T visitrs, Venice is a beautiful picture f histric buildings, waterways, bell twers, red rfs and a large winged lin, the symbl f the city, standing n the buildings acrss the city. Pssibly the mst famus lin is a brnze statue (青铜雕像) in the Piazzetta near St. Mark’s Square, and nw, researchers think the statue was made in China.
After studying samples (样品) frm the lin statue using lead istpe (铅同位素) tests, researchers frm nrthern Italy’s University f Padua fund that the brnze used t create the statue came frm the Yangtze River in China, accrding t a study published in the jurnal Antiquity.
This, they said, wuld explain why the 4-meter-lng and 2.2-meter-high statue had a strange style. Peple nce thught it was made lcally, in Syria r Anatlia. Accrding t the researchers, althugh it was placed near St. Mark’s Square in the 13th century, the lin lks mre like Chinese art frm the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) than wrks frm medieval Mediterranean Eurpe. They pint t the shape f the lin and marks left by remving its ld hrns (角).
“It is pssible that Marc Pl’s father and uncle, during the fur years they spent at the palace f Kublai Khan n their first jurney, bught the lin statue,” the researchers said, adding that the visit prbably tk place between 1264 and 1268.
The animal was actually a zhenmushu — a big, fierce, lin-like tmb guard frm the Tang Dynasty. Once the Pls sent the statue back t Italy after their visit t Mngl, it was prbably changed t lk like the symbl f St. Mark. Wrkers tk ff its hrns and added a “wig”
“As there is a dearth f written infrmatin, why and hw the lin was mved t Venice is still unclear. But we can nw cnsider it as a symbl f hw cnnected the medieval wrld was,” the researchers added.

A Sprague’s pipit — a kind f sngbird that shws if the grasslands are healthy — was mad at an enemy’s call and dived dwn t fight, nly t find a plastic decy (诱饵) tied t a ludspeaker. Caught in a net, it became part f Byce’s study n sngbird migratin (迁徙).
Fr years, tiny sngbirds like Sprague’s pipits have had secret migratin rutes (路线). Their small size and changing rutes made them hard t track again. But small radi-frequency rings changed this, leading t the creatin f the Mtus netwrk: a line f twers frm Canada t Argentina. These twers pick up signals (信号) frm the rings n birds, and give infrmatin n where they fly, when, and hw fast, making GPS n lnger necessary.
Researchers nted its size, put a Mtus ring n it and freed the pipit. Philip Taylr created the netwrk, which started in 2010 with twers at Ontari’s Lng Pint Bird Observatry. Quickly, it spread acrss Canada, Central America, and later the U.S. By 2015, it tracked birds acrss the wrld, uncvering new rutes fr ther types f birds like Swainsn’s thrushes and Arctic shrebirds. Tday, ver 55,000 animals have rings, using 2,200 statins in 34 cuntries. Researchers build and care fr the 6-t 11-meter twers, wrking with landwners and gvernments. Even with prblems like lightning r cws damaging twers, the netwrk grws.
Mtus makes it easy fr researchers t share cllected infrmatin. It’s cheaper than satellite tracking, a great tl fr studying migrating animals. Byce’s team used it t track Sprague’s pipits frm Central America t suthern Canada.
Of curse, the netwrk faces prblems, like when researchers have truble getting enugh mney r change prjects. But with mre glbal teamwrk, mre funding, and better technlgy fr twers and rings, the Mtus netwrk will get past its present trubles and play a big part in helping learn hw animals migrate in the future.
      12. What nce made it hard t retrack Sprague’s pipits?
      A. The difficulty in telling them frm ther birds.
      B. Their migratin rutes that were nt fixed.
      C. The lng jurneys they traveled.
      D. Their cleverness in aviding traps.
      13. What des paragraph 3 fcus n?
      A. The rapid develpment f Mtus.B. The great effrt t prtect pipits.
      C. The prcess f studying pipits.D. The reasn fr creating Mtus.
      14. What makes the Mtus netwrk different frm satellite tracking?
      A. It is mre affrdable.
      B. It can track mre kinds f animals.
      C. It prvides exact GPS infrmatin.
      D. It is nt limited by weather cnditins.
      15. Hw des the authr feel abut the future f Mtus?
      A. Curius.B. Hpeful.C. Dubtful.D. Uncaring.
