A ppular stry claims that the Italian adventurer Marc Pl was respnsible fr intrducing pastas(意大利面食) t China. This legend appeals t Italians, but if yu ask Jen Lin-Liu, she is unlikely t agree.
In her latest bk, On the Ndle Rad, Lin-Liu recrds a six-mnth jurney alng the histric Silk Rad frm eastern China, thrugh central Asia, and eventually arriving in Eurpe, in search f the true rigin f pastas.
As Lin-Liu tells NPR’s Linda Wertheimer, the stry f pastas traveling frm West t East was first ppularized in 1929 by Macarni Jurnal, the fficial trade jurnal f American pasta-makers. But this culdn’t pssibly be crrect.
Lin-Liu tells Linda that China has had a lnger traditin f pastas. In the nrthwestern prvinces, she finds wmen making different pastas that were typical t the regin lng befre Marc Pl arrived in China.
“Sme seem like shells and sme lk like pstage stamps,” Lin-Liu recalls in the interview. “Biled in water, they are served up in spicy lamb r beef sup with bits f green peppers r nins. They’re delicius.”
As she heads further west, she finds that the pastas f China give way t the piergies f Eastern Eurpe, and finally, the pastas f Italy.
“Alng the way, I cme acrss all kinds f pastas,” says Lin-Liu. “Sme peple therized that Ghengis Khan was respnsible fr carrying them all the way frm China thrugh Central Asia, where f curse they have mantu, manti and ther similar dugh parcels (面食包裹物) filled with spiced meat r cheese.”
“But wh des pastas best?” Linda asks.
“I dn’t think that there’s a straight answer,” Lin-Liu admits. “At bth ends f the Silk Rad, yu can see imprvements that yu dn’t really see in the central part f the rute.”
But this diversity alng the way is what Lin-Liu believes makes pastas s pleasurable: Nt nly can they be prepared in such different ways, but they can als be tpped r filled with almst anything.
Why did Jen Lin-Liu travel alng the Silk Rad?
T search fr the rigin f pastas.B. T find materials fr her next bk.
      C. T cllect the riginal pasta recipes.D. T fllw in the histric figures’ steps.
What did Jen Lin-Liu find alng the way?
Pastas served in spicy sup taste better.
Cuntries in Central Asia make better pastas.
Mantu and manti are the same t Chinese ndles.
Pastas can be made and cked in different ways.
What can be the best title fr the text?
      Wh Brught Pastas t China?
Which Cuntry Des the Best Pastas?
Is Italy r China the Birthplace f Pastas?
Is Macarni Jurnal Right Abut Pastas’ Origin?
Which f the fllwing is the text mst prbably based n?
      Marc Pl’s jurnals.B. Linda Wertheimer’s interview.
      C. Jen Lin-Liu’s new bk.D. Ghengis Khan’s war recrds.
      C
Sea animals usually like t keep cl, but warming seawater is bringing disasters t them in sme parts f the wrld, a new study suggests.
Scientists first nticed the prblem after a 2011 heat wave in Australia: Unusually warm seawater ff Australia’s western cast that year was fllwed by a significant decrease in dlphin births ver the next six years. By tracking hundreds f dlphins during that time, scientists als fund the warmth had drpped their survival rate by 12 percent.
“The influence f the heat wave surprised us,” said study lead authr Snja Wild in a statement. “It is particularly unusual that the reprductive success f females appears nt t have returned t nrmal levels, even after six years.”
During that 2011 ht spell, temperatures in the area were as much as 7°F abve average, scientists said. The
extreme warmth damaged seagrass, a key cg in the area’s ecsystem that prvides fd and shelter fr sea animals.
Sme gd news frm the study: The heat wave did nt have the same effect n all dlphins. Dlphins that use spnges as tls — a technique that helps dlphins lcate fd in deep water — were nt as affected as thse that dn’t use this technique.
