As the Chinese submersible (潜水器) Fenduzhe dived deeper, Weishu Zha — an micrbilgist at Shanghai Jia Tng University-glimpsed creatures glwing green, yellw, and range against the dark. Upn reaching the sea flr, mre than 10,000 meters dwn, the team switched n the submersible lights t reveal “a prfund and mysterius blue” filled with drifting creatures. “At that mment,” Zha says, “I knew immediately that the deep cean must be a much mre thriving habitat than we had imagined.”
The Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench (海沟), the deepest f the wrld’s trenches, has lng fascinated scientists and adventurers alike. T reach thse depths, researchers used Fenduzhe, which Duglas Bartlett, a deep sea micrbilgist, describes as “an engineering miracle.” Capable f carrying three peple t the very deepest parts f the cean, the vessel (船) is equipped with a pair f rbtic arms and a sample basket, enabling it t cllect hundreds f samples in a single dive. Between August and Nvember 2021, Fenduzhe made dzens f dives in the Mariana Trench and neighbring regins, bringing back numerus samples.
“An incredible level f diversity was uncvered,” Bartlett says, referring t ne new study that identified mre than 7,000 new species in the Mariana Trench, 89% f them new t science.
