1a Where d yu prefer t find infrmatin abut space explratin? Chse the nes that are true fr yu.
A. Ppular science magazines. B. Science fictin bks. C. Online news.
1b Read the title and the text quickly. Where wuld yu find an article like this?
Reaching Fr the StarsSince the beginning f human histry, peple have lked up at the stars and wndered what they were like. Many ancient cultures believed that these pints f light were frm gds r ther mysterius wrlds. Hwever, as technlgy and science develped, we learnt the truth abut stars. They are real places like ur wn sun, and they are farther away than anyne imagined. This raises the questin: Can we visit the stars ne day?
Paragraph 1
The man-made bject which has travelled farthest frm Earth is Vyager 1. This spacecraft was launched in 1977. In case Vyager 1 is fund by alien life, a special recrd with sunds and pictures frm Earth is carried n bard. It shws wh we are and where we are frm. By 2025, Vyager 1 was ver 25 billin kilmetres frm Earth, but that is still a lng way frm Earth’s secnd-clsest star, Prxima Centauri. That star is 4.2 light years away—abut 40 trillin kilmetres!
Paragraph 2
The challenge f visiting the stars gets even bigger fr space flights with humans. The farthest that any human has travelled in space is nly abut 400,000 kilmetres, t the far side f the mn. Time is a big prblem. At present, even a jurney t the planet Mars will take arund six t nine mnths. What will the astrnauts eat and drink during this perid? And hw abut their health and safety? These prblems grw when we talk abut visiting anther star. It might take hundreds f thusands f years t get there!
Paragraph 3
Scientists, hwever, believe that visiting the stars is nt a cmpletely wild dream. One idea is t have the astrnauts sleep during their jurney, like sme animals d in winter. Anther is t develp much faster spacecraft. While this is nt pssible right nw, with natins and scientists cperating with ne anther, there is hpe that the necessary technlgy will be develped. Humans have phtgraphed ther galaxies, set ft n the mn, and even successfully landed rvers n Mars. It seems likely that ne day we will reach the stars.
Paragraph 4
1c Read again and match each paragraph with its main idea.
Paragraph 1 Paragraph 2 Paragraph 3 Paragraph 4
A. Lng distance space travel is difficult fr humans.B. Humans have lng been curius abut the stars.C. In the future, it may be pssible t visit a star.D. N spacecraft has travelled clse t a star.
1d Cmplete the mind map with the infrmatin frm the text. Yu can use yur wn wrds.
Can we visit the stars ne day?

1e Discuss the questins. Find mre infrmatin t supprt yur answers.

space statin
2b Cmplete the cnversatin with the phrases in the bx.
Ann: Are yu ging t watch the ____________ tmrrw mrning?Bb: Yes. I’m ging there early ____________ there are t many peple.Ann: Yeah, it will be very crwded. I think I’ll watch it nline instead.Bb: I’d prefer t see it with my wn eyes. I want t be an astrnaut in the future.Ann: Cl! The jb must require yu t be strng bth in mind and bdy.Bb: Yes. I think it’s fantastic t live and wrk ____________.Ann: But it must be difficult t ____________ if yu need t be tied dwn!Bb: Nt a prblem fr me. I believe that space travel will be made much easier ______.Ann: Well, I’ve nly been ____________ a plane twice, and I was scared. I prefer t have a jb that keeps my feet n the grund.

fall asleep
2c Cmplete the passage with the crrect frms f the wrds in the bx.
Fr thusands f years, human beings dreamt f visiting the mn and ther planets. Thugh many missins failed r had t be __________, space explratin never stpped. In 1969, humans finally __________ the mn’s surface. Since then, mre missins t the mn have been __________. It is hped that mn bases will be built in the near future s that scientists can __________ and d mre research there. In time, it seems pssible that the wildest dream f visiting ther planets will als cme true.
3a Read abut ne teenager’s space dream. Then cmplete the chart.
My Space DreamMy space dream is that ne day a research statin will be built n the mn. I believe there are quite a few benefits.First, it will be a gd place fr scientists t cperate and d space research tgether. New technlgies can be develped, tested, and perated there. These technlgies can then be used t help build statins n Mars and ther planets.Secnd, mre resurces will be fund. I think the mn may have sme special kind f energy resurce that can be useful t Earth. It will just take time fr scientists t find it.
Third, peple may live and wrk there. Turists will als be able t visit. I want t be ne f the first visitrs. I hpe that ne day we humans can spend hlidays in space and explre the universe.Humans have achieved many things that were nce nly dreams. I hpe the research statin n the mn will be built in the near future, and I hpe it will happen during my lifetime.
A space statin will be built n the mn.

Peple may live and wrk there. Turists will als be able t visit it.
3b Discuss the ideas abut space. Which interests yu the mst and why?
build a research statin n the mnsend a spacecraft t the nearest star systemsearch fr life in the slar systembuild a satellite t cllect the sun’s energy and send it t Earth……
