    The Alexander Technique
Until earlier this year, I didn’t know anything about the Alexander technique—and saw no reason to think I should. One day, the backache I regularly suffered was more painful. I was brought up to think that the preferred way of dealing with aches is to do nothing and hope they’ll go away, but I eventually went to the doctor. After examining me, he said, “You actually have bad posture (姿势). Go off and learn the Alexander technique.” Three months later I could walk straighter and sit better.
The Alexander technique is a way of learning how you can get rid of harmful tension in your body. The teaching focuses on the neck, head and back. It trains you to use your body less severely and carry out the movements that we do all the time with less effort. There is little effort in the lessons themselves, which sets apart the Alexander technique from Yoga or Pilates, which are exercise-based. A typical lesson involves standing in front of a chair and learning to sit and stand with minimum effort. You spend some time lying on a bench with your knees bent to straighten the spine (脊椎) and relax your body while the teacher moves your arms and legs to train you to move them correctly.
The technique helps to break the bad habits accumulated over years. Try folding your arms the opposite way to normal. This is an example of a habit the body has formed which can be hard to break. Many of us carry our heads too far back. The head weighs four to six kilos, so any inappropriate posture can cause problems for the body. The technique teaches you to let go of the muscles holding the head back, allowing itto go back to its natural place on the top of our spines.
So who was Alexander and how did he come up with the technique? Frederick Alexander, an Australian actor born in 1869, found in his youth that he had vocal (声音的) problems during performances. He analyzed himself and realized his posture was bad. He worked on improving it, with excellent results. He brought his technique to London and opened a teacher-training school, which is still successful today.
So if you’re walking along the road one day with shoulders bent forward, feeling weighed down by your troubles, give a thought to the Alexander technique. It will help you walk tall again.
    4. What does the author suggest in Paragraph 1?
    A. She felt no better after the treatment.
    B. She got bored with the Alexander technique.
    C. She was skeptical about the doctor’s method.
    D. She was unwilling to seek treatment for her backache.
    5. What is the principle of the Alexander technique?
    A. Physical tension shouldn’t be completely relieved.
    B. The technique shouldn’t be combined with other exercises.
    C. The practice of the technique shouldn’t be attempted alone.
    D. Familiar physical actions shouldn’t be done with much effort.
    6. What can we learn about Frederick Alexander?
    A. He managed to recover his vocal powers. B. He was eager to make a name for himself.
    C. He developed a form of exercise for actors. D. He had to leave home to develop his technique.
    7. What is the main idea of the passage?
    A. The occurrence of back pain is widespread.
    B. Alexander improved the technique to treat body pain.
    C. The Alexander technique helps overcome posture problems.
    D. People with back pain are victims of inappropriate postures.

    C
On a recent spring morning. Susan Alexander, a retired government intelligence analyst, left her Maryland home, climbed into her Volkswagen Passat and drove about three miles to pick up two strangers. She battled rush-hour traffic on the Capital Beltway and George Washington Memorial Parkway before dropping them off at Reagan National Airport. She didn’t earn a cent for her trouble, and that was the point.
Alexander is a member of the Silver Spring Time Bank — one of more than 100 such exchanges around the world trying to build community by exchanging time credits for services instead of dollars and cents. “ I have time,” she said. “ I like giving the gift of time to other people.”
In Alexander’s case, passengers Mary and Al Liepold were grateful for the ride, but it wasn’t charity. Mary, a retired writer and editor for nonprofit organizations, used time credits she banked by editing work and baking. The Liepolds, senior citizens who don’t drive, cashed in their credits to catch a flight to Montreal for a five-day vacation.
Without money changing hands or shifting between virtual accounts, the airport drop-off was more like a coffee party than a taxi ride. Driver and passengers chatted about projects they’ve completed for the time bank, and no one raised an eyebrow when Mary said she likes “ to avoid the conventional economy. ”
“ The beauty of this is that you make friends,” Mary Liepold said. “ You don't just get services.”
The Silver Spring Time Bank formed in 2015 and has about 300 members, said co-founder Mary Murphy. Last year, she said, l,000 hours were exchanged for basic home repairs, dog walking, cooking and tailoring, among other services, without the exchange of money. “You get to save that money that you would have spent,” she said. “ You get to meet somebody else in your community and get to know that person. That's a bonus which’s part of an exchange.”
