Seventeen-year-ld Dhanush Eashwar, wh has started cding at 7, is ne f the 2024 winners f Swift Student Challenge, which tasks yung creatrs with develping apps that slve real-wrld prblems. His submissin, Finger Dance, aims t facilitate better cmmunicatin between the deaf and hearing cmmunities. Using machine learning and augmented reality, it recgnizes users’ hand pses and classifies them as American Sign Language (ASL) letters, helping beginners learn ASL.
The winning prgram was develped specifically fr the challenge and isn’t in app stres. But the high schl senir is wrking hard n an even mre ambitius prject that he says will be available t dwnlad in the future: an app that translates ASL hand signs t English in real-time — “like a Ggle Translate fr visual languages,” he explained.
“I felt that there was a need fr technlgy t actually bridge the gap between bth f the cmmunities,” explained Eashwar, wh isn’t deaf himself but tk ASL in high schl. After attending sme deaf events arund the regin, he realized he had an pprtunity. “Machine learning is being used in s many different fields, but smething that everyne has is their phne, and that’s in their pcket.”
As ne f the 50 “distinguished winners” in the challenge, Eashwar attended Apple’s annual Wrldwide Develpers Cnference (WDC) in June and met the tech cmpany’s CEO, Tim Ck. “That whle experience was really surreal.
