Wang Zhenyi, a wrld-leading scientist wh has made significant cntributins t the field f leukemia (白血病) treatment, has been hnred with China’s highest award, the Medal f the Republic. President Xi Jinping signed the rder fr this highly respected recgnitin, which Wang shares with three ther distinguished individuals.
In 1986, Wang made a significant achievement by successfully transfrming cancer cells in leukemia patients int nrmal nes during clinical practice. This innvative treatment has remarkably imprved the survival rate f acute prmyelcytic leukemia (APL), a particularly deadly frm f bld cancer. Wang’s methd has been used in many ther cuntries and regins, including Eurpe, Japan, the United States, Italy, Australia and Cuba.
Wang, nw 99 years ld and a prfessr at Shanghai Ruijin Hspital, as well as an academician with the Chinese Academy f Engineering, has devted his entire career t patient care. He saw patients suffering frm leukemia, especially APL, which tk their lives within half a year in 90 percent f cases. This experience inspired Wang t make defeating leukemia his life’s missin. His research began in 1979, and by 1986, he had discvered a medicine called all trans-retinic acid (ATRA) t treat APL patients.
He prvided this treatment t a critically ill five-year-ld girl, and after a week, her cnditin imprved significantly. Within a mnth, she was cmpletely cured.
