A free nline platfrm that allws speakers t practice in frnt f thusands f virtual audience has been
released t help many peple deal with their anxiety when making a speech. Dr Chris Macdnald, wh created the
nline platfrm, said the apprach was an attempt t reduce the lengthy waits r high csts peple ften face when
seeking help.
The Virtual Reality Public Speaking platfrm is based n the idea that facing fears directly can help reduce
them. It is cmbined with breathing exercises and eye mvements that help slw the heart rate and cntrl the fear
respnse. Peple using the technlgy can practice speaking in varius virtual reality (VR) settings, frm an empty
classrm r small audience f virtual figures wh feel bred and sleepy, t a stadium f 10,000 viewers, with the
ptin t add distractins such as flashing cameras and lud nises.
A recent study suggests the platfrm culd be beneficial. The research invlved 29 vlunteers frm China,
wh each finished a 30-minute sessin in which they switched between using the VR system and practicing a

simple breathing exercise. After that, they delivered a prepared ne-minute speech in English t 34 peple in real
life. The percentage f students wh said they were anxius public speakers fell frm 65% befre the experiment t
20% after the presentatins, while the percentage wh described themselves as cnfident rse frm 31% t 79%.
Mre students said they enjyed public speaking after using the platfrm.
But Cella, a psychlgist and leader f the virtual reality lab at King’s Cllege Lndn, wh was nt invlved
in the wrk, said there was a ptential risk that verdependence n the platfrm culd increase peple’s avidance
f public speaking. “There is a lt f enthusiasm and prblem-slving energy frm digital innvatrs t address
mental health challenges in ur sciety. But unfrtunately, many prducts like this platfrm have pr uptake (利
用 ) and shrt lifespan due t the rapid develpment and limited evidence,” he said. “As with any emerging
technlgy, it’s crucial t evaluate its real-wrld impact, hw peple use it, whether it truly imprves cnfidence
and reduces anxiety, and what unintended effects might arise.”
8. Wh may find this platfrm useful?
A. A graduate preparing fr a jb interview. B. A delivery driver taking a rad safety test.
C. A cach planning athletes’ training wrkuts. D. A prgrammer giving instructins t a cmputer.

10. What can we learn frm the research?
A. The number f users rse dramatically. B. The platfrm imprved users’ English ability.
C. The platfrm cntributed t users’ presentatin. D. The users practiced breathing exercise every day.
11. What’s Cella’s attitude t the platfrm?

Peple are already paying mre and mre fr fd due t glbal warming — and rising temperatures will
drive fd prices a lt higher in the next decade. Accrding t a study by the Eurpean Central Bank, by 2035,
higher temperatures alne will be pushing up wrldwide fd prices by between 0.9% and 3.2% every single year.
T find ut hw this is affecting fd prices, Maximilian Ktz at the Ptsdam Institute fr Climate Impact
Research and his clleagues examined data n the mnthly prices and weather cnditins in 121 cuntries between

temperature, temperature changes, and measures f drught and extreme rainfall, they fund a strng link between

the average temperature and the fd prices a mnth r s later. In regins nrth f 40 degrees, like the latitude (纬
度) f New Yrk City and Beijing, warmer-than-average temperatures during winter led t falling fd prices. But
abve-average temperatures increased fd prices in summer and at all times in the rest f the wrld.
“The study didn’t lk at why prices rse but the likely explanatin is that extreme heat is reducing yields,”
Ktz says. “Crps may be drying ut n the vine when they shuld be being harvested.” Factrs such as extreme
rainfall had less impact n fd prices than average temperatures. This may be because flding tends t be
lcalized, while abve-average temperatures can be very widespread.
Other studies have reached similar cnclusins. Ktz’s team then went further by investigating hw fd
prices culd change based n average temperature rises in climate mdel predictin. In the wrst situatin, glbal
fd inflatin (食品通胀) due t climate change ges ver 4% per year by 2060. “We need t be aware f the fact
that climate change brings huge new challenges fr fd security,” says Ktz. “Warming-fuelled extreme weather
is increasingly affecting fd prductin arund the wrld. If farmers dn’t adapt their practices t better cpe with
rising temperatures, the lsses will becme mre serius.”
12. What des the study fcus n?
A. The factrs in the rising living csts.
B. The impact f climate change n fd prices.
C. The effects f natural disasters n fd prductin.
D. The cmparisn f fd prices in different regins.
13. Hw did researchers reach their cnclusins?
A. By analyzing a mass f data. B. By referring t previus studies.
C. By tracking sme cities fr years. D. By cnducting a survey amng farmers.
14. What is the main reasn fr the rising fd prices accrding t Ktz?
A. Frequent rainfall. B. Extreme high temperature.
C. The increasing demand fr crps. D. The restrictins f trade plicies.
15. What des the authr intend t d in the last paragraph?
A. T investigate hw fd prices change. B. T predict the lss caused by the heat wave.
C. T urge farmers t adjust their practices. D. T clarify the situatin f glbal fd inflatin.
