As a library vlunteer in my senir year, I bserved hw students used the space t cnnect thrugh crafts, games and cnversatins. Our librarians encuraged cnnectin by hsting bk clubs and versized bard games. A 2023 natinal survey fund that nly 55% f students felt clse t peple at their schl, dwn frm 62% in 2021, s effrts like these feel especially imprtant nw. A survey f nearly 5,500 plant cmmunities acrss 119 regins has uncvered that in landscapes with heavy human pressure, typical habitats cntain barely ne-fifth f the species they culd supprt. The internatinal DarkDivNet team — whse members include the Bidiversity and Evlutin Research Grup at the University f the Basque Cuntry (UPV/EHU) — reached this cnclusin by analyzing “dark diversity”, the pl f plant species that shuld live in a site but are absent.
Unlike cnventinal field studies that nly cunt the species currently present in an area, the DarkDivNet team, fr every ne-hectare plt, used climate, sil, and reginal species pls t predict the full rster (花名册) f plants likely t live there under natural cnditins. They cmpared this “ptential cmmunity” with the species that actually grew n the grund.
Since the DarkDivNet prject was launched in 2018, research teams n every cntinent have fllwed a single prtcl(协议) t ensure results are cmparable. T rate human pressure, the scientists turned t the Human Ftprint Index, a measure that integrates ppulatin density (密度), land-use change, and infrastructure like rads. Scres ranged frm undisturbed wilderness t farmed r urbanized land.
The results? Sites in lw-ftprint regins hld abut ne-third f their ptential species and where the ftprint was high, identified diversity declined t 20%. Mdelling shwed that rads, pllutin, and land-use change depress diversity hundreds f kilmeters away, even inside prtected areas.
Accrding t the authrs, the results are alarming because they shw that human disturbance results in a much greater impact than initially thught, even reaching prtected areas far frm the surce f human impact. “Frtunately, the negative influence f human activity was less prnunced when at least ne third f a regin’s area remained well preserved, which supprts the glbal gal f prtecting 30% f the surface f the planet,” the authrs wrte.
By dcumenting bth visible and invisible lsses, dark-diversity analysis reveals the full field f human influence — and highlights hw much f the living wrld can return if true refuges (庇护处) are safeguarded acrss at least 30% f every regin.
8. What can be learned abut the DarkDivNet team’s study apprach?
A. It just depends n histrical data.
B. It avids cunting the present species.
C. It centers n ptential and actual species.
D. It ignres existing reginal plants.
9. What des the study imply abut prtected areas?
A. Their resistance t threats imprves.
B. Distant human activities still harm them.
C. Their bidiversity remains unaffected.
D. Human disturbances seldm anny them.
10. What cnservatin strategy des the study supprt?
A. Banning the urban expansin.
B. Reducing rad cnstructin.
C. Cntrlling the glbal pllutin.
D. Prtecting 30% f the planet’s surface.
11. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Human Impacts n Plant Diversity
B New Tls fr Species Cunting
C. Climate’s Rle in Plant Survival
D. Challenges in Cnservatin Effrts

“Cmputer sftware t identify AI-generated text exists, but mst prgrams share ne weakness: n sense f style,” says Jun Jang, a 16-year-ld junir at Oxfrd High Schl in Mississippi. His new sftware hpes t fill that gap.

Currently, mst AI detectrs lk at ne text by itself, and search fr certain AI traits (特征) but dn’t accunt fr smene’s unique style f writing. Jun’s prgram instead analyzes a text knwn t have been written by a student withut AI help. Hw? Schls already use brwser-lckdwn prgrams that blck access t AI writing tls. A teacher culd cllect writing samples at the beginning f the schl year when students are in this lckdwn mde and “cannt cheat”. After that, the teacher can emply his new prgram t cmpare future wrk by the student with thse early samples.
Jun’s sftware then reviews the text frm a knwn authr fr hw that persn used such things as punctuatin and grammar. Did the writer regularly use lng, cmplex sentences, simple nes r a mix f bth? His sftware searches fr such persnal styles in smene’s writing. Then it lks fr evidence f the same style traits in a secnd text. By carefully examining the tw, it judges whether bth share the same authr.
T test his mdel, he trained his mdel n sme data, and then gave it a new set f data and asked it t identify whether the tw dcuments came frm the same authr. Cmpared t authr-verifying sftware n the market, Jun’s mdel was mre veracius. He reprts a 25% increase acrss the bard”.
If a student’s wrk gets flagged as AI-written, Jun’s mdel explains hw the mdel arrived at that judgment. Teachers will understand hw a mdel made its decisin, therefre being able t talk t their students abut thse issues.
12. What is a feature f Jun’s sftware?
A. It cnsiders writers’ writing styles.
B. It is pr at analyzing AI texts.
C. It fails t search fr certain Al traits.
D. It can increase data prcessing speed.
13. Hw des Jun’s sftware detect AI-generated texts?
A. By quting a teacher.B. By giving examples.
C. By making cmparisns.D. By prviding statistics.
14. What des the underlined wrd “veracius” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Creative.B. Accurate.C. Cmplex.D. Practical.
15. Hw can Jun’s sftware benefit teachers?
A. Generate writing samples.B. Identify students’ emtins.
C. Simplify grading prcesses.D. Explain detectin decisins.
