The s-called “AI takever” has sught t d things humans can’t r d them better, but its intrductin int sprt has been cntrversial. S what’s ging badly with AI in sprt, and why is it time t give it up?
Our attitude tward high- tech devices is the key t the prblem. We dn’t just expect them t be gd — we demand they be perfect. We tend t think a tech-driven wrld can remve human mistakes. As technlgy advances rapidly, faultless perfrmance has becme the nrm, leading many t believe human invlvement is unnecessary. Yet the all-pwerful machines dn’t seem s perfect when they get things wrng.
A clear example is the AI-based ffside- check (越位检查) system. In the 2025 FA Cup16th- rund Burnemuth-Wlves match, it went wrng in the crwded gal area, frcing VAR fficials t turn t manual line- drawing, which resulted in an 8-minute review. It ruined game flw — failing t live up t the perfect accuracy prmise f high- tech tls.
Sme may ask: Why nt just wait fr AI t get better? The answer is n. AI desn’t have the ability t becme mre accurate, even if faster and mre efficient. Mst sprts rules have many unclear parts and rm fr human interpretatin, s AI can never be truly better than humans at making calls (作出判罚) .
What abut sprts, where calls are mre abut facts than pinins? Sme big tennis games have gt rid f all human line judges, hping AI can tell exactly where a ball lands. But human errrs still happen: at this year’s Wimbledn, the equipment was accidentally turned ff during a game, leading t three wrng calls.
Humans have t be invlved ne way r anther. They either perate the equipment, r make the calls themselves. Bth ways have human mistakes, but sprts fans frgive human referees’ mistakes, nt AI’s. Jhn Eric Gff, a sprts scientist wh specializes in sprts refereeing systems, states that “Human errrs are part f the fun f sprts.” S we shuld start accepting human errr, and that means stpping AI frm taking ver sprts.
      8. What des the underlined wrd “cntrversial” mean in the first paragraph?
      A. Debatable.B. Acceptable.C. Welcme.D. Supprting.
      9. What des the authr want t shw with the example in paragraph 3?
      A. High-tech tls might replace human referees.
      B. VAR fficials cntribute t the flw f games.
      C. AI in sprt falls shrt f peple’s expectatins.
      D. Human referees make fewer mistakes than AI.
      10. In which aspect are humans better than AI in sprt?
      A. Understanding unclear rules.B. Ding a ffside-check.
      C. Aviding technical mistakes.D. Wrking as a line judge.
      11. What is the authr’s attitude twards the use f AI in sprt?
      A. Favrable.B. Dismissive.C. Nn-supprtive.D. Unclear.
      【答案】8. A 9. C 10. A 11. C

      15. Hw des Juan Luis Rsend feel abut future f the rbts?
      A. Cnfident.B. Prfitable.C. Cncerned.D. Dubtful.
      【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. A
