Immediately after I saw him pull int the parking lt, I 3 his rder, having it ready by the time he walked in. If I had n ther wrk t d, I sat and talked with him. We learned a lt abut each ther. I culd nt help feeling srry fr him because his wife had recently passed away.
After a year f wrking every weekend, I eventually decided t leave and turned in my tw-week ntice. The mst difficult part f 4 was nt telling my bss, but infrming Frank. I felt like I was 5 him. When I finally brught it up, he 6 replied, “Oh, that’s t bad. I’m sure that the staff will miss yu.” I began t think that ur visits held n real imprtance t him, and that he wuld be just as 7 enjying his fd alne. 8 , n my last day, Frank came in with a card that simply read, “Yur kindness during the time we have spent tgether is heartwarming. Yu had n 9 t speak a wrd t me, let alne shw a real interest in ur cnversatins. Few things have brught me mre pleasure than ur weekly visits. Thank yu.”
A amunt f 10 I received fr such minr effrts is mind-blwing. Giving up my weekends fr a year was a small price t pay t grasp the remarkable effects f kindness.

The image f that staircase never left my mind. It had been frty years since I graduated high schl, but the staircase haunted my memries.
Bys wuld sit n bth sides f the staircase, rating the girls as we walked by. If they thught a girl was really ugly, they barked. Every time I walked up r dwn thse stairs, the barks, wfs, and laughter rang in my ears.
“Just ignre them,” my mther advised. And I did. On the surface. But inside the painful message that I was ugly rted deep int my sul.
Eventually, I graduated, gt accepted t cllege n the West Cast, and left small-twn Clrad behind me. I earned a degree in Cmmunicatins, launched a rewarding career as a writer and teacher, gt married, and raised tw amazing bys. But when I lked in the mirrr, the dubts returned.
Then I gt an invitatin t my frtieth high schl reunin. I didn’t like high schl, but I wanted t g back and tell thse bys ff. I wanted t tell them hw hurtful and unkind they were. And I wanted t shw them they were wrng. I had a husband, a family and all the things they’d made me feel I wasn’t wrthy f.
I practiced my speech in my mind as I ran errands (差事), cked dinner, and exercised at senir aerbics. In September, I drve dwn t the twn where I’d spent my high schl years. I put n my favrite bluse, tuched up my make-up, and steeled myself fr the Friday night pening receptin.
Maybe it’s true that memry is the first thing t g. On the night, peple greeted me plitely, drinks in hand, flattering me with “Yu haven’t changed at all.” I’d lk at the face and study the nametag with the graduatin pht, but it didn’t ring a bell mst f the time.
Had I cmpletely erased that whle perid f my life frm my memry? Was I at the wrng reunin? N, sme wmen remembered my mther being their Girl Scut leader. Others had kind things t say abut my father, a lcal cllege prfessr. My planned speech wilted (枯萎) n my lips. Instead, I chatted breezily abut my tw grwn sns, living in Seattle, and writing résumés fr Being wrkers. Peple were nice enugh, but aside frm a cuple f friends, I felt like I was talking t strangers.
It was pintless t hld a grudge (怨恨) against peple I culdn’t even recgnize. I was nly hurting myself by replaying thse memries in my mind. I knew I needed t frgive. A dark srrw lifted frm my sul. I felt happier, mre self-cnfident and attractive.
Back hme, ur senir fitness instructr nticed that I was wearing a new T-shirt. “Yu are really rckin’ that shirt,” she said.
I smiled. She’d said that befre, but this time I believed it.

