Students at Purdue University have created a rbt Purdubik’s Cube, which can slve a Rubik’s Cube (魔方) faster than any rbt ever.
The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by Ern Rubik. It rapidly became a ppular puzzle wrldwide. At first, peple just wanted t slve the puzzle. But sn, ne grup f users had a new gal — t slve the cube as quickly as pssible. These peple are knwn as “speedcubers”
Human speedcubers can slve a Rubik’s Cube in secnds, with the fastest time arund 3.05 secnds. But rbts, pwered by cmputers and fast-mving parts, d even better. In 2020, MIT students set a recrd with a rbt that slved it in 0.380 secnds. That made an impressin n Matthew Patrhay, wh was in high schl at the time. “I thught, ‘That’s a really cl prject. I’d lve t try and beat it smeday,’” said Patrhay. Nw Patrhay and three ther Purdue students have built a rbt that can slve a Rubik’s Cube far faster. Their “Purdubik’s Cube” rbt can slve a cube in 0.103 secnds— rughly ne-tenth f a secnd.
Last year, a grup f prfessinal engineers wrking fr Mitsubishi set the previus wrld recrd with a rbt that slved the cube in 0.305 secnds. Patrhay, Aden Hurd, Junpei Ota, and Alex Berta’s rbt is nearly three times faster — earning it a Guinness Wrld Recrd. They met thrugh a prgram fr real-wrld wrk experience, in which they built needed skills fr a senir prject and gt financial supprt frm a cmpany.
Purdubik’s Cube uses cameras and “cmputer visin” t detect each square’s clr quickly. Its prgram uses special strategies t slve the puzzle fast, with precise mtin cntrl. T perate this quickly, it uses a special cube that sits at the center f the rbt’s “arms” — letting it turn the cube’s sides. But rdinary cubes fall apart at such speeds, s students made a strnger ne. Patrhay says the rbt is s fast that “befre yu even realize it’s mving, we’ve slved it”
      4. What d we knw abut the Rubik’s Cube?
      A. It gained glbal ppularity early.B. It was inspired by schl speedcubers.
      C. It was first slved by MIT students.D. It remains unchanged since its creatin.
      5. Which can best describe Patrhay?
      A. Caring.B. Helpful.C. Cmpetitive.D. Demanding.
      6. What cntributed t Patrhay and his team’s Purdubik’s Cube?
      A. Mitsubishi’s previus wrld recrd.B. The Guinness Wrld Recrd recgnitin.
      C. An initiative building hands-n skills.D. Supprt frm prfessinal speedcubers.
      7. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
      A. The strengthened cube design.B. The factrs behind its recrd-breaking rate.
      C. The cube’s clr detectin.D. The speed-slving predictin.

