, with lots of action, and very exciting.
    M: Really? Who's playing?
W: Two of the best women's teams in the world, one from Finland and the other from Belgium. By the way, Brazilian team is my favorite.
    M: Mmm, it sounds exciting.
    W: Yes, it is!
    Text 7
W: So, this is the kitchen...I keep the dishes in the cupboards above the electric cooker. In the bottom ones, I keep all the cleaning supplies. We have a microwave above the stove.
M: All right. I don't cook much, anyway. Is there a specific time you use the kitchen?
W: I don't really have any specific rules. Feel free to use it whenever you need it.
M: OK, got it. And what about bills and house supplies?
W: We split the gas, water, and electricity bills. As far as supplies, we usually take turns from month to month. This month, it's my turn to buy. Next month, it's yours.
    Text 8
M: Have you tried that new restaurant downtown? It looks fancy.
W: No, I haven’t been there yet. What type of food do they serve?
    M: I think it's Italian.
W: I don' t like Italian food very much. I prefer Japanese or Indian food. But I guess I could give it a try.
M: I can make a reservation for some night this week.
W: Okay. Monday and Wednesday are better because I'm off work early on those days.
M: I'll see if they can take us either of those days. What about Friday or Saturday?
W: Saturday could work, but I thought we had Sara's party to go to this weekend. We haven't seen her in a long time - not since her wedding! Isn’t her party on Saturday?
M: Yeah, you're right. Then Monday is probably the best because I have an early work meeting and will be home by the afternoon.
W: Yeah. Monday is the best for me too, actually, I like to go to the gym on Tuesdays after work, anyway.
    Text 9
M: We have Molly Taylor in the studio today. Molly is arranging a holiday course to teach children a variety of activities. Molly, this is the second year for the course, isn't it?
W: Yes. It was for six weeks last year. This year it will be for seven, since some schools finish term a week early. And in fact, the two private schools in the town have an eight-week summer holiday.
M: What was last year’s course like?
W: There were a few problems. We didn't have enough staff to look after all the children who wanted to attend. And then there was such a lot of rain that we couldn't go outside.
M: So what activities can the children look forward to this year?
W: The course is currently available for children aged eight to thirteen. There will be art and music classes, as there were last year. We considered putting in some adventure sports, such as rock climbing, but decided not to in the end because they would have made the course more expensive. Instead, we’re introducing some fun projects, such as putting on a talent show.
    M: Wonderful! I hope it's a success!

Doctors at the famous Cambridge University think that hip-hop music can help depressed and mentally ill people. They say with "hip-hop treatment”, many of the words to the hip-hop songs can reach out to people with emotional problems. A team of doctors wrote a report about this in a special medical magazine. The doctors said a lot of hip-hop music speaks of getting over hardships and big difficulties in life. The report on hip-hop and mental health says hip-hop artists use their talents to describe their world and be free. There’s often a message of hope in the lyrics. The doctors chose five hip-hop songs for the treatment. One of them is “the Message” by Grandmaster Flash. Another is called “Juicy” by the Notorious BIG. This tells people they can be successful even if others say they can't. BIG explains how teachers said he would be nothing, but then he became a superstar.
