The village sits n twering steep cliffs, cnnected t the utside wrld nly by narrw steel ladders. Wrse still, the pr netwrk nce cmpletely cut the village ff frm the utside, which made regular nline classes impssible fr lcal kids. Many f them had t withdraw frm schl at an early age, and this sad sight deeply tuched Yang Mei when she set ft in the lnely muntain village.
At first, Yang Mei met with a series f severe hardships. The rustic village huses were cld and damp, and climbing the dangerus steel ladders became her exhausting daily challenge. The faint netwrk signal ften interrupted her teaching suddenly. Sme cnservative villagers even dubted if she culd stick t the wrk fr lng and refused t send their children t her simple classrm.
Hwever, Yang Mei never lst heart r thught f quitting. She tried her best t fix basic netwrk equipment with lcal villagers’ help, carried teaching supplies up the steep ladders little by little, and visited every family t cmmunicate with parents patiently. She set up a simple “clud classrm” and ffered lively daily nline lessns including Chinese, Maths and elementary English.
Gradually, the nce shy and silent kids grew mre eager fr knwledge, actively raising questins in class and sharing their tiny inner wishes. Warm laughter filled the small classrm as mre children jined in. Yang Mei said she wuld keep staying here t light up the kids’ learning path. Her devted effrts turned the simple clud classrm int a bright windw fr the children t knw the wider wrld and chase their precius yuthful dreams.

Have yu ever rushed t a rller caster in an amusement park, queued fr 30 minutes in the burning heat, but enjyed the ride fr nly ne minute? When recalling the experience years later, what remains vivid in yur mind is the tensin at the highest pint, the thrilling weightlessness while diving dwn, and the strng sense f excitement when it finished. The lng and tiring wait, hwever, has faded frm yur memry cmpletely.
This is explained by the Peak-End Rule, develped by Daniel Kahneman, a Nbel Prize-winning ecnmist. The rule indicates that ur verall impressin f an experience is determined nt by its ttal length r rdinary mments, but by hw we feel at its mst intense peak and final mment, which makes ur brain a biased (有偏见的) editr rather than a faithful camera.
T cnfirm this rule, Kahneman designed a nise experiment. Participants were expsed t tw painful perids. The first was a 30-secnd lud, sharp nise. The secnd included the same 30-secnd unpleasant nise fllwed by 10 secnds f sfter nise, making it last lnger and cntain mre discmfrt in ttal. Surprisingly, mst participants preferred t experience the secnd ne again, as its relatively gentle ending entirely transfrmed their memry f the suffering.
The rule deeply affects family life and educatin. Many students grw tired f studying mainly because they ften face negative peaks such as parents’ scld when they struggle with difficult prblems, and disappinting endings like extra hmewrk immediately after they finish their given tasks. By cntrast, games are carefully designed t ffer frequent exciting peaks and satisfying endings, which explains their strng attractin.
The rule als applies t interpersnal relatinships and business. A single quarrel befre bed can ruin a whle day’s pleasant memry, while IKEA and Starbucks win custmers by creating impressive peaks and warm endings. Actually, what decides ur happiness is nt every secnd we experience, but thse key mments that shape ur lifelng memries.
28. What can be learned abut the Peak-End Rule frm the first tw paragraphs?
A. It was discvered by a grup f psychlgists.
B. It explains peple’s selective memry f experiences.
C. It fcuses n average feelings during an experience.
D. It prves the brain recrds memries exactly like a camera.
29. Why did mst participants chse the secnd nise experience?
A. It brught them mre discmfrt in ttal.
B. It lasted lnger than the first ne.
C. It ended with a cmparatively mild sund.
D. It had n sharp and lud nise at all.
30. Which f the fllwing cases applies the Peak-End Rule?
A. Giving custmers a warm gdbye.
B. Keeping daily study tasks all the same.
C. Perfecting every dish in a restaurant.
D. Making custmer service calls lnger.
31. What is the best title fr the text?
A. An Experiment n Human Memry
B. Key Factrs in Imprving Students’ Interest
C. Secrets Behind Business Success
D. Key Mments Defining Our Mmries
D
“Buy land; they’re nt making it anymre,” Mark Twain nce said. Tday, this remark serves as a sharp warning abut ur mdern fd system. Earth pssesses a limited amunt f arable (适合耕种的 ) land, abut ne third f it already degraded. With the glbal ppulatin prjected t reach 10 billin by 2050, the urgent need t increase prductin has brught fd security firmly int the sptlight.
Glbal fd prductin is als wrryingly centralized in merely six cuntries — Canada, the U. S., Brazil, Argentina, Russia, and Ukraine. These natins accunt fr an verly large share f internatinally traded basic crps, particularly grains and ilseeds that supprt much f the wrld’s calrie intake. Alzbeta Klein f the Internatinal Fertilizer Assciatin warns that any cnflict breaking ut in these six natins will unavidably lead t widespread hunger.
While agriculture has always been cyclical, gverned by predictable seasnal patterns, climate change
intrduces a new layer f uncertainty, as extreme weather can destry majr percentages f harvests at any given time with little prir warning.
That strain is nt limited t land. As peple flck t cities, farming is becming a rare jb. In the U. S., nly 1.5 percent f the ppulatin nw wrks directly in agriculture, a sharp drp frm 50 percent sixty years ag. Hwever, these pressures nly reveal half the picture. A shrinking wrkfrce has unexpectedly accelerated extrardinary efficiency gains thrugh decades f innvatin and mechanizatin.
The majr task will be prducing mre with less, and few places represent that reality mre vividly than Brazil, which has successfully transfrmed frm a fd imprter in the 1970s t a wrld-leading exprter in 2026. Over 50 years, it increased planted area by 140 percent but raised prductin and prductivity by an amazing 580 percent. Meanwhile, as water grws scarce and pesticide regulatins tighten in sme regins, cuntries like China and Saudi Arabia are investing in prtected crps, glasshuses, and greenhuses t secure supply.
32. What makes fd security an urgent issue accrding t Paragraph 1?
A. Wise remarks frm Mark Twain.
B. Large areas f cmpletely degraded land.
C. Limited arable land and grwing ppulatin.
D. Pr management f mdern fd system.
33. What des the authr want t shw by mentining the six cuntries?
A. Glbal fd supply is highly cncentrated.
B. Cnflicts ften break ut in these cuntries.
C. They prvide enugh calries fr the wrld.
D. They wn the mst advanced farming technlgy.
34. What des the underlined wrd “strain” in Paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Prgress. B. Injury. C. Lss. D. Pressure.
35. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A. Brazil fails t balance its fd imprt and exprt.
B. Cuntries are seeking ways t raise fd prductin.
C. Grwing ppulatin is the key prblem in agriculture.
D. Greenhuses are widely used in all water-scarce areas.

