Intending t find ut whether elephants might be using made-up names, t, Michael Pard, a behaviral eclgist at Clrad State University, and his clleagues first identified 469 calls r “rumbles” made by wild African elephants living in Ambseli Natinal Park and Samburu and Buffal Springs Natinal Reserves in Kenya. Each f the vcalizatins (发声) had a knwn caller and a knwn receiver, and an algrithm (算法) was used t predict which f these sunds were ptential names and which elephant they were likely t describe.
Next, the researchers played recrdings f these “names” t different elephants and fund that elephants respnded mre enthusiastically t their wn name than they did t the names f thers. When they heard their names, they apprached the speaker mre quickly and respnded mre vcally. The findings suggest that elephants have specific vcalizatins r names fr each ther, and that they can recgnize these names, even when they ccur ut f cntext.
Name-calling was mre cmmn when animals were cmmunicating ver lng distances, the authrs fund, and als when adults were talking t their babies. The yung were less likely than adults t use names, suggesting that the ability t design and use names is a skill that takes years t learn.