A deal performed partly to make friends would seem to go against classical economics and one of Benjamin Franklin's most memorable sayings: “Time is money.” But to those at the forefront of modern time-banking, that is the real appeal of the deal.
    8. What’s the main purpose of the Silver Spring Time Bank?
    A. To better serve the local economy.
    B. To help people get to know more friends.
    C. To provide the elderly with timely financial help.
    D. To build community by exchanging time credits for services.
    9. How did the Liepolds pay for their ride?
    A. In cash. B. By credit card. C. By cheque. D. With time credits.
    10. What does the underlined word “ that ” in the last paragraph refer to?
    A. Making friends. B. Classical economics.
    C. Modern time-banking. D. Franklin’s famous saying.
    11. What is the suitable title for the text?
    A. Time is money B. The more friends, the better.
    C. Giving the gift of time D. Swapping time credits for services

    D
Every year, thousands of new high school graduates pack their bags, move to new cities, and sign papers accepting loans, the money borrowed from a bank or lenders etc., which they might not be able to pay back. Without proper education on personal finance, especially as it relates to paying for college, young adults are guided into improper loan plans that result in years of debt after graduation. In order to set students up to succeed financially, it is important to educate students and parents on their financial options before school in the fall. The best way to support families heading for college is to require that every high school student take a personal finance class before graduation. This will help smooth the transition into adulthood.
The average student takes out at least one loan to cover the costs of their education each year. In 2014 the average student graduating from college carried a negative balance of about $20,000 in debt, which often spread over multiple lenders. Upon graduation, students rarely know exactly how much money they owe, and even though they are in the state of being unable to pay their debts, they cannot wipe out student loans. These students spend much of their adult lives paying off the gradual increasing debts.
A personal finance course would teach students how to manage their income and expenses, while helping to significantly reduce the amount of debt students carry into adulthood. By teaching students how to save money and live within their means, this course will provide the next generation with a foundation to progress financially. Students choosing to get a job straight out of high school would also benefit from finance education for these very reasons. With education on how to manage their finances, all young people will have the knowledge to make healthy decisions, leading them to improve good credit and purchase needed items like cars and homes with skill and confidence.
While not every young person makes financial mistakes, those who do can face years of difficulty trying to get their finances back under control. Rather than help them through these hard times when they happen, we should try to prevent them from happening at all. Making the completion of personal finance coursework a requirement for graduation would ensure that young people are at least aware of the basics of preserving a financial stability.
    12. After graduation from college, many young people ______.
    A. struggle to support their families B. spend years paying off their debts
    C. get through the hard times smoothly D. are able to manage their own finances well
    13. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
    A. Advantages of taking a finance course.
    B. Ways to improve financial credits.
    C. Skills of balancing income and expenses.
    D. Introduction to the education on personal finance.
    14. Having financial knowledge, high school students are probably able to ______.
    A. smooth their way for college B. get out of their financial trap
    C. free from the cost of their college education D. avoid the risk of the future financial trouble
    15. The main purpose of the passage is to_______.
    A. inform and explain B. argue and persuade
    C. analyze and evaluate D. discuss and examine

    V.书面表达范文(25分)
    Dear Allen,
Knowing that you are interested in the school-based course Tea Art, I am writing to share with you some information.
As is known, China is the home of tea. Chinese have formed the habit of drinking tea since ancient times. So in this course you will have a taste of all kinds of teas as well as learn about their history. Besides, a tea ceremony will be performed and you will be given an opportunity to try it yourself. The tea culture has such a significant influence on our society that you will better understand our culture when the course ends. In a word, it is a course worth taking.
I am looking forward to your reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    听力原文:
    (Text 1)
W: When will you leave for Shanghai?
    M: A week later.
W: How long are you staying in there? It's two weeks, isn't it?
M: Two weeks would be fantastic, but unfortunately, I’ve only got ten days.
    (Text 2)
M: I have to go to a meeting now.
W: OK, but there are a couple more points to discuss.
M: Well. call me next week. We can talk over some time then.
W: I will. I'll give you a call on Monday morning.
