Last year, ur schl started a new prgram called “Green Thumb Club”. It was created fr students wh are interested in gardening and envirnmental prtectin. Twenty students frm grades 7 t 9 jined the club. We met every Tuesday and Thursday afternn in the small garden behind the schl library. Our gal was simple: t turn an empty piece f land int a beautiful and prductive garden.
Our first task was t clean up the area. There were many stnes, ld bricks, and plastic waste. We wrked tgether t remve all the rubbish. Then, we tested the sil. The science teacher, Mrs. Chen, helped us. She explained that gd sil needs the right balance f sand, dirt, and rganic matter. Our sil was t hard and had t much clay, s we added cmpst (堆肥) made frm leftver fd frm the schl cafeteria. This made the sil sfter and mre nutritius.
After preparing the sil, we chse what t plant. We decided t grw bth flwers and vegetables. The flwers wuld attract bees and butterflies, which help plants reprduce. The vegetables wuld prvide fresh, healthy fd fr ur schl kitchen. We planted sunflwers, mariglds, tmates, carrts, and lettuce. We als built a small fence arund the garden t keep rabbits and ther animals frm eating ur plants.
During the fllwing mnths, we tk turns watering the plants, pulling ut weeds, and watching fr pests (害虫). We learned that sme insects are harmful t plants, but many thers are helpful. Instead f using chemical pesticides, we used natural methds t cntrl pests. Fr example, we planted garlic next t ur rses because garlic keeps away sme insects. We als put up a small birdhuse, and the birds that came ate many f the harmful bugs.
At the end f the schl year, we held a small harvest festival. We picked the ripe vegetables and made a large salad fr the whle schl. Everyne said it was the freshest salad they had ever tasted. The flwers were in full blm, and the garden was clrful and full f life. Our headmaster praised us and said that ur garden had becme an example fr ther classes. The best part, hwever, was the sense f pride we all felt. We had turned an empty piece f land int smething alive and beautiful. We learned that with patience, teamwrk, and care, we can make the wrld a little bit better.
