A famus American pet Rbert Frst nce said, “Petry is what gets lst in translatin. ”But XuYuanchng, well-knwn Chinese translatr, had tried t cnvey the beauty f ancient Chinese petry thrughut his life. His teacher Qian Zhngshu cmmented n his petry translatin, “Yu are dancing while chained by rhyme and rhythm, but the dance shws amazing freedm and beauty, which is quite impressive.”
Since 1978, Xu had published mre than 100 translated wrks in Chinese, English and French, reaching millins f readers at hme and abrad. Mst ntably, he translated Chinese pems int rhymed verses in bth English and French. He was als the first Asian winner f the Aurra Brealis Prize fr Outstanding Translatin f Fictin Literature.
Xu was knwn t be very fastidius in his wrk. Fr him, English is a “ scientific” language that needs exactness while Chinese is an “artistic” language that includes a wider range f cntent. Fllwing this principle, Xu kept nt nly faithfulness in the sense but beauty in sensibility in his translatin.
Thrugh Xu’s translatins, time-hnred Chinese wisdm has made an impact n Western scieties and the wrld. Fr example, when frmer US president Barack Obama tried t begin a healthcare prject during his presidency, sme senatrs disagreed at first. But after reading the pem titled Fishing in Snw translated by Xu, ne senatr was s impressed with the fisherman’s independent thinking that he chse t part with the party line t supprt Obama.
Having made such great achievements, Xu maintained a rutine. Every day he translated abut1, 000 wrds, wrking till 3 t 4 a. m., sleeping fr abut 3 hurs and getting up at 6 a. m. t cntinue.“ Translatin is a means f cmmunicating with the writer’s sul. A sudden flicker f a gd wrd r a gd line thrills every pre (毛孔) and every inch f my skin,” Xu said.

Scientists have cme up with a new way f identifying animals in an area by testing DNA sucked ut f the air. The researchers believe their new methd culd help scientists keep track f animals that are hard t spt, including endangered animals.
Tw teams f scientists — ne in Denmark and ne in the United Kingdm — came up with the same questin at abut the same time: Culd they identify the animals in an area frm DNA that was simply flating in the air?
Testing fr eDNA (‌“envirnmental” DNA) isn’t a new idea, but mst f the time, scientists lk fr eDNA in water, DNA in the air is usually s small that it wuld take a micrscpe t see it. The scientists didn’t have high hpes fr their experiment.
Neither team knew that the ther grup was wrking n a similar experiment. One cllected samples frm different lcatins at Denmark’s Cpenhagen Z, and the ther at Hamertn Z Park in the UK. The scientists used slightly different methds t cllect their samples. But basically, bth teams used vacuums (真空装置) and fans t cllect extremely tiny bits f DNA nt very high quality filters (过滤器).
In the labratry, they gt the DNA frm the filters and made cpies f it t study. By cmparing their samples with examples f DNA frm different animals, the scientists were able t identify many different animals at the zs.
The researchers in Denmark identified 49 different kinds f animals. The team in the UK identified 25 different kinds f animals. They even identified DNA frm animals that were inside sealed buildings. Each team nly discvered the ther experiment after they had written a paper abut their wn results. Instead f cmpeting, the tw decided t cmbine their results and publish a paper tgether.
Bth teams are excited abut the ways this new methd culd be used in the wild. Scientists have been lking fr better ways t track endangered animals withut interfering with them. If researchers knw where animals live, they can d a better jb f prtecting them. ‌“The next step is t figure ut hw t take this methd int nature,” says Dr. Bhmann.
8 What was the scientists’ attitude twards their experiment at first?
      A. Hpeful.B. Dubtful.C. Disappinted.D. Satisfied.
      9. Which descriptin abut the tw teams is crrect?
      A. They knew each ther very well befre.
      B. Bth f them are frm the same cuntry.
      C. Their research methds were nt exactly the same.
      D. They cperated frm the beginning f their experiments.
      10. What is the psitive effect f this experiment?
      A. It increases human interactin with wildlife.
      B. It enables the tw teams t cmpete in science.
      C. It culd help peple escape frm dangerus animals.
      D. It culd help prtect endangered animals in a better way.
      11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. A Grundbreaking Way t Test DNAB. DNA f Animals in the UK and Denmark
      C. Scientists Identify Animals by DNA in the AirD. Tw Experimental Teams Ding the Same Thing
Dgs feel their way thrugh the wrld with their nses. Researchers have started imitating this super skill with an artificial-intelligence-based detective tl. In a study published in February in PLOS ONE, a multinatinal team reprted an AI-pwered system that is as accurate as trained dgs at crrectly identifying cases f prstate cancer frm urine samples. Andreas Mershin, a research scientist frm Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy, wants t eventually integrate the technlgy int smartphnes: There wuld be a tiny sensr in the phne with AI sftware running in the clud.
Prstate cancer, the secnd mst deadly cancer in men wrldwide, is difficult t detect. The mst widely used test can miss 15 percent f cancers. Trained dgs, n the ther hand, were able t identify patients with prstate cancer frm urine samples mre than 96 percent f the time. Yet dgs can get bred and tired, s researchers want t develp an AI system that wrks mre cnsistently.
Living cells prduce chemicals that cme ut frm the skin, bld, urine and breath. Artificial nses, including the "Nan Nse" that Mershin and ne f his clleagues develped, can already detect thse chemicals at the same parts-per-billin cncentratin as dgs. The team added t the chemical sensing an artificial neural netwrk—a type f AI algrithm that can learn frm lking at examples hw t identify faces, fr instance.
As the 2015 Jurnal f Urlgy study shwed, dgs can be trained t reach mre than 96 percent accuracy, and the AI can be trained t reach that same rate. Mershin plans t train the AI algrithm using data frm the "Nan Nse", which is currently ne third the size f an iPhne 10 and culd be further shrunk t be integrated int smartphnes.
      12. What is the Nan Nse?
      A. A device.B. A methd.
      C. A database.D. A research team.
      13. What is the advantage f the AI system ver trained dgs in detecting prstate cancer?
      A. It has the ability t sense chemicals.B. It can cllect samples in the clud.
      C. It has the minimum errr.D. It can ensure cnsistency.
      14. Which f the fllwing can best replace he underlined wrd "shrunk" in Paragraph 4?
      A. Made smaller.B. Cut shrter.C. Expanded.D. Upgraded.
      15. What is the ultimate gal f the research?
      A. T train dgs t detect diseases.B. T identify artificial faces.
      C. T prduce AI nses t detect diseases.D. T add an AI sensr t the smartphne.