Psychlgical science is full f interesting tpics, many f which tell a cherent picture f human nature, but sme f which create seemingly cntradictry stries. A case in pint is the tricky, and misunderstd, verlap between strength-based science and the research n narcissism (自恋).
There is nw cnvincing evidence t shw that narcissism is n the rise, especially in ur yuth. Sme researchers have gne s far as t say that it is ccurring in epidemic prprtins, with abut 25% f yung peple shwing symptms f narcissism. The inflated eg f Generatin Me is reflected in reality TV, celebrity wrship, ut-f-cntrl cnsumerism and materialism…perhaps even a new type f president.
We are crrect t be cncerned abut this phenmenn but ur fear that all kids are ptential narcissists has caused an unhelpful cunter-reactin t appraches that seek t make ur children and teens feel gd abut themselves.
In my wn research n strength-based parenting, it is cmmn fr peple t wrngly label this apprach as a recipe fr narcissism. Their argument seems t be that a child wh knws their strengths will autmatically view themselves as better than everyne else. It is argued that the self-assurance that cmes with identifying and using their psitive qualities will make a child arrgant, selfish and uncaring. Genuine cnfidence abut ne’s strengths is categrized as ver-cnfidence; desirable self-knwledge is branded as excessive self-admiratin.
Why des this ccur? It’s partly because mre is knwn abut narcissism than strengths. While strengths psychlgy has largely stayed within the limit f academic jurnals r has been applied nly within certain cntexts such as the wrkplace, research n narcissism has made its way int the mass media and int ur cllective cnsciusness. The New Yrk Times nted that narcissism is a favred “g-t” tpic and that peple everywhere are diagnsing thers with it.
The fear that a strength-based apprach will cause narcissism als ccurs because we unknwingly fall prey t binary (非此即彼) thinking. We mistakenly believe that ne cannt be bth cnfident and humble. We fcus n Dnald Trump and Kim Kardashian rather than Mahatma Gandhi and Mther Teresa. There’s n way that Gandhi and Mther Teresa culd have achieved what they did withut cnfidence in their strengths, and yet they are bth pillars f mdesty and selflessness.
When we assume that strength-fcus is the same as a self-fcus, we fail t entertain the idea that peple wh knw their strengths are, actually, mre likely t be pr-scial and fcus n helping thers.
It’s tempting t cnclude that every yung persn is at risk f becming a narcissist but I’d like t stand up fr the thusands f yung kids I have wrked with wh are caring, thughtful and humble—even when they use their strengths.
28.Why teenagers’ strengths are ften mistaken fr narcissism?
A.Teenagers with strengths are always arrgant, selfish and uncaring.
B.The public are mre expsed t research n narcissism.
C.There is a lack f strengths in ur cllective cnsciusness.
D.Numbers f peple are diagnsed with narcissism by dctrs.
29.The authr mentins Gandhi and Teresa in paragraph 6 t shw that________.
A.they are bth victims f binary thinking
B.public figures unknwingly fall prey t narcissism
C.cnfidence is quite imprtant fr celebrities
D.ne can be bth mdest and sure f himself
30.What’s the authr’s attitude twards yung kids’ strength-based appraches?
      A.Skeptical.B.Neutral.C.Favrable.D.Cautius.
31.Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
      A.Teens’ Strength Psychlgy
      B.Teens’ Narcissism Diagnsis
      C.Teens’ Anxiety and Depressin
      D. Teens’ Cnfidence Misunderstd

They say t find ut what yu really want, g back t when yu were a child.
When I was a kid, I really wanted t be a painter, but I was never great at it. I was discuraged, because in art classes my paintings were never the mst beautiful. In the third grade, we were given a prject t create a prtrait. I used the skills and tips we were all taught in class. After we were dne, we presented ur prtraits. We std in frnt f the class and explained ur technique. I remember lking at ther prtraits thinking,“We were given the same skills, why d theirs lk s prfessinal and mine lks s amateur?”

Yu have t learn hw t channel that energy int smething prductive.”S smetimes I channel that pain int art, int a painting.
Even if the picture desn’t turn ut aesthetically (美学地) pleasing by sciety’s standards, it’s still beautiful that I was able t create smething. My paintings may nt be a Basquiat, but they’re mine, s I lve them anyway.
