Imagine it's Saturday mrning.Yu're relaxing when yur best friend texts, "Culd yu help me mve tday?" Yu sigh — there g yur weekend plans — but reply, "Of curse." A week later,a cwrker yu barely knw asks fr a hand. This time,yu hesitate.Psychlgists call this tendency "scial discunting":ur genersity declines as scial distance increases.
But what happens in the brain during these decisins?A small regin called the baslateral amygdala (BLA) plays a key rle.It helps us balance self-interest with scial intentins by assigning value t bth ur wn well-being and that f thers.
T test this, researchers studied individuals in Suth Africa with Urbach-Wiethe disease,a rare genetic cnditin that damages the BLA.They cmpared five wmen with this disease t 16 healthy participants in a scial discunting task. Each persn listed eight peple, ranging frm their clsest friend t a cmplete stranger, and decided hw much mney t share with each.
As expected, all participants gave mre t clse cntacts.Interestingly, thse with BLA damage were less generus verall, and their genersity decreased mre sharply as scial distance increased. These differences culd nt be explained by persnality r empathy levels.
The findings suggest the BLA helps peple create a "mdel" f the scial wrld t guide decisin-making.An unharmed BLA allws us t cnsider scial cntext and rules when deciding whether t be generus.Withut it,individuals may rely n a "standard" strategy, unless the receiver is emtinally very clse,in which case helping remains autmatic.
Genersity is therefre nt an all-r-nthing trait;it is a mdel-based scial behavir, shaped by hw clse we feel t the receiver f help. And deep in the brain, the baslateral amygdala is helping us d that calculatin.

      D. The persnality's influence n scial discunting.

      C. BLA allws individuals t weigh scial infrmatin.
      D. Persnality can ptentially affect BLA-harmed peple.
