A wman has recalled her childhd spent “trapped” n a bat with her parents, detailing hw she made her “escape”.
While her parents thught it was the trip f a lifetime and ften described the pprtunity as a “privilege” (特权), Suzanne has since cmpared it t being lcked up in prisn.
Nw 55 years ld, Suzanne has shared her tale f survival n the Internet, and recalled her 10 years at sea in her tell-all memir Wavewalker. Despite her father assuring her the “trip wuld be safe”, Suzanne claimed it was “incredibly dangerus”, sharing details f a dangerus jurney frm Suth Africa t Australia where the bat hit an “enrmus strm”. “The waves became bigger and bigger, and finally ne crashed ver the back f the bat,” she
recalled. “I was thrwn, a little girl at 7, against the ceiling f the cabin and against the wall, breaking my skull and nse. Three days later, we fund a tiny little island in the middle f the Indian Ocean where I had multiple head peratins withut anaesthetic (麻醉剂).”
In rder t get thrugh her “very strange” childhd, Suzanne recalled hw she determined t get an educatin
t live a nrmal life. While remte educatin wasn’t an ptin in 1969, Suzanne enrlled in an Australian crrespndence schl when she was 13. Then, when she was 16, and her brther 15, her parents enrlled the tw teenagers in a schl in New Zealand while they cntinued sailing. Despite the gaps in her educatin, Suzanne landed a spt at Oxfrd University, and after saving up mney she’d earned wrking n a farm, Suzanne bught a ne-way plane ticket back t the UK.
Since ging public with her stry, which she was inspired t d after the death f her husband in 2018, Suzanne’s bk instantly became a bestseller. Suzanne’s extrardinary tale has captured the hearts f millins. “Wavewalker is ne f the best bks I’ve read. I’m s srry yu went thrugh all that,” ne persn replied, while anther said, “Thank yu! Yur stry inspires me and I can change my life n matter when and hw.”
Hw des Suzanne find the ten-year jurney at sea?
Amusing and rewarding.B. Eventful and risky.
C. Private and plain.D. Inspiring and cmfrting.
Why did Suzanne decide t get an educatin?
T get her life back n track.B. T earn enugh mney.
C. T change her strange childhd.D. T prve her parents wrng.
What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
Suzanne’s bk is well received.B. Suzanne’s bk gets divided pinins.

Histrically, bat migratin has been a bit f a black bx. “They’re fast and they mve at night,” says Edward Hurme, a bilgist at the Max Planck Institute fr Animal Behavir in Germany. “Once they disappear frm an area, we dn’t necessarily have the ability t figure ut where they shw up again.” Bats are als smaller than many migrating birds, meaning they are unable t tlerate the weight f the srt f tracking devices that researchers attach t birds fr mnitring purpses.
S Hurme and his clleagues had t design ne. They created specialized devices weighing just ver 1g that measure hw the animal is mving, as well as temperature. Unlike sme ther devices, which measure animal mvements but must be recvered by scientists t dwnlad the data, these new nes bradcast their infrmatin t a wireless netwrk. That allws the researchers t wrk ut their psitin and fllw the bats’ jurney.
In ttal, the team equipped 71 female bats with these sensrs. When the researchers paired their tracking data with climate data, they nticed a curius cnnectin. “We fund that a lt f bats are actually migrating befre strms cme thrugh,” says Hurme. In the spring, strms typically fllw warm frnts that generate strng winds that usually blw in the right directin fr migratin.
Lng-distance migratin can take a lt f energy, but these bats have fund sme assistance. They time their springtime departure t happen at the same time as warm frnts that lead strms. These winds tend t blw in the general nrtheasterly directin f the bat migratin this time f year, giving the bats, which weigh abut an unce, a significant lift. “We nted that bats were respnding t gd wind cnditins, but we didn’t think that there was a cnnectin with strms,” Hurme says. The researchers have yet t find ut what signals the bats are using t time their departures.
Mre bradly, it is within Hurme’s visin that an increasing number f research grups begin using the tiny bat tags n ther bat species. Ultimately, that srt f wrk culd cntribute t the cnservatin f bats. By understanding when and where they migrate, researchers culd cnstruct bat migratin frecasts, which culd help energy cmpanies shut dwn turbines ( 涡轮机) during the bats’ migratry perids, r avid building in certain areas altgether, he says.
Why has bat migratin been a bit f a black bx?
Bats are t small t be detected.B. Bats’ mvement is hard t mnitr.
C. Bats fly at high speed in packs.D. Bats’ bdies are t weak fr devices.
What des the secnd paragraph mainly discuss?
The urgency f innvatin.B. The features f the new trackers.
C. The cmplexity f the particular design.D. The imprvement f researching methds. 30.Why d bats begin their migratin prir t the arrival f strms?
A. T find the apprpriate rute.B. T migrate against the winds.
C. T lwer energy cnsumptin.D. T avid the disastrus strms.
What’s Hurme’s anticipatin?
A. Research n mre species.B. Increasing prductin f turbines.
C. Wide applicatin f the new devices.D. Enhancing awareness f animal cnservatin.