“Still, the declines in dlphin ppulatins are a serius reminder f the negative effects f climate change,” Wild
      said.
In fact, even beynd dlphins, climate change may have mre far-reaching cnsequences fr the survival f many ther sea species than had been previusly thught. “Heat waves are likely t ccur mre frequently in the future due t climate change,” said study c-authr Michael Krützen. “This is wrrying nt nly fr the lng-term impact n sea animals but als fr the entire ceanic ecsystems,” he said.
What happened t the dlphins in Australia after the 2011 heat wave?
They prduced fewer babies fr years.B. Only 12% f dlphin babies survived.
      C. Male dlphins’ survival rate decreased.D. Female dlphins stpped having babies.
Which is clsest in meaning t “cg” in paragraph 4?
      A. Cmpetitr.B. Resurce.C. Chemical.D. Prgram.
What des Michael Krützen mst likely want t stress in the last paragraph?
Nt all dlphins are affected by climate change.
He is wrried abut the lng-term effect n dlphins.
Heat waves will happen mre frequently in the future.
Climate change is harmful t the ecsystem in the cean.
What is the authr’s main purpse in writing this text?
T reprt a disaster near Australia’s western cast.
T tell readers sme gd news frm a recent study.
T intrduce an article written by Snja Wild’s team.
T call fr the prtectin f sea animals in the wrld.
      D
My cffee maker is texting me again. It’s scheduled t make cffee tmrrw, the message says, but I need t put mre water int it. The cffee maker is just ne f many smart things in a future hme. There will be smart smke alarms, smart washing machines and even Bluetth-cnnected tilets. Nest, which makes smart appliances, likes t talk abut turning “unlved prducts” int “simple, beautiful, thughtful things”. And the cmpany’s chief, Tny
Fadell, has predicted that in 10 years, “everything will have data in it”.
That is nt difficult t imagine anymre. Cmputers are cheap and tiny. Wireless Internet is nearly everywhere.
But I think it is silly. Why d I need a cffee machine that texts me? Is that really necessary?
Clearly, it’s nt. Fr years, I’ve used a simple French press. It des nt have sensrs, nr des it cnnect thrugh my wireless netwrk t tell me abut its needs. All my simple French press des is make delicius cffee that’s a bit better than what my Wi-Fi-enabled cffee maker can manage.
And even if it is silly nw, technlgists argue that their ultimate smart-hme visin is a hme that basically runs itself. Fr example, the egg cntainer tells the fridge it’s empty, which puts eggs int the list fr a shpping app, which then delivers thse eggs t yur dr. But such little things that enable a hme t run smthly have t be assigned t a lt f rbts. Hwever, the real wrld is a hard place fr them t perate in. And the cffee maker, fr its part, still requires its wner t take many steps — frm buying materials t cleaning — and nly autmates the final ne, the brewing prcess, which is actually the easiest part.
At this pint, the reasn t use smart appliances is nt that they are better than standard machines at a given jb, but that they make everyne’s favrite device — the smartphne — mre fun.
What des the authr aim t d in paragraph 1?
      T prmte a cmpany.B. T prve Tny Fadell wrng.
      C. T present a future hme.D. T shw ff her smart things.
What des the authr say abut her French press?
She plans t upgrade it.B. It wrks extremely well.
      C. It can perate n its wn.D. She is unsatisfied with it.
What des the authr think f the technlgists’ dream?
It seems t gd t be true yet.B. It is nt ambitius enugh.
      C. It can be turned int reality sn.D. It might cst t much mney.
What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
The advantages f smart appliances.B. The limitatins f standard machines.
      C. A pssible functin f the smartphne.D. An explanatin fr smart appliances’ ppularity.

The extreme warmth damaged seagrass, a key cg in the area’s ecsystem that prvides fd and shelter fr sea animals.

And the cmpany’s chief, Tny Fadell, has predicted that in 10 years, “everything will have data in it”.
