Picture this: Australia, 1932. Retired sldiers f Wrld War I were given land t farm, nly t face their tughest enemy—giant, hungry birds!
After Wrld War I, the Australian gvernment sught t settle ver 5,000 sldiers as farmers in Western Australia. Hwever, the regin’s pr sil and unpredictable rainfall made farming difficult. When a severe drught in 1932 drve nearly 20,000 hungry emus (鸸鹋) int the farmland, the birds—breaking fences and damaging the crps—became the final straw fr the struggling farmers.
The gvernment’s respnse was quick and strange: it declared birds. What fficials expected t be an easy victry turned int a surprising and dd event knwn as the “Emu War”.
Armed with machine guns, the sldiers didn’t take their ppnents seriusly, assuming the flightless birds wuld be n match fr bullets. Yet the effrt quickly turned int chas. In the first three days, the men killed nly 30 emus as the birds demnstrated remarkable survival strategies. Instead f staying in large grups, the emus spread ut, making them difficult t target. Military reprts dcumented the birds’ astnishing speed, which culd reach up t 55 km/h acrss uneven grund. Mst incredibly, witnesses bserved what appeared t be cperative behavirs, with sme birds seemingly functining as guards t warn the grup f danger, enabling them t escape the gunfire.
After 45 days, the sldiers had killed nly abut 2,500 emus and used 10,000 bullets! Facing public criticism and grwing calls fr humane (人道的) treatment f the animals, the gvernment was frced t withdraw its frces.
While the Emu War ended in military failure, it transfrmed these birds int natinal symbls f survival and adaptability. Tday, the emu prudly appears n Australia’s cat f arms, symblizing nature’s ultimate victry.
24. Why did the gvernment declare war n emus?
A. T train sldiers.B. T prtect crps.
C. T save the straw.D. T test new weapns.
25.Which strategy did the emus NOT use t survive the attack?
A. Air attack. B. Lkut system.
C. Speed advantage.D. Flexible mvements.
26.What ultimately caused the gvernment t end the war?
A. Shrtage f bullets.B. Success f the missin.
C. Mercy frm the sldiers. D. Pressure frm the public.
27. Hw wuld the tw sides describe the event?
A. Emus: Birds f a feather flck tgether.
B. Emus: The best defense is a gd ffense.
C. Sldiers: Never underestimate yur enemy.
D. Sldiers: The pen is mightier than the swrd.

Fungi (真菌) are amng the mst imprtant rganisms n Earth. They’re key actrs in frest carbn strage, nutrient cycling, as well as plant grwth and resistance t envirnmental stress. They are als imprtant t human cultures, including as a surce f fd, medicine and art. This is why it’s an understatement t say that the wrld’s ecsystems and human scieties are shaped by fungi. And yet fungi cntinue t be an imprtant but verlked element f cnservatin strategies.
Arund 84% f knwn vertebrates (脊椎动物) have IUCN (国际自然保护联盟) cnservatin statuses, but nly 0.5% f described fungi are n the IUCN Red List. Fungi are hard t study due t their micrscpic size, shrt lifespans, and hidden habitats. Much f their diversity remains unknwn, as many seemingly identical fungi are genetically distinct species. This cmplexity makes fungi cnservatin less appealing t the public.
T prtect the unknwn, sme initiatives are emerging. In Quebec, ver 70 bilgists signed an pinin letter encuraging the gvernment t integrate fungi int its legislative framewrk. Such prgress is nt trivial and may help crrect miscnceptins abut fungi that cntinue t be present amng the public, ecnmic sectrs and plicymakers. Fr example, the miscnceptin that fungi are plants is smething that still persists t this day. Allwing this miscnceptin t cntinue is harmful t the field f fungi, and may be preventing it frm becming an independent discipline that deserves dedicated specialists.
Failing t prtect fungi threatens their vital rles in ecsystems and human life. Like plants and animals, fungi face extinctin risks frm habitat lss, pllutin, invasive species, and climate change. Many undiscvered species, especially in remte areas like rainfrest, may already be at high risk. T cnserve fungi, we must gather mre data n their diversity, fund research, and attract yung scientists t bilgy. The mre we study fungi, the clearer it becmes hw much we still dn’t knw.