    (Text 3)
W: I know you are part of the beach clean-up group. So, how's it going?
M: Well, it's been a lot of work so far, but it's been fun. I think picking up rubbish all by myself would pretty boring.
    (Text 4)
M: I would enjoy looking around the bookshop. It's really enjoyable.
W: Me too. I always find the book in the shop or the supermarket and then buy it online! It's often a lot
    cheaper
    (Text 5)
M: So, have you decided about your vacation yet?
W: We re going to Paris this time. I’ve never been to Europe before.
M: Have you traveled a lot?
W: Yeah, I guess so. I’ve traveled in Mexico and Central America And I've been to Asia.
    (Text 6)
W: Oh, honey, we don't have enough money to pay the rent this month. I guess I'd better ask my boss for a raise.
M: Do you think you'll get it?
W:I don't know. But maybe I'd better not take another English course for a while.
M: Gina, listen, you can't stop studying English. This is an English-speaking country. You can't get ahead without English.
    W:I know.
M: I'd better get a part-time job to support our family. I can work at the office during the day and then
    do something else at night.
    (Text 7)
M: Your presentation is on Tuesday 8 September at 10 a.m. Is that OK?
W:An hour earlier would be better for me.
M: Fine. I'll change your time.
    W: Thanks
M: And will you meet Rachel and Sam tomorrow? They asked me this morning
    W: I'll give them a call later
M: OK. So, any plans for tonight?
W: Not really. I'm just going to write a few reports and then eat out.
    (Text 8)
M: So, have you got any plans for the summer?
W:I’ve got a job as a volunteer. I'm going to work on a project to build a school in Kenya in Africa
I'm going to go as soon as the term finishes and I'll be there for two months. I' m hoping to do a little
traveling after I finish but I'm not sure yet. What about you?
M: Well,my parents have offered to pay for me to do a summer course in cooking.
    W: That sounds interesting
M: The thing is, I don't want them to think I can't organize something myself.
W: What would you like to do?
M: I'd like a part-time job related to tourism or restaurants. I've applied for a few and I've got two interviews
so far. I'd love to get a job managing a restaurant. I intend to apply for a few more jobs this weekend.
W: Would you like a job here in Spain?
    M: Oh, here, of course.
    (Text 9)
W: Look at this one It's Mr. White. He really seemed to believe in me and he is the best science teacher that ever.
M:Well, I suppose what I liked was that he made us try out new things. But anyway... have a look at this one.
    W:Oh,that's Sarah.
M: Yeah. Didn't you fall out with her once? At a party or something?
W: More than once, I think. We didn't get on---in fact, nobody at school got on with her.
M: Right, let's move on quickly then! Here, look--- it's our whole class, after a French lesson by Mrs. Taylor, isn't it?
W: Yep. That classroom doesn't bring back too many happy memories, I have to say.
M: But you have a talent for languages. You speak French really well now,and Spanish.
W:Yeah, but the lessons at school weren't for me. I'd say that Mrs. Taylor was skilled at teaching grammar, but we never did any kind of speaking practice.
M: Mmm. Ah well, here's the last one. That's Julia. Don't you remember her? She was really talented at
    sports.
    (Text10)
M: OK, students. For our school trip to the Hong Kong Museum of History, we need a schedule. But before we make a schedule, let's talk about some rules. First, listen to your tour guide. I want to be sure you are learning at the museum, not just looking. Second, take notes. It's good for you to remember everything that you see and taking notes will help.
The bus leaves at exactly 8: 30. Don't be late. At 9: 30. we will arrive at the museum and begin our tour.
First,we will have a short talk with a museum helper, Mrs. Lai. Mrs. Lai is a retired teacher who grew
up in Hong Kong. At 9: 45, we will see a short film. Now, at 10: 15, Mrs. Lai will take us to see the
exhibition. There are two parts. The first part is a collection of materials used by students in years gone
by The second part is about playground games and other activities. At 11: 15, you will visit the traditional
classroom and take a class from Mrs. Lai. At 12: 00, we will have lunch at the museum before getting
back on the bus at 1:00.
Now, to help you prepare, please have a look at these posters from the museum. They tell you much information about the exhibition and what you can expect to see.
