I have always been big. I am cmfrtable with my bdy, but there is a price t pay fr being different.
In primary schl, I was crazy abut gymnastics and became a member in the schl team in the final year. Still, I had t wrk harder fr being a bit heavy. Lng after the ther girls had left, I wuld stay in the schl hall practicing again and again withut the cach arund. Smetimes I fell hard n the flr, but I always std up and kept ging. Even thugh it was really hard t master the ribbn (带子), I carried n and imprved a lt.
Whenever I went up in a cmpetitin, I always felt that the crwd did nt expect much frm an verweight child. They whispered (耳语) t each ther, and ne man even said, “That’s the ugliest letard (紧身衣) I’ve ever seen. She lks like an awkward elephant!”
Hearing their wrds, yu culd understand my feelings. My hands were shaking, and fr a secnd I wanted t run away. But I just kept silent because I decided t let my ribbn d the talking. When the music started, I frgt the audience and fcused nly n every spin and every jump.
I was the winner in the Natinal Champinship that year. But that was nt the best thing I gt frm hurs f tiring practice. The best thing was learning that my bdy cannt decide wh I am. Sciety seems t believe that verweight peple are unhappy with their weight and have lw self-cnfidence. I d nt believe that. I believe I can achieve anything—because I am bigger than my bdy.

A team f scientists at the University f Texas came up with the new way. The tl they created has tw main parts. The first is a scanner that allws the scientists t recrd brain activity. The secnd is an AI system that the scientists trained t turn infrmatin frm brain activity int wrds.
T recrd brain activity withut surgery (手术), the scientists used a big machine called an fMRI machine. The fMRI machine uses strng magnetic fields (磁场) and radi waves t create pictures shwing which parts f the brain are active. The fMRI machine can recrd the activity f the brain as it happens.
Scientists tested the AI system n three human vlunteers. Each persn spent sixteen hurs in an fMRI machine listening t stries. The vlunteers imagined the stries as they heard them, and the fMRI machine recrded their brain activity. Then the AI learned t cnnect vlunteers’ brain activity with the wrds they heard. This helped the scientists understand what the vlunteers were thinking.
The scientists als tested their new system when the vlunteers imagined their wn stries. The AI culd still guess sme wrds crrectly, thugh nt as well as befre. Finally, the scientists shwed the vlunteers silent mvies, with n spken wrds at all. The system culd understand the basic ideas f the mvies.
The scientists say that this is the first AI prgram t turn what peple are thinking int wrds withut brain surgery. The system isn’t smething that can be easily used tday, mainly because f the size and cst f fMRI machines. Hwever, this prgress brings hpe fr future imprvements in helpful technlgy.

Fr a lng time, many peple have thught humans are basically selfish. We seem cruel (残忍的), ften wanting t cmpete fr resurces like fd r water, and t get mre pwer r things. Even when we are kind t thers, sme say we have hidden reasns. And when we act nicely, it’s nly because we have cntrlled (控制) ur natural selfishness and cldness.
This idea abut human nature is cnnected t the science writer Richard Dawkins. His bk The Selfish Gene in 1976 became ppular because it agreed s well with a cmmn spirit in late 20th-century scieties. The spirit was “cmpete first, think f yurself”. Dawkins uses evlutinary psychlgy (进化心理学), a study f hw human behavir develps, t supprt his views, just like many thers.
Peple usually see prehistric times (史前) as a time f cruel cmpetitin. They think life was s hard that nly selfish, angry, and cruel peple culd stay alive. This sunds all right, but it’s based n a wrng thught that prehistric life was a deadly fight t stay alive.
It’s imprtant t remember that in the prehistric times, the wrld had very few peple. Arund 15,000 years ag, the whle wrld had less than 500,000 peple. Back then, humans were hunter-gatherers; they hunted animals and picked wild plants fr fd. With s few peple, these grups didn’t need t cmpete fr resurces, be cruel, r even fight wars.
A lt f examples frm mdern-day hunter-gatherer grups can supprt this idea. These grups live in the same way as prehistric humans did. As Bruce Knauft, an anthrplgist (人类学家), has said, “Hunter-gatherers are knwn fr extreme equality (平等) in pwer. Peple in these grups dn’t cllect r keep a lt f things fr themselves. Instead, they share everything with each ther.”
Take the Kung peple f suthern Africa as an example. Befre they g hunting, they exchange arrws (箭) with each ther. When they kill an animal, the meat ges t the arrw’s wner, nt the ne wh sht it. If smene always tells thers what t d in an angry way, the grup will kick them ut.
All these facts shw that humans might nt be as selfish as many peple think. Our prehistric rts and the lives f mdern hunter-gatherers tell us that sharing, equality, and kindness culd be just as much a part f human nature as anything else.
27.Why did Richard Dawkins’ bkThe Selfish Gene becme ppular?
A. It matched the cmpetitive spirit in scieties.
B. It talked abut prehistric hunter-gatherers.
C. It described the life f the Kung peple.
D. It explained hw t be kind t thers.
28.What can we learn abut the hunter-gather grups?
A. Men always decide what wrk wmen shuld d.
B. Mdern grups are kinder than prehistric grups.
C. They had t fight wars fr a living in prehistric times.
D. Kung peple think it imprtant t share and t be fair.
29.Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the passage?
A. Are Humans Brn t Be Selfish?
B. D We Really Knw Wh We Are?
C. The Selfish Gene in Human Beings
D. Hunter-gather Grups: the Kindest r the Cruelest?
