She’ll als check in with her husband Jhn, wh has helped her select the river and research the trips at their hme. “He’s my virtual Sherpa with benefits,” Brennan says, laughing. By regaining a takever f nn-native species, native species have a chance f recvery in their natural habitats, accrding t a new study led by scientists frm the University f Califrnia, Davis. The study, published in the jurnal Bilgical Cnservatin, explred hw remving invasive bullfrgs (入侵牛蛙) culd affect the native western pnd turtles (海龟), which have experienced a majr decline in their range.
Sme threats t the western pnd turtles cme frm habitat destructin, develpment, pllutin and disease, but invasive species are als a majr threat, accrding t the Center fr Bilgical Diversity. Reed canary grass and ther invasive plants make it mre difficult fr the western pnd turtles t find their nesting sites. Nn-native animals such as bullfrgs, red-eared slider turtles and largemuth bass als pse threats by increasing cmpetitin fr fd, while bullfrgs feed n the western pnd turtles, furthering their decline.
“One reasn the invasive bullfrgs are amng the tp wrst glbally intrduced pests is because they eat everything — anything that fits int their muth,” said Brian Tdd, senir authr f the study.
Frm 2016 t 2022, researchers studied fur sites in Ysemite Natinal Park, tw that maintained the bullfrg ppulatin and tw that had the bullfrgs remved. In the pnds withut bullfrgs, the researchers fund that western pnd turtles were between tw and 100 times mre plentiful cmpared t the pnds where bullfrgs remained. The team als fund that nly larger, lder pnd turtles survived in the pnds with bullfrgs.
The remval f the bullfrgs made the presence f ther native animals, in additin t the western pnd turtles, nticeable t researchers. “As bullfrg presence declined, we started t hear ther native frgs call and see native salamanders walking arund,” said Sidney Wdruff, lead authr f the study.
Althugh the authrs nted that bullfrg remval may nt wrk at all pnds due t cst and time restrictins, they explained that the study shwed the pssibility f using this apprach in the mst cnservatin areas. “While the challenges assciated with invasive species remval are significant, ur study shws the ptential benefit f stpping species declines and restring freshwater ecsystems,” they cncluded.
8. What can be learned frm paragraph 2?
A. Threats t pnd turtles remain unknwn.
B. Pnd turtles largely rely n plants t survive.
C. Nn-native animals are less capable f adapting.
D. Invasive species negatively affect pnd turtles.
9. What did the researchers d fr their study?
A. They relcated bullfrgs t fur sites.
B. They tracked the number f pnd turtles.
C. They tk measures t prtect ld turtles.
D. They intrduced ther species t the park.
10. What is the tw authrs’ pinin n bullfrg remval?
A. It definitely hlds certain value.B. It prves wrkable in any place.
C. It is barely linked with challenges.D. It brings mre ther invasive species.
11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Threats t Native Species VaryB. Study the Impact f Invasive Species
C. Welcme Native Pnd Turtles BackD. Pnd Turtles Experience a Big Decline

In a stimulating interview with the philspher Daniel Dennett in Living n Earth, Dennett shared that Charles Darwin and Alan Turing might make the same discvery. Darwin shwed hw yu can get the appearance f purpse and design ut f blind prcesses f natural selectin. And Turing said that any cmputable prblem can be cmputed by a machine withut understanding.
The hst then viced a cncern: as AI advances, machines will cme t lrd ver us. Dennett acknwledges there’s a takever risk but claims it’s misunderstd. The risk is nt that machines will becme autnmus rulers but that we will depend t much n machines.
The cre issue with AI is nt intelligence but autnmy. Even aut mechanics these days rely n cmputers and, in the era f self-driving cars, will any f us still knw hw t drive? Think what wuld happen if we lst electricity? We’d be thrwn back int the 19th century, as Dennett says. But things wuld be wrse, as we lack knw-hw that made it pssible fr ur ancestrs t live well in the lden days.
The truth is, we’ve been technlgical since ur dawn as a species. We first fund urselves in the archaelgical recrd where we saw a great expsitin f tls, technlgies, art-making and language. In a sense, being human means being like a cybrg, which is a technlgical extensin f ur natural selves. This suggests that at any time in ur develpment, a large-scale breakdwn in the technlgical system wuld spell nt exactly ur destructin, but ur cmplete rerganizatin.
Perhaps what makes ur current dilemma unprecedented (史无前例的) is the fact that we are s clsely netwrked. When the library f Alexandria burned dwn, bks and knwledge were lst. But in a wrld where libraries are replaced by their nline versins, it isn’t unimaginable that every library culd be simply deleted. What happens t us then?
12. Which f the fllwing statements might Dennett mst likely agree with?
A. AI’s develpment is bunded.B. AI desn’t have cmprehensin.
C. AI might be verly relied n.D. AI’s evlutin resembles natural selectin.
13. Which f the fllwing examples best matches the idea f “knw-hw” in paragraph 3?
A. A farmer crafts a table with ancient tls.B. A student uses a calculatr fr math tasks.
C. A nbleman hires servants t d chres.D. A chef prepares a dish with electrnic aids.
14. Why did the authr mentin libraries in paragraph 5?
A. T shw the technlgical stability.B. T emphasize the technlgical weakness.
C. T prve the technlgical safeguard.D. T illustrate the technlgical adaptability.
15. What is the main fcus f the text?
A. Hw technlgy breakdwn will change ur lives.
B. Hw the human-technlgy relatinship develps.
C. Whether artificial autnmy will threaten humanity’s existence.
D. Whether intelligence r autnmy is AI’s primary cncern.

The fresh autumn air filled the schl bus as Le and his team rde t the ld cmmunity center fr their weekend vluntary wrk. Their jb was simple: clean a strage rm that had been clsed fr years, s they culd build a new cmputer lab there. Le lved fixing machines-he’d even put small prjectrs and wire cutters in his bag, thinking abut hw t set up the lab’s wires later. Sam, the team’s prgrammer, was glued t his laptp, checking a simple app he made t track stars. Mia, their artist, sketched the trees and fences passing by in her ntebk.
When they pened the strage rm dr, dust flew ut and made them cugh. The rm was filled with ld textbks in bxes, cast-aside tls, and a brken chalkbard. As they mved a heavy, dusty wrkbench t sweep the flr under it, Sam suddenly stpped. “Guys, lk here!” He pinted t the wall behind the bench. There was a beautiful star map- its clrs were faint, but yu culd clearly see the cnstellatins (星座) cnnected by silver lines. The lines still glwed a little, because they were painted with special light-up paint. In the cmer, neat handwriting said, “Fr Eliza, wh lves the night sky.”
Mr. Evans, the center’s grayed-haired caretaker, walked ver when he heard them talking. “That was drawn by Mr. Hendersn, wh lived here years ag. He taught peple abut stars, and he painted this fr his daughter Eliza, wh mved far away fr cllege and nw als wrks in the cmmunity in memry f her father. After he passed away a few years later, we clsed the rm t keep his things safe... but it ended up being frgtten.”
Le held a clth t wipe dust, but he stpped halfway. He felt he was like wiping away smething imprtant. Mia’s eyes pened wide. “We can’t erase this! It’s like a father’s lve letter, made with paint.” Sam pushed his glasses up, his vice getting excited. “Erase it? Why d that? Hw abut saving this t surprise Eliza?”
