S why is the study imprtant? Because when we understand vlcanes, we can predict hw they will behave and help prtect the peple wh live near them frm pssible harm. When we think f vlcanes erupting, we think f rcks but perhaps the biggest danger is frm ash. There have been sme very famus vlcan eruptins. Krakata, in Indnesia, erupted in 1883, killing ver 36,000 peple. Santrini, in Greece, was ruined by an explsin abut 3,600 years ag. But the mst famus eruptin was Vesuvius in Italy in 79 AD. Ash frm the explsin buried the Rman twns f Pmpeii and Herculaneum, preserving them s well that we can nw visit them tday.
