Teaching abrad can be daunting at first, taking that step int the unknwn. But since I started the TEFL (Teaching English as a Freign Language) jurney, I haven’t lked back. It has pened s many drs fr me, including wrking abrad and seeing the wrld.
I knew I wanted t travel, and that TEFL was the way t make that pssible by earning an incme alng the way. S t get started in this career, I gt a TEFL certificate nline.
Over the last fur years, I have taught at an Italian summer camp, teaching English in Italy and Ls Angeles. This gave me s much experience, and if yu are interested in shrt-term wrk, there are many TEFL summer camps all ver the wrld. Since then, I have been able t backpack arund Sutheast Asia by wrking remtely teaching my students nline. All I need is a laptp and gd Wi-Fi While n my travels, I hmeschled children in Thailand in return fr free accmmdatin, fd, and a weekly wage. This career can make travel s accessible.
I knew I wanted t give back t a cmmunity alng the way. This is when I decided t vlunteer at a schl in Cambdia in return fr free accmmdatin and meals. This was a very different experience frm what I was used t, but I believe it has made me a strnger teacher. I still cntinue t wrk with my students in Cambdia mnthly ver vide call.

A new study frm the University f British Clumbia Okanagan (UBCO) says students appear t be using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) respnsibly, and as a way t speed up tasks, nt just bst their grades. Dr. Meaghan MacNutt, wh teaches prfessinal ethics (伦理学) in the UBCO Schl f Health and Exercise Sciences (HES), recently published a study which cntradicts cmmn cncerns abut students’ use f AI.
Students in three different curses, almst 400 participants, cmpleted a survey abut their use f AI n at least five reflective writing assignments. All three curses used an identical AI plicy and students had the ptin t use the tl fr their writing.
While nly abut ne-third f the students used AI, the majrity f users, 81 percent, reprted their GenAI use was inspired by at least ne f the fllwing factrs: speed and ease in cmpleting the assignment, a desire fr high grades and a desire t learn. Abut 15 percent f the students said they were mtivated by all three factrs, with mre than 50 percent using it t save time n the assignment.
“There is a lt f speculatin (猜想) when it cmes t students’ use f AI,” MacNutt says. “Hwever, students in ur study reprted that GenAI use was mtivated mre by learning than by grades, and they are using GenAI tls selectively and in ways they believe are ethical and supprtive f their learning. This was smewhat unexpected due t the cmmn perceptin that undergraduate students have becme increasingly fcused n grades at the expense f learning.”

We’ve all felt guilty when fruit and vegetables g bad befre we culd eat them. Nw, researchers frm MIT and the Singapre-MIT Alliance fr Research and Technlgy (SMART) have shwn they can extend the shelf life f harvested plants by injecting them with melatnin (褪黑激素) using bidegradable micrneedles (可生物降解微针).
That’s a big deal because the prblem f fd waste ges way beynd ur salads. Mre than 30 percent f the wrld’s fd is lst after it’s harvested — enugh t feed mre than 1 billin peple. Refrigeratin is the mst cmmn way t preserve fds, but it requires energy and equipment that many regins f the wrld can’t affrd r lack access t. The researchers believe their system culd ffer an alternative r cmplement t refrigeratin.
“This is the first time that we’ve been able t apply these micrneedles t extend the shelf life f a fresh-cut crp,” says Benedictt Marelli, the study’s senir authr, assciate prfessr f Department Civil and Envirnmental Engineering at MIT. “We thught we culd use this technlgy t deliver smething that culd regulate r cntrl the plant’s pst-harvest physilgy.”
Central t their apprach are patches f silk micrneedles. The micrneedles can get thrugh the tugh, waxy skin f plants withut causing a stress respnse, and deliver precise amunts f melatnin int plants’ inner tissues. Fr the study, Marelli and researchers frm SMART applied small patches f the micrneedles cntaining melatnin t the base f the leafy vegetable, pak chy.
After applicatin, the researchers fund the melatnin was able t extend the vegetables’ shelf life by fur days at rm temperature and 10 days when refrigerated, which culd allw mre crps t reach cnsumers befre they’re wasted.
“Pst-harvest waste is a huge issue. This prblem is extremely imprtant in emerging markets arund Africa and Sutheast Asia, where many crps are prduced but can’t be maintained in the jurney frm farms t markets,” says Benedictt.
