First, it’s gd fr a child’s brain. Learning a secnd language imprves their academic achievements. Many
studies have shwn that children wh learn a freign language get better grades at schl. Bilingual children als
display a better facility in their native language. Their grammar, vcabulary and spelling skills are strnger than
thse f single-language speakers. Children wh learn a secnd language becme expert prblem-slvers and
creative thinkers. That’s because their brains are cnstantly wrking t srt ut which language t speak and when.
Studies further shw that bilingual teens are better at multitasking.
Multilingual parents understand the benefits f learning mre than ne language. Ben Mazr f Mntreal
speaks English, French and Hebrew. He says, “Kids’ brains are like a spnge (海绵). They absrb everything. It
cmes t them s easily while they’re yung. S why nt give them the chance t learn anther language?”
A number f studies shw that bilingualism is valuable t the brain later in life. Scttish researchers did a

Bat habitats (栖息地) are damaged by human activities despite their cntributin t ur envirnment. T
ensure that we can study and imprve the health f ur bat ppulatin, we need t lcate their habitats. But finding
their habitats seems like a tall rder. They are small and fast and primarily fly at night.
Our new research cmbines ur previus mathematical mdel f bat mvement with data gathered frm sund
recrders knwn as “bat detectrs”. They are placed arund the envirnment and left there fr several nights.
Bats are able t “see with sund” when they’re flying. If the sunds are made within 10 t 15 meters f a bat
detectr, the device is started t make a recrding, prviding a prper recrd f where and when a bat is present.
The sund recrdings als prvide infrmatin abut the species f bat. Greater hrseshe bats make a very unique
call at exactly 82 kHz, s we can easily tell whether the species is present r nt.
Our mdel can als be used t predict the frequency (预测频率) f bat calls based n a given habitat lcatin.
S, we divided the envirnment int grids (网格). The squares whse recrders best cllect the bat data will then be
the mst likely lcatins f the habitats. This simple methd can be applied t whle landfrms.
Cutting ut the regins that are least likely t have the habitats can mean we reduce the search space t less
than 1% f the firstly surveyed area, simplifying the prcess f finding bat habitats frees researchers t fcus n
safeguarding these areas, rather than struggling t find them.
In 2022, we develped an app that uses publicly surced data t predict bat flight lines. At the mment, the
app can help researchers, develpers r lcal authrity planners knw hw the envirnment is used by bats.
Hwever, it needs the habitat lcatin t be prvided first, and this infrmatin is nt always knwn. Our new
research remves this difficulty, making the app easier t use.
12. What des the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 imply abut lcating a bat habitat?
A. It attracts a lt f interest. B. It is an extremely difficult task.
C. It has shwn impressive prgress. D. It ften leads t unexpected discveries.
13. Why is the greater hrseshe bat mentined in the text?
A. T prve the exactness f sund recgnitin. B. T intrduce the species’ survival skills.
第 5页/共 10页
C. T explain bats’ mvement in darkness. D. T discuss bats’ habitat preferences.
14. What effect des the grid-based methd in the new mdel primarily achieve?
A. It helps cunt bats in different areas. B. It cntrls the sund frequency f bat calls.
C. It reduces the influence f human activities. D. It enables prper judgment f pssible habitats.
15. What limitatin f the 2022 app des the new research deal with?
A. Inability t tell apart bat species.
B. Difficulty in guiding bats’ flight.
C. Dependence n pre-knwn habitat details.
D. Unsuitability fr certain envirnmental cnditins.