Anther influential thery invlves light cmpetitin fr survival. Trees rely n sunlight fr phtsynthesis, the key prcess fr making fd. 38 . Hwever, this thery alne can’t fully explain why the gaps are s precise and cnsistent. Sme researchers, like eclgist Miguel Franc, suggest it might be a cmbinatin f factrs: abrasin (磨 损 ) creates the initial gap, and then the trees’ light-sensitive abilities guide further grwth away frm the shade.
This behavir is mre than just a curisity. 39 . Mre imprtantly, it allws mre sunlight t filter thrugh t the frest flr, supprting a richer undergrwth ecsystem. Crwn shyness is a remarkable example f hw cmpetitin and cexistence shape the natural wrld. 40 .

My family recently tk a trip t Flrida t visit Walt Disney Wrld, where we enjyed theme parks, water parks, resrts (旅游胜地), dining, and shpping. We stayed at a lvely beachfrnt htel. One night, I lked ut f the windw and nticed smething strange. Rather than being white r yellw, all the lights alng the beachfrnt were red. I asked the man at the frnt desk abut the unusual lighting, and he explained it was used t help prtect the area’s turtle ppulatin. My dad and I did sme research and discvered that light pllutin is a serius issue fr the wrld’s sea turtles. When they leave their eggs, baby turtles head tward the brightest light they can see. Under natural cnditins, this wuld be the light f the mn and stars n the water. Hwever, bright electric lights ften cnfuse them, guiding them away frm the sea and tward busy rads and hungry, turtle-eating creatures. Female turtles may als be discuraged frm laying their eggs n bright beaches. Scientists discvered that turtles are unable t see red and range lights well, making them less likely t affect turtles’ behavir. Nw, “turtle-safe” lights are used in mst castal cmmunities in the Gulf f Mexic. I think it is really cl!