Scientists have reprted n an unusual hybrid (杂交) bird sptted in Texas — a crss between a blue jay and a green jay.
Brian Stkes is a Ph.D. student at the University f Texas at Austin, fcusing n green jays — cmmn birds in Central America and Mexic. T track where green jays appear, he mnitred scial media psts abut birds. In 2023, he saw a pht f a unique bird there: It was blue, similar t the blue jay (cmmn in Eastern Nrth America), but had different clrs. Unlike blue jays, which have white faces, this bird had a black facial mark.
Stkes went t see the bird fr himself. Frtunately, he was able t catch the bird. Quickly, he gt a few pictures, and tk a bld sample. Wrking with a bilgy prfessr at the university, Stkes cnfirmed that the bird was a hybrid. The father was a blue jay and the mther was a green jay. Such a hybrid is very surprising. Lng, lng ag, bth kinds f jays develped frm the same kind f bird. But fr seven millin years, their species have been cmpletely separate.
In general, animal hybrids happen when animals begin turning up in places where they dn’t nrmally exist. Fr example, as the Arctic has warmed up because f climate change, plar bears have been travelling farther suth in search f fd. This has brught them in cntact with grizzly bears, which has resulted in hybrids f the tw species. These are smetimes called grlar.
The scientists say the jay hybrid is als likely the result f climate change. In the mid-1900s, the activity ranges f the tw birds did nt really verlap. But in recent years, as the climate has warmed, green jays have been mving farther nrth, and blue jays have been travelling farther west. Eventually, they have seen each ther in the regins f Texas, creating cnditins fr hybridizatin.
      8. Hw did Stkes initially cnduct research n green jays?
      A. He bserved them in the field.B. He partnered with a prfessr.
      C. He checked the psts nline.D. He tk their bld samples.
      9. What makes the discvery f this hybrid surprising?
      A. It’s a crss f distant species.B. It has mixed clr patterns.
      C. It was discvered in Texas.D. It presents unique facial marks.
10 Why des the authr mentin grlar?
      A. T intrduce a new species.B. T cmpare bear behavir.
      C T present an example.D. T supprt a viewpint.
      11. What des the underlined wrd “verlap” in the last paragraph mean?
      A. Meet.B. Exchange.C. Disappear.D. Frm.
      D
Parents acrss America are scheduling smething nce cnsidered natural: quality time with their wn children. At the same time, rmantic partners gt distracted by their devices during nearly 3 in 5 f their talks. And even when peple managed t sit dwn with each ther, ther pressures started t cme in: Nearly half struggle with packed schedules, just half with husehld tasks, clse t tw-fifths with wrk respnsibilities, and rughly a third with activities utside the hme.
The survey pints t a brader issue: Many families feel discnnected even when surrunded by peple. Mre than ne in five parents said it has been a year r mre since they had an hnest, face-t-face cnversatin abut hpes and dreams. Cnstant phne checking has becme the nrm, with 57% f parents frequently pening their devices nly t find n new messages. It’s n surprise, then, that 71% f parents said they wished they culd g back t a less digitally cnnected wrld.
Fighting back, 82% have set up device-free znes, particularly during dinner (47%), family mvie nights (38%), and utings (28%), seeking mments f laughter, and lking t the utdrs as a place where cnversatins feel real again.
      12. What key phenmenn des the survey reveal?
A Family time needs planning nw.
      B. Pressures reduce family relaxatin.
      C. Kids’ phne use wrries parents.
      D. Hnest cnversatins disappear ttally.
      13. Which is the percentage f a cuple being interrupted by mbiles while talking?
      A. Abut 33%.B. Abut 40%.C. Abut 50%.D. Abut 60%.
      14. What’s parents’ attitude t the grwing discnnectin in the huse?
      A. Uncncerned.B. Active.C. Discuraged.D. Unclear.
      15. What’s the best title fr the text?
      A. Mre Mbile Phnes in FamiliesB. Real Challenges f Busy Parents
      C. Digital Age’s Family CnnectinD. Mre and Mre Family Interactins

____19____ Outstanding teachers als encurage curisity, shw care, and adjust t hw different students learn. They build trust and let students ask questins and learn frm errrs. Their teaching belief is clear and imprtant: Real learning happens when students take part. Gd teachers knw that they can’t make students learn just by talking. Students have t be willing t experience it themselves.
S, gd teachers d mre than share knwledge. They build an envirnment that makes students want t learn — raising interest, helping them explre, and guiding them t think. ____20____ What students learn in this way is nt nly deep but als stays with them, ften ging beynd schl and influencing hw they deal with prblems in life.

      【答案】One pssible versin:
Then, ne mrning Thrne called us ver t the garden. He gt dwn n his knees, and with a gentle gesture, he pinted t the sil. T ur surprise, tiny green sunflwer shts had begun t push thrugh the surface, delicate but bright. We crwded arund the plt, rushing t get water and carefully water them, and the tensin that had been building up amng us slwly eased away. As the weeks went by, we kept visiting the garden — watering and weeding, n lnger cmplaining abut “wasting time”.
By late spring, we saw tall sunflwers standing straight and prud there. Once messy, the crner nw came alive! Sn, the sunflwers grew tall enugh t twer ver us, and thse heads, bright yellw like tiny suns, shne warmly in the sft sunlight. A light wind blew, making the flwers nd gently, as if saying thanks fr all the care we’d put in these weeks. We nce thught tending it wasted study time, but nw we knw: Learning matters, yet labr brings the jy f success. That lessn, we all agreed, was far mre valuable than any scre we culd get n the midterms.
