BA letter written t a 12yearld girl in Lithuania arrived in December, almst 51 years after it was sent. Nw in her 60s, Genvefa Klnvska said after being handed the letter, “I thught that smene was playing a jke n me.”The letter included a handmade, clred rse and tw paper dlls. It was sent t Klnvska by Ewa, a yung girl in Pland. They exchanged letters in a penfriend prgram where peple write letters t each ther withut actually meeting.
The letter, tgether with 17 thers, was discvered last summer when a wall was taken dwn in an ld pst ffice in Vilnius. Jurgis Vilutis is the wner f the building. “The wrkers suggested I thrw the ld letters away, but I called the pst ffice instead,” Vilutis said. “I'm s happy they gt interested.”
The letters, frm the late 1960s and early 1970s, were prbably hidden by a pstal wrker after he searched them fr mney r valuables, Vilutis said. Lithuania was part f the Sviet Unin then. The senders were family members r penfriends frm places such as Austria, Pland, r Russia. Street names and their pst cdes(邮编) have changed in Vilnius.
Pst ffice wrkers spent mnths lking fr the peple wh were suppsed t get the letters — the recipients. Only five recipients were fund. They survived n the ice fr five mnths. Then, n 16th April, 1915, Shackletn saw land. It was Elephant Island. He and five men wuld take ne f the lifebats and sail 800 miles t Suth Gergia, where there was a camp.
