I’m Inés Azfeifa Rjas, a primate (灵长类动物) researcher with Salve Mns, a nnprfit wildlife rganizatin based in Tamarind, Csta Rica.
When I was a girl living n the suthern Pacific Cast f Csta Rica, my parents wuld take me t see glden hwler mnkeys (猴) in the frest mst weekends. Hwler mnkeys are like big, hairy gardeners, spreading seeds frm many trees. I understd at an early age that we shuld preserve the species. Therefre, I wanted t d smething t prtect bth the hwler mnkeys and their habitat.
Fr the past decade, I’ve studied the behavir f hwler mnkey grups in Guanacaste, a regin in nrthern Csta Rica where turism is grwing rapidly and hundreds f mnkeys die frm electrcutin (触电) each year. Fr my master’s degree at the University f Csta Rica, I evaluated hw mnkeys use mdern facilities such as pwer lines t navigate thrugh an urban area. I ended up taking a lt f electrcuted mnkeys t rescue centers. We are dcumenting hw this species’ behavir is changing in real time.
Althugh we dn’t knw whether the verall number f mnkeys is declining, we d knw that the grups lcated in the frest have rughly 25-45 individuals, cmpared with an average f nly 7 in the urban grups.
I’m teaching my clleague hw best t set a camera trap t mnitr hwler mnkeys. We can then determine where t add a tree bridge, a structure t help mnkeys living n the tree t cmplete their rutes fr fd and engage in scial behavirs safely. We als use the cameras t mnitr the cnditin and effectiveness f the bridges and evaluate their utcme. Over the past three years, ur measurements have shwn that mnkey electrcutin has decreased by 30% after ur effrts t maintain cnnectivity between tree rutes.
      4. Why did the authr chse t study hwler mnkeys?
      A. She was advised by her parents.B. She aimed t prtect them when yung.
      C. She was fascinated by their appearance.D. She majred in primate research in cllege.

Urban mbility is at a crssrads. Fr decades cities have been designed t cater t cars, with cuntless rads, plenty f parking, and laws that separate residential areas frm cmmercial and industrial znes. This has made cities less livable, increasingly plluted, and cntributed t scial inequality. But nw, a new visin fr urban mbility is emerging, ne that priritizes peple ver vehicles, reduces carbn emissins, and enhances the quality f urban life.
At the heart f this transfrmatin are technlgical innvatins that are reshaping hw peple mve within cities. Electric vehicles (EVs) are becming mre affrdable and accessible. Autnmus vehicles, thugh still in their early stage, hld the prmise f reducing traffic accidents and jams by enabling mre efficient use f rad space. And shared mbility services, such as bike-and car-sharing, are making it easier fr peple t get arund withut wning a persnal vehicle.
The shift twards mre sustainable urban mbility is als being driven by a change in cnsumer preferences. Yunger generatins, in particular, are less attached t the idea f car wnership and mre pen t alternative mdes f transprtatin. It is being fueled by cncerns abut climate change and air pllutin, as well as the increasing cst f wning and maintaining a car in urban areas. As a result, cities are seeing a grwing demand fr green transprtatin ptins.
Hwever, the transitin t a mre sustainable and intelligent urban mbility system is arduus. One majr challenge is the need fr significant investment in new infrastructure (基础设施), such as charging statins. Additinally, ensuring the fair distributin f these benefits acrss different ecnmic grups is crucial, which helps t prevent widening scial gaps. What’s mre, the success f urban mbility innvatins depends n public acceptance and trust. Overcming these challenges will require jint effrts frm gvernments, private sectrs, and cmmunities.
In cnclusin, the future f urban mbility is set t experience significant transfrmatins. As cities cntinue t grw and evlve, embracing these changes will be crucial in shaping the urban landscape f tmrrw.

      D. They lng t be healthy thrugh active transprt.

Orienting yurself in the darkness f a cave seems like a difficult task. But sme bats seem t have a clever slutin. Greater muse-tailed bats live in grups inside small caves where flying is challenging, s they hang frm the cave’s walls and mve deeper int it by crawling backwards. They mve this way in many situatins, such as in respnse t the appearance f a natural enemy, r when they want t find a better psitin in the cave.
Bilgists have lng wndered what rle these bats’ unusually lng tails play as they crawl inside the caves, s Yssi Yvel at Tel Aviv University and his clleagues designed an experiment t put the bats’ tails t the test.
In the experiment, the researchers recreated a set-up accrding t the inside f a cave, creating a maze (迷宫) with bstacles similar t the uneven, rcky landfrm the bats wuld encunter naturally. The team measured hw lng it tk fr the bats t climb the wall while crawling backwards, and hw smthly they were able t d s, first naturally and then with their tails anaesthetised (麻醉).
The bats used their tails like a blind walking cane, swinging them frm side t side t detect bstacles and climb mre safely and efficiently. In cntrast, when the researchers anaesthetised the bats’ tails, their climbing time increased by an average f 10%, and the bats made mre side mvements instead f mving upward, apparently trying t find their way. “When yu walk backwards, yu can still feel with yur bdy and with yur legs,” says Yvel. “It’s clear that they can d it. But there was a significant reductin in efficiency.”
While ther bat species have lng tails, the researchers say this is s far the nly ne recgnized t find its way in the darkness using this distinctive strategy. “I dn’t think this is general fr bats with lng tails,” says Yvel, “until further research is dne, we dn’t really knw.”
      12. Why d greater muse-tailed bats crawl backwards in caves?
      A. T scare ptential enemies away.
      B. T cnserve energy while mving.
      C. T make a quick escape frm inside.
      D. T adapt t the narrw envirnment.
      13. What was the impact f tail anesthesia n bats?
      A. The maze became invisible t bats.
      B. Bats’ perfrmance declined in speed.
      C. Bats began flying frward instead f crawling.
      D. The ther bdy parts functined mre efficiently.
      14. What did the experiment reveal abut bats’ tails?
      A. They help bats t cmmunicate with each ther.
      B. They act as a sensr t help bats navigate in the dark.
      C. They ffer bats frces fr gripping cave walls while mving.
      D. They are primarily used fr balance during backward crawling.
      15. What is the mst likely fllwing step fr Yvel’s research team?
      A. Train bats t crawl frward efficiently.
      B. Fcus n hw bats use tails while flying.
      C. Examine tail navigatin in ther bat species.
      D. Study hw tail lengths influence bats’ speed.
