     Dear Irene,

Thanks for your letter of 20th December to Tom and me. Tom’s mother sent it to us here in England. I thought I had reply myself since, as you know, your brother is not good at writing letters.

You asked whether Tom’s application for a scholarship has been successful. As you can see, it was. He is doing a one-year postgraduate course in world history here at Lancaster University. The house we live in is near the university, we have to buy a used car which is necessary because the bus service here is very poor.

We arrived in England at the beginning of September, and stayed her for three weeks with my cousin Jeff, who owns a restaurant here. This is the first time he had met my husband. Then we went to Cambridge for a week, where Tom had to attend a meeting and after that we came up to Lancaster and hand two weeks to find somewhere to live and generally got organized before Tom’s course began.

The weather has been quite a change from home. Last week we had some snow, the first we had ever seen. We went outside and threw snowballs at each other, just like children.

We got on well with most of the English people we have met, although we had some difficulty at first understanding the northern accent.

Among the four skills in learning English, which one of these is the “odd man out”? The answer is speaking. For the other three, you can do alone on your own. _____36_____ Speaking to yourself can be “dangerous” because men in white coats may come and take you away.

Where can you see people speak English?____37______

     At school

If you pay to go to a language school, you should use the opportunity to speak. If your teacher asks you to speak in pairs or groups with other students, try to say as much as possible. ______38______ Just speak!

    Conversation Clubs

Many cities around the world have conversation clubs where people can exchange one language for another. Look in your local newspaper to find a conversation club near you. There are usually free although some may charge a small entrance fee.

     _____39______

Even if you don’t want to buy anything, you can ask questions about products that interest you in a shop. “ How much does cost?” “ Can I pay by cheque?” often you can start a real conversation---and it cost you nothing!

    Cafes and Bars

There are often American, Britain, Irish, and Australian cafes and bars in many large cities. If you can find one, you will probably meet many people speaking English as a first or second language.

Language is all around you. Everywhere you go, you can find language. Shop names, street names, advertisements, notices, and car numbers…...when you walk down the street, practice reading the words and numbers that you see. Say them to yourself. It’s not exactly a conversation, but it will help you to “think” in English.____40_________

    Songs and Videos

Repeat the words of an English song singing to the music until it becomes automatic. It’s good practice for your memory and for the mouth muscles that you need for English.

Above all, speak as much as possible! Make as many mistakes as possible! When you know that you have a mistake, you know that you have made progress.

        A.  And how can you practice speaking when you are alone?

    第四部分 写作(共两节,满分35分)

    第一节 短文改错(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

It is known that nothing is more important and precious than time. The good old

proverb “Time is money” remind us that time is valuably. However, it is pity that

some people don’t realize that waste time is actually equal to killing themselves.

They always regret having made great achievements. One of the reasons may be that they do not make good use of times. Therefore, in order to be successfully, they should first get into the habit of being on time. Don’t put on what can be done today until tomorrow. Don’t wait for, because you don’t know how long it will take that you put off your plan.
