Walking int Dryden Theater, I felt as if I had stepped int a time machine — the traditinal, ld-timey bx ffice, tns f ld-style mvie psters n the walls. As everyne tk their seats, an lder gentleman wh lked like he walked straight ut f the 1920s spke t all f the attendees.
Nrmally, Philip Carli is the pianist playing the live accmpaniment fr the films. Hwever, The Barker has music synchrnized (同步) with the film, s he was tasked with giving the audience a histrical backgrund f the film. Carli’s wide breadth f knwledge abut the backgrund f the film made it feel as if I were transprted t the time and place f The Barker befre the start f the film.
Earlier, films were played with live accmpaniment, cntained intertitles t add cntext, and sme added sund bites. With the inventin f synchrnized sund, films slwly added talking dialgue in scenes ccasinally. The Barker, released in 1928, is cnsidered a “part-talkie”.
The film, which explres the lives f wrkers, is the first appearance f all f the main cast in a talking rle. It was revlutinary fr the technlgy but als fr the actrs. My film experience cnsists f mstly talkies (有声电影), s watching The Barker, I felt like I witnessed smething brand new.
The experience was unlike any mvie-ging experience I have ever had. Since viewing films has gradually been reduced t streaming services, especially since the pandemic (疫情), this has increased the accessibility f film but we are stripped f a scial experience t watch a mvie — ne that attending The Barker reminded me f. This allwed us t return t the mvie-ging adventure. Finally, everyne wanted big screens and surrund sund rather than the tiny screens in bedrms. Mre imprtantly, we were all able t interact with a piece f cntent alngside ther peple.
The experience brught back the pastime f ging t the cinema — ne that I think we shuld cntinue t enjy. I say we take a page ut f the 1920s playbk and return back t the cinema.
      24. Wh is Philip Carli?
      A. A famus pianist in the film.B. A persn intrducing the music.
      C. A staff member in a bx ffice.D. A musician playing music live.
      25. What can we knw abut The Barker?
      A. It had an ld-style mvie pster.B. Its main cast had dialgues.
      C. It was a talkie abut wrkers.D. It attracted quantities f audience.
      26. What des the underlined wrd “stripped” prbably mean in paragraph 5?
      A. Disapprved.B. Dispssessed.C. Transferred.D. Transfrmed.

      A. T intrduce a brand new film.B. T cmpare silent films and sund films.
      C. T appeal fr seeing films in the cinema.D. T shw the authr’s preference fr films.
      C
Histry is written, read, tld — but rarely ever is it smelled.
Histrians and scientists acrss Eurpe have nw gtten tgether with perfumers (调香师) and museums fr a unique prject: t reveal what Eurpe smelled like between the 16th and early 20th centuries. A Eurpean street tday may smell like cffee, fresh-baked bread and cigarettes. But what did it smell like hundreds f years ag? As part f this three-year-lng prject called “Odeurpa,” the researchers want t find all the ld scents (气味) f Eurpe — and even recreate sme f this ancient smellscape: frm the dry tbacc scents t the smelly canals.
T d this, they will first build artificial intelligence (AI) that will be trained t g thrugh histrical texts, written in seven different languages, fr any descriptins f scents. The AI will als be trained t detect images f bjects in the texts that might be scented. The team will then use this infrmatin t create an nline encyclpedia (百科全书) f smells frm Eurpe’s past.
The encyclpedia will include the meaning f certain scents and will trace the stries behind scents, places and related practices, accrding t prject leader Angela Lee. “This database will becme a library fr the smell heritage f Eurpe, enabling future generatins t access and learn abut the scented past.” The encyclpedia will als include descriptins f peple fr whm smell was imprtant.
The researchers will then wrk with chemists and perfume makers t recreate past smells and figure ut hw t display the smells in museums and ther histrical sites. With current technlgy, almst every scent can be prduced. “The mre difficult part f the prject will be t find descriptins f scents, because peple haven’t always talked r written abut them,” Lee said.
Scent plays a central rle in ur everyday life, even acting as a pwerful time machine int ur wn past with its ability t activate lng-frgtten memries. But it’s als a key tl in telling the stries f thers. “Scent gives us access t the past in a much mre direct and emtinal way than language and images,” Lee said.
      28. Why did the researchers start the “Odeurpa” prject?
      A. T reprduce the scented past f Eurpe.B. T make perfumes f traditinal scents.
      C. T analyse the typical smells f Eurpe.D. T rebuild a histrical Eurpean street.
      29. What will the AI d in the prject?
      A. Cllect smell-related data.B. Write interesting stries behind smells.
      C. Detect bjects by smell.D. Describe smells in different languages.
      30. Which f the fllwing is the biggest challenge the prject faces?
      A. Scents f the past are hard t keep.B. Technlgy t reprduce scents is pr.
      C. Recrds f scents are rarely fund.D. Display f smells in museums csts a lt.
      31. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
      A. The applicatin f past scents.B. The effect f scents n memry.
      C. The rle f scent in stry-telling.D. The value f understanding scent.