28.What can we learn frm the first paragraph?
A. Human sciety and nature riginate frm fungi.
B. Fungi are the mst imprtant rganisms n earth.
C. Envirnmental pressure can cause enrmus damage t fungi.
D. Fungi are f great imprtance in ecsystems and ur scieties.
29.What cntributes t the lack f fungi cnservatin awareness?
A. Their simple genetic structure.
B. The difficulty in distinguishing species.
C. Their demanding needs fr living cnditins.
D. The insufficient financial supprt fr fungi research.
30.What des the underlined wrd “trivial ” prbably mean?
A. invaluable.B. insignificant.C. apparent.D. limited.
31.Which f the fllwing can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Fungi: Frgtten Guardians Awaiting Cnservatin.
B. The Cnservatin Crisis: Fungi in the IUCN Red List.
C. Explring the Unknwn: Future Challenges in Fungi Research.
D. Frm Plants t Independent Discipline: The Cgnitive Revlutin f Fungi.

A futuristic wrld has always been charming t humans. Mvies and sci-fi nvels have made us fantasize abut a sciety flded with humanid rbts that helps free us frm mind-numbing tasks while we fcus n things that require ur attentin r simply relax.
Brain-cmputer interface (BCI) (脑机接口) is ne such technlgy. Pineered by Eln Musk’s Neuralink, these brain implants culd enable mind-cntrlled cmputing—ptentially ging far beynd just reading thughts. This can slve many medical cnditins, including paralysis, anxiety, and addictin. BCI chips acquire brain signals, analyze them, and translate them int cmmands sent t utput devices that carry ut desired actins. It des nt use nrmal neurmuscular (神经肌肉的) utput pathways. It is ften used as assisted living devices fr individuals with neurmuscular disrders such as strke, r spinal crd injury.
Basically, BCI results frm the blend f technlgies frm the fields f electrical engineering, cmputer science, bimedical engineering, and neursurgery. These BCI devices are f tw types, namely, Nn-invasive (非侵入性的) BCI and Invasive BCI. Nn-invasive BCI tls use sensrs applied n r near the head t track and recrd brain activity. These nes can be placed and remved easily, but their signals may be indistinct and imprecise. Hwever, Invasive BCI requires surgery as they are t be implanted beneath the skull, directly int the brain, t target specific sets f neurns, thus prviding a much clearer and mre accurate signal between the brain and the device.
Using BCIs can ptentially enhance its persnnel’s physical and cgnitive pwer. While BCIs try t imitate the way ur brains functin, understanding the mechanics can be quite challenging fr researchers. Further, there have been cncerns n ethical grunds n this research. This includes privacy and security issues. Ethicists fear that captured neural signals can be used t gain access t a user’s private infrmatin. On the ther hand, because BCI chips and devices capture signals directly frm a subject’s nervus system, this transmitted data can be extracted fr evil purpses, r even the whle BCI system can be brken int by cybercriminals. Hpe these issues are addressed befre the cmmercial launch f BCIs in the future.
32. Accrding t the text, wh may benefit mst frm BCI?
A. A wman lsing her ability t speak.
B. An engineer thirsty fr high prductivity.
C. A patient incapable f mving after injuries.
D. An athlete aiming fr imprved perfrmance.
33. What can we learn abut BCI frm the third paragraph?
A. Nn-invasive BCI prvides clearer signals.
B. Invasive BCI enables precise neural recrdings.
C. Invasive BCI can be easily remved like a headset.
D. Nn-invasive BCI requires permanent skull implants.
34.What’s the ptential risk BCI may bring in the text?
A. Theft f brain data. B. Shrt service life f implanted devices.
C. High cst f BCI devices. D. Difficulty in understanding brain signals.
35. The authr’s attitude twards BCI is ________.
A. Strngly negative. B. Fully supprtive.
C. Cautiusly ptimistic. D. Cmpletely indifferent.

Chsing a Majr: Passin r Practicality?
