—Free medical care (cost for spectacles, false teeth and doctors’ home visit are not included); 

—One-way international flight ticket for one with a BA degree and round-trip tickets for one with a MA and above, upon completion of a one-year contract (none for a six-month contract and not including pay for the travel to China to begin work).

As a child, I was generally happy, singing and dancing to my favorite songs, smiling and laughing with my friends and family. But as far back as second grade, I noticed a “darkness” about me. I didn’t enjoy participating in many things.

In middle school, things in my life began to get even worse. I began withdrawing from everything I once enjoyed. I was always tired. Everything was horrible. Finally, midway through eighth grade, I was told I had a chemical imbalance, diagnosed (诊断) with clinical depression, and had to take medicine. It took months for me to feel the effects of the medicine.

When I began to feel happy again is when I realized that I had to take the responsibility for getting better myself, rather than relying on medicine. Aristotle said, “To live happily is an inward power of the soul, and I believe that this quote describes what I had to do to achieve happiness. Happiness is a journey. Everyone seems to need different things to be happy.

“The essentials (要素) to happiness are something to love, something to do, and something to hope for, a quote from William Blake sums up what I believe people need to realize to be truly happy in life. People need love. I feel they need their family and their friends more than anything else in the world. People need work to do, something to make them feel they are making a difference in the world. People need to know that more good is to come in the future, so they continue to live for “now” instead of constantly worrying about the bad that could come. Love and hope are happiness.

    4. What do we know about the author in Paragraph 2?

    A. He hated going to sleep because he couldn’t sleep well.

    B. He spent months recovering from the clinical depression.

    C. He was diagnosed with clinical depression in Grade Seven.

    D. He suffered a great deal from clinical depression.

5.what made the author feel happy again?

    A.his understanding of happiness

    B.the medicine’s effect

    C.Aristotle’s words

    D.his family’s love

    6. Which of the following about being truly happy is unnecessary in the author’s opinion?

    A. Love.  B. Ambition.

    C. Hope.  D. Work.

    7. What may be the best title for the text?

    A. The Essentials to Happiness

    B. Ways to Overcome Shortcomings

    C. Everyone Needs to Be Happy

    D. Happiness Is Love

    C

I told my friend Graham that I often cycle two miles from my house to the town centre but unfortunately there is a big hill on the route. He replied, You mean fortunately.” He explained that I should be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided.

My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to complain as I approached it but now I tell myself the following. This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to lose weight and get fit. It will mean that I live longer. This hill is my friend. Finally I comfort myself with the thought of all those silly people who pay money to go to a gym and sit on stationary exercise bicycles when I can get the same value for free. I have a smile of satisfaction as I reach the top of the hill.

Problems are there to be faced and overcome. We cannot achieve anything with an easy life. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to gain a university degree. Her activism and writing proved inspirational. She wrote,The character cannot be developed with ease. Only through experiences of suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.”

One of the main determinants of success in life is our attitude towards adversity. From time to time we all face hardships, problems, accidents and difficulties. Some are of our making but many are no fault of our own. While we cannot choose adversity, we can choose our attitude towards it.

Douglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he had both legs cut off following a flying accident. He was determined to fly again and went on to become one of the leading flying aviators in the Battle of Britain with 22 aerial victories over the Germans. He was an inspiration to others during the war. He said,Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t do this or that. That’s nonsense. Make up your mind, and you’ll never use crutches or a stick, and then have a go at everything. Go to school, and join in all the games you can. Go anywhere you want to. But never, never let them persuade you that     things are too difficult or impossible.”

The biographies of great people are full of examples of how they took steps to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common thread is that they did not become depressed. They chose their attitude. They chose to be positive. They took on the challenge. They won. Nevertheless, there is still the problem of how you change your attitude towards adversity.

    8. Which of the following is true according to the author of the passage?

    A. Those who want to achieve success can’t expect to live an easy life.

    B. Climbing hills on bicycles is the best way to take exercise.

    C. Going to a gym is greatly beneficial to people’s health.

    D. People’s attitude to hardships is the only factor of their success.

    9. By quoting what Douglas Bader said, the author intends to tell us “__________”.

    A. Failure is the mother of success

    B. A bad workman quarrels with his tools

    C. Nothing is difficult to the man who will try

    D. If you risk nothing, you will have nothing

    10. Which of the following can best function as the title of the passage?

    A. Different attitudes towards misfortune

    B. Face difficulties with a smile

    C. Nothing is impossible

    D. Life is full of adversity

11.Following this passage, the author will further talk about ________.

    A. how his friend helped him to change his attitude towards  the adversity he faced
    B. what steps to take to change your attitude towards the  adversity you face
    C. what great people have in common
    D. why it is important to keep optimistic in face of adversity

    D

Terrafugia Inc. said Monday that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying car within the next year. The vehicle—named the Transition—has two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car. The Transition, which flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach around 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air. It flies using a 23-gallon tank of gas and burns 5 gallons per hour in the air. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon.

Around 100 people have already put down a $10,000 deposit to get a Transition when they go on sale, and those numbers will likely rise after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public later this week at the New York Auto Show. But don’t expect it to show up in too many driveways. It’s expected to cost $279,000. And it won’t help if you’re stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway.

Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s, according to Robert Mann, an airline industry expert. But Mann thinks Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the flying car a reality. The government has already permitted the company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle to fly. The Transition is now going through crash tests to make sure it meets federal safety standards.

Mann said Terrafugia was helped by the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision five years ago to create a separate set of standards for light sport aircraft, which are lower than those for pilots of larger planes. Terrafugia says an owner would need to pass a test and complete 20 hours of flying time to be able to fly the Transition, a requirement pilots would find relatively easy to meet.

    12. What is the first paragraph mainly about?

    A. The basic data of the Transition.

    B. The advantages of flying cars.

    C. The potential market for flying cars.

    D. The designers of the Transition.

    13. Why is the Transition unlikely to show up in too many driveways?

    A. It causes traffic jams.

    B. It is very expensive.

    C. It is difficult to operate.

    D. It burns too much fuel.

    14. What is the government’s attitude to the development of the flying car?

    A. Cautious.              B. Ambiguous.

    C. Favorable.            D. Disapproving.

    15. What is the best title for the text?

    A. Flying Car at Auto Show

    B. The Transition’s First Flight

    C. Pilots’ Dream Coming True

    D. Flying Car Closer to Reality
