      I encuntered the classics in university. I was 19, in lve with literature and pursuing an undergraduate degree in English Literature. But with a lack f life experience, exams and fcusing n grades, I culdn’t truly appreciate them. Middlemarch, The Picture f Drian Gray, Pride and Prejudice, Madame Bvary: I lved these bks, but I didn’t really get them.
      Sme 40 years later, as an editr and authr, it’s my jb t understand what makes a bk tick. When a clleague suggested we decnstruct (解构) classics, I was excited. I had n idea what I was in fr. Many were rereads f nvels I lved. I wndered if they wuld still resnate (引起共鸣) and if my technlgy-damaged attentin span culd handle them.
      Reading Middlemarch when yu’re 19 is very different frm when yu’re 60 and have been thrugh, well, life. Much f what Elit was ding with marriage, relatinships and expectatins went ver my yung head. The characters and dialgue are masterful.
      Hwever, rereading Middlemarch was a scary idea. It’s a brick f a bk with tiny print. S I tried the audibk instead. I was swept away: I didn’t want t d anything except listen. I tld a friend t read it again, amazed by hw gd, hw relevant it is, even thugh it was published in 1871.
      Maybe life hasn’t changed as much as we think. Madame Bvary gives big scial media vibes. Everyne else is having a better time than Bvary. Everyne’s grass is greener. Nthing lives up t her expectatins. The Picture f Drian Gray shws that ur bsessins (痴迷) with yuth and beauty are nthing new. Oscar Wilde wuld have a lt t say abut tday’s selfies and scial media persnas (表面形象), which can be far frm the truth.
      We gave these bks the attentin they deserved-attentin I culdn’t give at age 19. That’s why I recmmend rereading. These authrs understd smething abut humanity that still resnates, still makes us questin ur life chices.
      Reading the classics is a way t reclaim (重拾) smething in danger f being lst: the enjyment f mastery in language, f characters s alive they culd walk int ur living rm. Huanyu “Larry” Cheng and his clleagues at Penn State University, the flexible, stretchable device incrprates sensrs that measure biaxial mechanical strain (双轴机械应变), bdy temperature, sweat-caused humidity, and bld xygen levels. These sensrs are piled like pancakes, separated by thin sheets f different materials that keep their signals and measurement methds frm meddling with ne anther. Other cmpnents include a printed circuit bard, wireless charging cil (线圈), 5-vlt battery and Bluetth chip. All f these pieces are enclsed within a waterprf cvering, with the whle device measuring abut 6 cm in length.
      When the sticker is temprarily attached t a patient’s face, its strain sensr mnitrs their skin mvements alng tw axes, wirelessly relaying the data t an app n a clud-cnnected smartphne r tablet. AI-based algrithms (算法) in the sftware are in turn able t deduce(推断) the persn’s current facial expressin, which is certainly linked t their md. In lab tests, the technlgy has prven t be ver 96% accurate at identifying six cmmn facial expressins: happiness, surprise, fear, sadness, anger and disgust.
      That said, expressins can be faked, ften even subcnsciusly (潜意识地). Fr that reasn, the app als uses real-time readings frm the temperature, humidity and bld xygen sensrs. Using this cmbinatin f data, the system is s far almst 89% accurate at identifying true emtins triggered by the viewing f varius vide clips.
