In Massachusetts, fd waste is a serius issue. When thrwn int landfills (垃圾填埋场), it prduces methane, a harmful greenhuse gas. T tackle this, the state has a rule: Large fd businesses must keep fd waste ut f the trash. Helping them fllw this rule is Heather Billings, a 63-year-ld waste reductin cnsultant.
One cld mrning, Ms. Billings visited the Prt Tavern, a sprts bar in Newburyprt. Abbie Hannan, the c-wner, had invited her t examine hw the restaurant dealt with its waste. In the kitchen, Ms. Billings nticed a simple but cmmn mistake: Fd scraps (下脚料) like tmat tps were being thrwn int a large trash can. Then, at the dumpster, she checked fr cmpstable (可用作堆肥的) items.
As a state-hired cnsultant, Ms. Billings tk ntes and gave practical suggestins. She recmmended using smaller buckets inside trash bins t cllect fd scraps, and she cnnected the restaurant with cmpsting services and fd dnatin prgrams. “Our biggest challenge is getting the staff t fllw the rules,” Ms. Hannan said. Ms. Billings respnded by shwing clear signs that culd be psted in the kitchen as reminders.
The state’s regulatin applies t places prducing ver half a tn f waste per week. While businesses that ignre the rule can be penalized, the authrities rarely step in. Still, many restaurants are trying. Sme even dnate extra fd t charities, as hunger remains a prblem in many cmmunities.
Massachusetts has made mre prgress than ther states with similar laws. Envirnmental grups hpe t g further, encuraging residents t cmpst at hme. Meanwhile, the law has als helped new cmpsting cmpanies grw.
Fr Ms. Billings, this wrk is mre than a jb. She sees it as a way t prtect the envirnment. At Prt Tavern, the biggest challenge was that fur restaurants shared the nly ne dumpster. “It’s cmplicated,” Ms. Hannan admitted. “Nt impssible,” Ms. Billings said with a smile.
24.What des the state rule require large fd businesses in Massachusetts t d?

Higher educatin in the United Kingdm is set t grw, with estimates suggesting that ne millin students culd apply fr universities by 2030, but there are still challenges despite this psitive utlk.
A majr issue is hw affrdable student life is, highlighted by the Higher Educatin Plicy Institute (HEPI). Their study acrss 10 UK cities fund that student husing csts nw vermatch the average lan given t students, wrsening financial pressures. The HEPI Student Academic Experience Survey fr 2023 paints a picture: half f students face mney prblems, leading many t skip meals and give up extra-curricular activities due t mney issues. This financial stress has pushed mre students int jbs, affecting their academic perfrmance.
The increasing cst f living is a crucial factr affecting whether students decide t stay in educatin and research indicates that mst students have thught abut quitting because f financial wrries, which threatens their academic prgress and the university’s incmes.
T tackle these issues, universities are lking t smart technlgy slutins, especially artificial intelligence (AI). Fr example, Staffrdshire University has intrduced the AI chatbt Beacn, which helps students with questins abut schedules and services. These innvatins nt nly make administrative tasks easier but als imprve supprt fr students and get them mre invlved.
Furthermre, AI can create better class schedules that suit students wh wrk, giving them mre flexibility. It can als ffer persnalized advice n mney management, helping students handle budgets and balance their studies.
AI als helps universities run mre smthly. By studying data, AI can predict which students might leave, letting schls step in early t help. This methd, seen at places like Nva Sutheastern University and the University f Lincln, ffers quick supprt t students in truble and raises hw many students stay in schl.
Bringing AI int higher educatin requires careful cnsideratin and adjustments t fix specific issues well. It shuld imprve the things already dne, help teachers, and make it easier t run schls while keeping students happy and perfrming well. As schls deal with hw hard educatin is tday, AI and smart tech shw gd ways t make all students feel included, supprted, and successful in class.
28. What is current cncern fr university students in the UK?
A. Living expenses. B. AI’s threats.
C. Tight schedules. D. Academic pressure.
29. What can AI d t help students?
A. T mnitr their wrk. B. T assist their hmewrk.
C. T help them make frtunes. D. T imprve their schedules.
30. Hw des the authr judge AI used in schl?
A. It is destructive. B. It is prmising.
C. It makes n sense. D. It has a lng way t g.
31. Which is a suitable title fr the text?
A. AI Cntributes t Tech Crisis B. AI Is a Duble-edged Swrd
C. AI Reduces Financial Stress D. AI Offers New Jb Opprtunities

Micrscpic plastic pieces are everywhere, and a new study reveals they exist in bttled water at cncentratins 10 t 100 times higher than previusly estimated. Researchers frm Clumbia University and Rutgers University fund rughly 240,000 detectable plastic pieces in a typical liter f bttled water, with the study published in the Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences.
The researchers used stimulated Raman scattering micrscpy and machine learning t detect seven cmmn plastics, testing three unnamed bttled water brands. Abut 10% f these particles(微粒)are micrplastics (5 millimeters t 1 micrmeter), and 90% are nanplastics(纳米塑料)( less than 1 micrmeter ). Micrplastics have already been fund in human lungs, bld and placentas. “Nanplastics culd be even mre dangerus than micrplastics because when inside the human bdy, the smaller it ges, the easier fr it t be misidentified as the natural cmpnent f the cell,” says Wei Min, a Clumbia chemistry prfessr and c-authr n the study.
The Internatinal Bttled Water Assciatin (IBWA) stated it had “very limited ntice” t review the study, arguing the new detectin methd needs t be fully reviewed by the scientific cmmunity and mre research needs t be dne t develp standardized methds fr measuring and quantifying nanplastics in ur envirnment. It added there is n scientific agreement n the ptential health impacts f nan—and micrplastic particles and media reprts unnecessarily scare cnsumers.
Phebe Stapletn, anther c-authr f the study, says researchers already knw that nanplastics are in water. “But if yu can’t quantify them r create images f them, it’s hard t believe they really exist. The imprtance f ur team’s research is that it nw reveals this clearly — it nt nly prvides cmputer-generated images, but als lets us measure the nanplastics. Even mre imprtantly, it ffers chemical analysis f thse measurements.” she says, adding that the research helps peple better understand hw much plastic humans usually take int their bdies and what effects it has.
Hw des the authr intrduce the new findings?
A.By giving examples. B. By quting an expert.
C.By defining a cncept. D. By prviding statistics.
What culd make nanplastics a greater threat cmpared with micrplastics?
A. Difficulty in detecting it.
B. Failure t create its image.
C. Larger quantity than micrplastics.
D. High cncentratin levels in bttled water.
34. What is IBWA’s attitude twards the study?
A. Objective. B. Apprving. C. Dubtful. D. Indifferent.
35. What is Phebe Stapletn’s remark mainly abut?
A. Uniqueness f the study. B. Significance f the study.
C. Ptential applicatin f the study.D. Pssible directin fr further study.
