D yu use emjis — small digital symbls — when texting smene r psting n scial media? One thing that peple cmmnly ntice when texting is that there are huge differences amng peple regarding emji use. Jeans are usually dyed with indig (用靛蓝染料染色). But this dark purple-blue dyeing substance desn’t easily mix int water. Thus, strng chemicals are used t break it dwn int a liquid that can turn the clth blue. Each year, thusands f tns f these strng chemicals g int making jeans, already hurting the wrkers wh handle them, let alne the fact that sme f the chemicals can cause cancer. S Qvrtrup, a chemist, wanted t find a safer and greener way t make jeans blue.
Fr their new dyeing technique, the researchers chse t use indican (糖芥), a substance in plants that can help prduce natural indig dye and break dwn in water withut harmful chemicals. Their first idea was t mix indican with an enzyme that wuld change it t indig. It wrked— the clth turned blue within a few minutes.
But then the team als placed pieces f clth in indican alne and left them by the windw in their lab. And t their surprise, these “were als turning blue withut us ding anything,” Qvrtrup said. As their research went n, the team fund that sunlight culd react with the indican n the clth and turn it t indig. Then, the team placed mre clth in an indican-nly liquid under different light surces. “Over the next cuple f hurs, the clth will turn blue, prving that the light will catalyze the clr,” Qvrtrup added.
These methds are bth prmising. The enzyme-based methd cut ut the harmful impacts by mre than 90 percent, cmpared t nrmal jeans dyeing and the light-driven dyeing might cut the impacts by mre than 70 percent, the researchers said. Hwever, the light methd might take up less land than the enzyme methd, and if the researchers can cut ut electricity csts by dyeing with just sunlight, the light methd may prve even better fr the envirnment.
“I hpe these methds will have an impact even befre they reach factries. Simply learning abut mre sustainable ways t make jeans may make jean-wearers think abut where their clthes cme frm. If yu want t wear blue jeans, be aware that there are better ways t make them than are used right nw,” Qvrtrup said.
      12. What is the prblem with the traditinal way f dyeing jeans?
      A. Cvering high labr csts.B. Missing the mark in fashin.
      C. Harming jeans makers’ health.D. Struggling with mass prductin.
      13. What des “catalyze” in paragraph 3 mst prbably mean?
      A. hide.B. Develp.C. Remve.D. Match.
      14. What is the advantage f light-driven dyeing ver enzyme-based dyeing?
      A. Its space-saving capability.B. Its little side effect n clth.
      C. Its efficiency in energy use.D. Its independence frm electricity.
      15. What d Qvrtrup’s wrds in the last paragraph mainly imply?
      A. Imprving factry equipment helps.
      B. Using green dye changes everything.
      C. Develping new dyes requires attentin.
      D. Raising cnsumer awareness matters.