第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One mrning when I wke up, a shcking realizatin struck me: I have prbably lived mre years than I have left. It wasn’t abut death, exactly—it was abut time. All thse things I’d tld myself I’d d smeday suddenly seemed ridiculus. Smeday was NOW.
That’s hw I fund myself standing in frnt f a pian later that day. I hadn’t tuched ne in decades. Nt since I was twelve, when I quit after my pian teacher sighed and said, “Adam, yu play like a typewriter.”
But my daughter, Olivia, had been taking lessns fr years. Watching her practice—her small hands mving effrtlessly thrugh Chpin’s ncturnes (《夜曲》)—I felt a stupid, stubbrn jealusy. Nt f her talent, but f her freedm. She played because she lved it. I had stpped because I was afraid f failing.
S, in secret, I signed up fr adult beginner classes at a cmmunity center. The teacher, a kind Russian wman named Irina, wuld tap my wrist with a pencil when I rushed. “Music is nt a race,” she’d say. "Yu must make friends with each nte." But t me, it was a race. Every wrng nte made me think I was t ld t learn new things.
Fr mnths, I practiced in the basement after everyne was asleep. My gal was simple: t play Ncturne in E-flat Majr (《降E大调夜曲》) at my fiftieth birthday dinner withut embarrassing myself. And the night arrived sn. Family and friends crwded ur apartment. Wine flwed, laughter rse, and then, all eyes turned t me as I sat at the pian. My hands shk. The first ntes sunded rugh and shaky. Halfway thrugh, my fingers gt mixed up, and I stpped dead. Silence fell. I culd almst hear the cllective thught: Pr Adam, having his midlife crisis at the pian.

Chsing a Majr: Passin r Practicality?
As a graduating senir, I ften discuss with my classmates whether t chse a cllege majr based n passin r practicality. After much thught, I firmly believe passin shuld guide ur chice f cllege majrs.
Firstly, passin acts as the strngest mtivatr. When we study what truly interests us, we naturally invest mre time and energy, which ften leads t better academic perfrmance. Mrever, a majr driven by passin can translate int a fulfilling career. Financial rewards may change, but the jy f engaging in meaningful wrk endures. Finally, the jb market is cnstantly evlving. Thse wh are passinate abut their field are mre adaptable, willing t learn new skills, and better equipped t face challenges. In cnclusin, fllwing ur passin is the path t bth persnal fulfillment and prfessinal success.
Pssible versin 1
Then, frm the crner, Olivia called ut, “Start again, Dad.” Her vice cut thrugh the silence like a clear nte, steady and sure. Smething in her expressin lsened the knt in my chest. Taking a breath, I psitined my stiff fingers nce mre n the keys. This time, I didn’t rush. I just fcused n the music—each nte, each pause, each breath between the phrases. Thugh my hands still stumbled, the meldy emerged, fragile but recgnizable. I knew the perfrmance was far frm perfect, and I braced myself fr the inevitable—the plite cughs r the awkward chuckles that wuld surely fllw such a clumsy attempt.
But this time, n ne laughed. They just... listened. My brther, wh had teased me mercilessly abut everything since we were children, std quietly by the windw. My wife watched with a sft expressin I culdn't quite read. When the final chrd faded, there was a mment f silence. Then came the applause. Olivia pushed thrugh the crwd and wrapped her arms arund me, “That was brave,” she whispered. And smehw, in that mment, all thse years f hesitatin, the fear f failure, and the weight f “smeday” melted int smething lighter. Tnight, I had nt nly befriended each nte, but had als made peach with the parts f myself. I was just here. Alive. And that was enugh.
Pssible versin 2
Then, frm the crner, Olivia called ut,“Start again, Dad.” Her vice was clear, cnfident, withut a trace f the embarrassment I wuld have felt at her age. That simple encuragement steadied me like an anchr in rugh waters. As my fingers fund the keys again, Irina's wrds flated back: “Yu must make friends with each nte.” This time, I let the music cme as it wuld—all the years f triumph and disappintment seeming t flw thrugh my fingertips int the pian.
