Pstmates, an American delivery cmpany, has built a rbt, called Serve, which was designed t make shrt-distance deliveries in cities.
T knw what’s ging n, Serve has a laser radar (激光雷达) sensr n tp, in which spinning lasers let it detect bjects arund it and knw hw far away they are. Als, behind each artificial eye is a camera, with six mre imaging devices spread arund the rbt. Inside it is anther sensr that allws Pstmates t knw if there is a package in there.
“One f ur key decisins early n was t rely heavily n the rbt’s ability t see the envirnment,” says Ali Kashani, the vice president fr rbtics at Pstmates. Since the sidewalk is “a very chatic envirnment”, he pints ut, the rbt needs t be able t take it all in and figure ut what t d. This rbt, and many like it, als must be able t signal their intentins t the pedestrians. Fr that, it has a number f appraches. One is using its eyes; anther is a clrful light ring that ges arund the tp. “When it wants t make way fr a pedestrian, it will use its eyes and lk dwn,” he explains. It can als use the lights n the tp as a turn signal, which is bvius, and als lk left and right when it’s turning left and right.
“Using eye mvements and ther silent signals is a gd idea,” says Aarn Steinfeld, a prfessr f human-rbt interactin. Serve is intended fr sidewalks and Steinfeld says that envirnment is challenging. Peple usually walk fast while staring at a smartphne. Fr a rbt, that’s a lt. “We have active research n rbt mving scially arund walking peple,” he says. “And it’s really tricky t d this well.”
Pstmates plans t use Serve in Ls Angeles at first, and that its intended task is t mve small bjects ver shrt distances. The rbt can travel 30 miles n ne charge and is able t carry 50 punds.
      28. What is the specific functin f the additinal sensr that Serve has inside its bdy?
      A. T mnitr package cnditin.B. T detect if a package is inside.
      C. T measure package weight.D. T detect mvement arund.
      29. Accrding t the text, hw des Serve primarily detect and understand its envirnment?
      A. By heavily relying n its ability t see.B. Thrugh its advanced hearing sensrs.
      C. By fllwing pre-prgrammed rutes nly.D. By cmmunicating directly with pedestrians.
      30. What’s the majr challenge fr rbts n sidewalks mentined by Prfessr Aarn Steinfeld?

      B. The limited range f 30 miles n a single charge.
      C. The behavir f peple walking fast while lking at their phnes.
      D. The inability f sensrs t wrk in rainy weather.
      31. What is the main purpse f the passage?

A study by Tulane University reveals that frequent illness may accelerate brain aging and increase the risk f dementia (痴呆) r cgnitive decline. The findings highlight the imprtance f maintaining gd health t prevent infectins, especially amng the elderly and dementia-prne individuals.
The study examined aging male mice and fund that repeated, intermittent experiences with mderate inflammatin (发炎), such as that caused by the flu r a seasnal head cld, caused impaired cgnitin and disrupted cmmunicatin between neurns in thse mice.
“We were interested in asking whether differences in infectin experience culd accunt, at least in part, fr the differences in rates f dementia we see in the ppulatin,” said lead authr Elizabeth Engler-Chiurazzi, PhD. “The mice we were studying were healthy adults appraching middle age, and yet, when expsed t intermittent inflammatin, they remembered less and their neurns functined mre prly.”
This study is the first t mdel repeated, intermittent infectins in mice and examine the lng-term cnsequences fr brain functin and health.
Humans ften experience infectins and inflammatin at substantially higher rates than labratry mice. But given that impairments were bserved in mice after nly five intermittent inflammatry treatments, the cgnitive change in humans may be mre severe.
“Our mice nly experienced intermittent sickness-like inflammatin a handful f times, s the fact that we bserved impairments at all was surprising,” Engler-Chiurazzi said. “The effects were subtle, but that’s why I find these results meaningful: in a human, cgnitive impairments frm a similar number f inflammatry experiences might nt be nticeable in their daily lives but culd have accumulative effects that negatively impact the aging brain.”
The findings may have imprtant implicatins fr standard f care arund hw infectins are handled amng the elderly and thse at risk fr dementia. Ging frward, Engler-Chiurazzi said mre wrk needs t be dne t understand why infectins impact the brain and hw t mitigate thse effects. In additin, she hpes fllw-up studies will investigate whether weaker ppulatins face a higher burden f neurlgical effects. “The biggest takeaway frm this research, in ur pinin, is the imprtance f staying as healthy and infectin-free as pssible,” she said.
      32. The researchers cnduct the study in rder t_________.
      A. highlight the frequent illness is harmless t human beings.
      B. identify whether the repeated inflammatin will cause impaired cgnitin.
      C. explain the adult male mice are mre likely t have impaired cgnitive functin.
      D. shw cgnitive impairments frm a few inflammatry experiences is nt nticeable.
      33. What can we learn abut the study?
      A. The brains f these mice were unaffected by the disease.
      B. The infectins have little effect n impacting the aging brain.
      C. Humans will suffer even mre severe cgnitive decline because f the frequent illness.
      D. Researchers used t examine the effects f repeated infectins n brain functin and health.
      34. What des the underlined wrd “mitigate” in Paragraph 7 mean?
      A. relieveB. strengthenC. prmteD. emphasize
      35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
      A. The standard f care has been revealed.
      B. Mice will suffer frm impaired cgnitin by flu.
      C. We human beings shuld stay as healthy and infectin-free as pssible.
      D. The cnnectin between frequent illness and dementia has been discvered.

At the register, the cashier, a wman with tired eyes, scanned the items with practiced speed. The beeps seemed t ech in my ears.
“That’ll be $128.75,” the cashier said, her vice flat.
I tk ut my wallet, nly t embarrassingly find that I didn’t have enugh cash, being $12 shrt. My face grew warm, “I... I’m s srry,” I stammered, aviding the cashier’s gaze. I culd feel the impatient stare frm the line behind me. “I thught I had mre. I’ll just... I can put the cheese back.”
Just as I started remving items frm my cart, “Wait.” The vice frm behind was calm and gentle.
I turned. The man wh had been standing in line was perhaps in his late frties, with kind eyes and a sft smile. His expressin wasn’t ne f annyance, but f understanding. “Please, dn’t put it back,” he said, already extending a $20 nte twards the cashier. “It’ s n truble at all.”
“N, really, I culdn’t,” I insisted, my pride stinging mre than my embarrassment. “It’ s my mistake. Thank yu, but it’s fine.”
The man’s smile sftened further, “Yung man, we’ve all been there. Hnestly. It’s a few dllars. Just pay it frward ne day when yu can.” His tne was s genuine that my resistance melted away. I saw nt pity in his eyes, but a simple, shared humanity. “Let me tell yu a stry.”
“My mther is battling cancer at City Hspital,” his vice was calm but with a hint f unnticeable chke. “I’ve been visiting her with flwers — she lves fresh rses the mst, and I bring her a buquet every day t visit her. But this mrning, she gt mad and refused t accept my flwers n matter what,” he paused, lking at me sincerely. “She said I shuld use the mney t help peple wh really need it.”