Usain Blt burned abut 10kcal f energy t win his gld during the 200-metre spring final at the Olympic Games, which culd rughly pwer an ld 60W light bulb fr 11 minutes. If yu culd make use f all the pwer generated by all the athletes during the Games, yu wuld still be nwhere clse t reaching the 29.5 billin Watts cnsumed verall by the athletes, spectatrs and rganizers ver the event. We take sprt fr granted, but d we ever cnsider its cst t the planet?
Frm the water required t maintain the glf curse during The Masters turnament t the hundreds f flights it takes t bring ftball fans t a Wrld Cup, majr sprts events are nt helping much in the fight against glbal heating. What’s mre, there is a lack f recgnitin within sprt f its respnsibilities and little discussin abut pssible slutins.
This is strange, given that the effect wrks bth ways: the climate crisis is nt just affected by sprts, but it is already having a negative impact n many sprts. When ice-climber Will Gadd set ut t cnquer the wrld’s glaciers, he didn’t realize it wuld becme a race against climate change. “I thught glaciers are there frever.” When he arrived at the summit, Gadd was shcked: “The ice…wasn’t there. The things I planned t climb were gne.”
Glbal heating is nticeable in ther sprts. Amy Steel played prfessinal netball until she suffered frm heatstrke after playing in 39℃ cnditins and unfrtunately, the damage was permanent. Nt nly that, but extreme weather events made mre frequent as a result f glbal heating mean sprting events are mre ften delayed r canceled. This has cst sprt billins in ptential earnings.
Yet sprt can be a pwerful mtivatr: it can unite whle natins behind its teams. Culd sprt have a rle t play in driving climate awareness? Will Gadd and Amy Steel are amng many athletes wh think s? One thing is certain. Sprt must put climate change at the tp f its agenda and decarbnize at a Usain Blt-like pace t make a difference.
      32. What is the main fcus f the first paragraph?
      A. Why d sprts events cnsume energy?B. What is the energy impact f sprts events?
      C. Hw much pwer d athletes generate?D. Hw did Blt cntribute t the envirnment?
      33. Why des the writer use Will Gadd and Amy Steel as examples?
      A. They initiated ec-friendly sprts practices.B. They sustained permanent injuries in sprts.
      C. They fell victim t climate-related incidents.D. They achieved recrd-breaking perfrmances.
      34. What effect f glbal heating n sprts is mentined in the text?
      A. Lengthened utdr sprts seasns. B. Tugher facility restrictins.
      C. Higher athlete training standards. D. Substantial financial lsses.
      35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Athletes against Glbal HeatingB. The Impact f Climate Change n Sprt
      C. Sprts in the Climate CrisisD. The Envirnmental Csts f Outdr Sprts

Officer Jnda was driving n a dangerus rad ne cld, dark winter night. The strm made it difficult t see, but she culd tell the car in frnt f her was swaying. She still culdn’t shake ff the terrible image f that teenager screaming fr help, her help. Help that she had been unable t give as she was driven back by the intense heat f the car fire. These were memries Jnda culd never really turn ff. She cunted n her training fr supprt, and these days she never ignred any signs f the next accident.
Her partner, David, tk the first step. “Let’s pull that car ver befre smene gets hurt,” he said. The car ahead slwed dwn, but nt enugh t stp, and ended up sliding ff the rad int the Daltn River. Jnda quickly stpped her plice car and rushed t the water’s edge, yelling at David t call fr backup. The rain had caused the river t rise and the car was half swallwed, trapped against a tree, and the passenger seat was underwater. Jnda was filled with a sense f dread (害怕).
      Sandy
