Flgers cffee, Jrdan jeans...” She gt married and had tw children, even shting ne cmmercial three days after giving birth.
But “all gd things cme t an end”, and MacCll gt divrced after 13 years f marriage. Hwever, the biggest bstacle she has vercme in life, MacCll says, is failure itself. She felt like a failure at schl, when she and her classmates were lined up in rder f their IQ scres, and als when her first marriage ended.
“It tk me a while t get ver that,” she says. “There’s a saying I like t tell myself: ‘Change the way yu lk at things, and the things yu lk at change.’ S I try t lk at failure as a mtivatr. I will get this. Scial media was my way f getting ut f the depressin. I started psting sme f the things I culd d.”
She has mre than 130,000 fllwers n Instagram, and has landed parts in films. She has just filmed her next appearance n American Ninja Warrir. MacCll believes she can cntinue t get strnger int her 80s and 90s. “Muscle is the rgan f lngevity,” she says.

When we think abut invertebrates (无脊椎动物), mst f us picture bees, wrms, r perhaps even a jellyfish. But did yu knw that at least tw-thirds f invertebrates wrk the night shift, meaning many are unlikely t be seen? They use phases f the mn and star light t learn abut the wrld and make vital decisins. Many insects use the faint glw f the mn r stars t tell which way is up when flying in cmplete darkness.
Fr centuries, artificial light has been a symbl f prgress. Light has shaped human civilizatin. But while we celebrate its cnvenience, we ften verlk the darker side f ur bsessin with illuminatin (照明): light pllutin. It’s a disruptr f ecsystems, with prfund cnsequences fr wildlife, human health and energy cnsumptin.
A 2021 study fund that caterpillar ppulatins were 52% lwer in areas with street lights. The winter mth is a small but essential species. In early spring its caterpillars prvide a critical fd surce fr blue tit chicks. But light pllutin disrients (使迷惑方向) the adult mths, disrupts mating and affects egg-laying, leading t fewer caterpillars. With declining caterpillar numbers, blue tit struggle t feed their yung.
In ne sense, light pllutin is relatively easy t fix — we can simply nt turn n the lights and allw the night t be lighted naturally by mnlight. Lgically, this is mstly nt feasible as lights are meant fr the benefit f humans wh are ften unwilling t give them up. In the absence f turning ff the lights, there are ther management appraches we can take t lessen their impact. We can limit their number; reduce their intensity and the time they are n.
The extent t which invertebrates have respnded t artificial light remains unspecified and it als remains unknwn whether they can adapt t additinal tempral changes. These changes likely affect individual fitness, s additinal studies are needed t determine the selective pressure artificial light prduces. An interdisciplinary (跨学科) apprach is required t determine brader scale effects f artificial light n wildlife bidiversity and ecsystem health, and t determine relevant strategies.
      28. What d we knw abut the majrity f invertebrates?
      A. They are active at night.B. They use darkness t hide.
      C. They are becming extinct.D. They are intelligent creatures.
      29. What des the authr want t illustrate by mentining caterpillar ppulatins in paragraph 3?
      A. The challenge in wildlife cnservatin.B. The imprtance f a balanced ecsystem.
      C. The urgency f saving species thrugh fd.D. The effect f light pllutin n the fd chain.
      30. What des the underlined wrd “feasible” in paragraph 4 mean?
      A. Odd.B. Wrkable.C. Crazy.D. Disturbing.
      31. What des the authr think f ptential management appraches?
      A. They are pineering.B. They are easy t apply.
      C. They prve t be effective.D. They call fr in-depth research.
      D
Even peple wh have never read Tlsty are ften familiar with his famus pening line t Anna Karenina: “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its wn way.” The qute is s well knwn because it resnates (共鸣) with peple’s experience, and psychlgists have investigated if it might apply t the individual as well as the cllective.
A team led by Dr Yanagisawa Kuniaki f Kbe University cmbined appraches used in psychlgy and neurscience by challenging 87 peple t imagine specific future events happening t them while lying in an fMRI machine. The sample grup was purpsely chsen t include peple with a mix f future expectatins.
The team fund participants wh were mre ptimistic shwed greater similarities in the patterns f their brain activity in a regin invlved in future-riented thinking. Meanwhile, pessimists’ brains prduced different maps frm each ther when given the same stimuli. “We’re nt saying that ptimists have identical thughts abut the future,” said Yanagisawa. “Rather, we can say that they appear t think in the same way — structurally.”
The researchers als fund that ptimistic peple shwed bigger differences between brain patterns fr emtinally psitive and negative events than pessimists did.
Many past studies have revealed benefits t ptimism such as better health. But this desn’t necessarily mean that ptimism is a gd trait and pessimism is a bad ne. The research revealed smething that might give us pause. Optimism isn’t an unquestined gd. Any ancient human ppulatin cmpsed entirely f ptimists prbably died crssing rivers because they cnvinced themselves there wuld be n crcdiles r starved because they didn’t prepare fr bad seasns. This wrk als hints at the pssibility that the individuality that cmes with pessimism lends itself t mre diverse appraches t prblems, with a greater chance that ne will succeed than the ptimists wh all try the same thing.
“The brains f ptimists may in a very physical sense share a cmmn cncept f the future. But this raises new questins. Is this shared mechanism smething they are brn with r is it wven in later?” Yanagisawa pndered (沉思). He ultimately believes this wrk can help us better understand hw peple relate t each ther and what smetimes prevents empathy.
      32. Why des the authr qute the pening line t Anna Karenina?
      A. T recmmend Tlsty’s bk.B. T intrduce the research tpic.
      C. T share Tlsty’s insights int life.D. T unlck its philsphical wisdm.
      33. It can be learnt frm the research that when imagining future events, ______.
      A. pessimists tend t be emtinalB. ptimists have the same thughts
      C. pessimists expect negative utcmesD. ptimists think alike in a structural sense
      34. What can be implied frm paragraph 5?
      A. Pessimists are effective prblem slvers.B. Pessimists have a better perceptin f life.
      C. Optimism and pessimism are interchangeable.D. Optimism can be damaging when taken t extreme.
35 What is mainly talked abut in the last paragraph?
      A. Expectatins fr future study.B. Ptential applicatin f the findings.
      C. A reasnable dubt abut the findings.D. A summary f the previus paragraphs.
