The idea that smiling can make yu feel happier has a lng histry. In 1872, Darwin mused (沉思) abut whether an emtin that was expressed wuld be felt mre intensely than ne that was repressed. Early psychlgists were musing abut it in the 1880s. Mre than a hundred studies have been published n the tpic. And it’s a trpe (比喻) f pp wisdm: “Smile, thugh yur heart is aching,” sang Nat King Cle in 1954. “Yu’ll find that life is still wrthwhile, if yu’ll just smile.”
In 2018, scial psychlgist Fritz Strack published a study that seemed t cnfirm that facial feedback was real. The researchers asked participants t hld a pen in their muths in a psitin that frced them either t bare their teeth in a cpy f a smile r t purse their lips arund the pen. T make sure that n ne was clued in t the researchers’ interest in smiles, the experimenters tld participants that they were explring hw peple with physical disabilities might write r perfrm ther rdinary tasks.
When bth grups were shwn a set f newspaper cmics — specifically, illustratins frm GaryLarsn’s The Far Side — the teeth-barers rated the images as funnier than the lip-pursers did. This was a big deal fr the facial feedback hypthesis (假设): Even thugh participants weren’t thinking abut smiling r their md, just mving their face int a smile-like shape seemed t affect their emtins. And s the finding made its way int psychlgy textbks and cuntless news headlines. Decades f cnfirmatin fllwed, as researchers published ther experiments that als shwed supprt fr the facial feedback hypthesis. But in 2025, all at nce,17 labs failed t repeat the pen study.

When unethical (不道德的) behavir is criticized, demands are ften met with defensiveness and denial. Hw can we vercme this reactin?
New research by Lauren Hwe, an assistant prfessr at the University f Zurich, identifies a way that criticism can be mre effective. A series f experiments invlving mre than 1,400 participants shws that criticized grups are mre likely t take criticism t heart when the messenger nt nly criticizes the grups, but als shws cncern fr the issues that the criticized grups themselves face.
When criticizing grups, messengers ften address the grup by pinting ut hw the grup is causing harm t anther grup and asking them t change their ways. “What messengers may nt realize is that when a persn accuses a grup f causing harm like this, right away, members f the grup may believe that the messenger views their grup as immral and des nt care abut their utcmes,” Hwe explains. “We find in ur research that when messages include dual (双重) cncern by expressing cncern fr the grup that is criticized while still accusing the grup f causing harm, it reduces this prblematic inference, and thus dual cncern messages are mre effective at encuraging members f a grup t agree with the criticism f their wn grup.”
The research tested the idea in campaigns: Participants read a pster advcating stpping prejudice against a grup with whm they persnally disagreed. The pster led participants t agree 8.6% mre strngly that their disfavred grup faced unfair and specific prejudices when the pster cnveyed that the advcates als were cncerned abut the prejudices that many ther grups faced.
What the research shws, Hwe summarizes, is that criticism wrks better when it is dne with care. She suggests, “When messengers pint ut harm r wrngding, they might cnsider what challenges the grup that they are accusing f harm faces.” Messengers may want t acknwledge these challenges, if apprpriate, t signal t their audience that they are nt dismissed as immral. As messengers raise their vices t criticize ne grup fr harming anther grup, their arguments are mre persuasive when they emphasize cncern fr the criticized grup.
      12. What des the study by Lauren Hwe mainly fcus n?
      A. The impact f public criticism n individuals.
B The strategies fr making criticism mre effective.
      C. The effectiveness f public criticism in changing behavir.
      D. The imprtance f reducing defensive reactins t criticism.
      13. Why might dual cncern messages be useful?
      A. They fcus n the benefits f changing behavir.
      B. They make the criticized grup feel mre pwerful.
      C. They highlight the harm caused by the criticized grup.
      D. They reduce the perceived mral judgment f the messenger.
      14. What is mainly discussed in paragraph 4?
      A. Hw the researchers tested their idea.B. What the participants faced in criticism.
      C. Hw criticism helped participants in life.D. Why mst participants culdn’t handle criticism.
      15. What des the authr imply in the last paragraph?
      A. Bitter criticism is much mre effective.
      B. The harm caused by criticism is unavidable.
      C. Expressing cncern can make criticism mre persuasive.
      D. Messengers shuld avid criticizing grups facing challenges.
