“Hw many languages d yu speak?” It seems like a simple questin, but it’s a tugh ne fr me t answer. I’ve studied six, but I dn’t speak six. I can’t cunt each language I’ve tried t learn as ne, because my cmpetence in each is different. The simplest answer is tw. Eagle-eyed readers will ntice I’m writing this in English, but I culd have cmpsed it in French.
English is like sitting, and French is like walking. I’m really gd at bth but bviusly sitting is easier. I tk Italian in cllege, and t cntinue this analgy (类比), Italian is like jgging. Artificial intelligence (AI) is being applied t help save the UK’s endangered red squirrels (松鼠). The grundbreaking technlgy, knwn as Squirrel Agent, has been trained t spt the difference between red and grey squirrels in rder t manage feeders meant fr red squirrels and ultimately, cntrl ppulatins.
The UK’s nly native squirrel, reds have been under threat since the intrductin f greys frm Nrth America in the late 19th century. Tday, greys are thught t number sme 2.7 millin vs nly a few hundred thusand reds. This is largely because greys are bigger, utcmpeting reds fr fd and territry, and carry squirrelpx, a disease deadly t reds. Cllectively, these pressures have pushed red squirrels t the edge f extinctin.
Squirrel Agent, which claims a 97 percent accuracy rate, recgnises reds by their size, shape and weight, and features such as tails, faces and ears. Feeders are then remtely pened fr reds r, fr greys, kept clsed, instead pening traps r encuraging them t cnsume pills aimed at birth cntrl.
“It’s a real shwcase f what AI can d — it’s wrking in real time t d a task that we dn’t have enugh human vlunteers fr,” says Emma McClanaghan, c-funder f Genysys Engine, which develped the system.
Prject Red Haven, as the prgramme is knwn, is being tested by five wildlife charities, including the Scttish Wildlife Trust and Ulster Wildlife. But this is just the beginning. It’s hped that the tl’s tech will evlve (发展) sufficiently t nt nly identify different species, but als individuals.