A challenge f teaching mathematics rather than, say, histry is that the hmewrk is a lt harder t cme up with. After all, “Was Henry VIII a gd king?” is a reasnable questin t ask either a classrm f nine-year-lds r a lecture theatre f pstgraduates. But “Slve this quadratic equatin (二次方程式)” wuld leave the classrm nnplussed and the lecture theatre unimpressed. Maths is learned by ding and designing a prblem that is easy enugh t be accessible, yet hard enugh t be satisfying, is a big headache in itself.
Partly fr this reasn, bks that successfully cmmunicate hw mathematicians think, but are aimed at thse nt already in the field, are bth valuable and rare. Nw Sir David Spiegelhalter, prfessr f statistics at the University f Cambridge, has added t the categry with The Art f Uncertainty. His new bk will appeal t many mre than just mathematicians, fr its tpic is universal: hw t analyse chance, uncertainty and risk.
If a new virus is running wild and the majrity f deaths are amng thse wh have received a newer vaccine (疫苗), is that evidence that the vaccinatin prgram is harmful? Hw much f tp ftball teams’ perfrmance cmes dwn t luck rather than skill? Prfessr Spiegelhalter’s explratin f such questins is delightful. First, he uses them t illustrate brader ideas abut hw prbability and statistics wrk. S a discussin f vaccine safety prceeds t Bayes’s therem, a prcedure fr imprving ne’s judgment f prbabilities as new evidence cmes t light. The jy f Prfessr Spiegelhalter’s apprach is that he reaches this deep truth thrugh nthing mre than sme intuitive (直觉的) assumptins and very simple maths.
Mst imprtant, thugh, is Prfessr Spiegelhalter’s skill at cmmunicating these ideas. Much f prbability
and statistics can g against ur intuitin, and the maths behind it is ften fearsme. But this is nt a difficult bk t read r understand.
What des the underlined wrd “nnplussed” in paragraph 1 prbably mean?
A. Impressed.B. Inspired.C. Cnfused.D. Amused.
What is the biggest selling pint f The Art f Uncertainty accrding t the authr?
It casts light n math thughts.B. It cvers varius tpics.
C. It makes sense t rdinary peple.D. It satisfies maths prfessinals.
Why des the authr mentin Bayes’s therem in paragraph 3?
T prve the reliability f intuitin.B. T reveal the bk’s academic nature.
C. T underline the deep truth f judgement.D. T shw Spiegelhalter’s writing apprach.
What is the text mainly abut?
A ppular mathematician.B. A discussin f risk management.
C. An intrductin t academic teaching.D. A bk n understanding prbability.

Wildlife dcumentaries are knwn fr ffering breathtaking images f animals in their natural habitats. Yu might be thinking that these shws ffer a ttally real prtrayal f these animals-an bjective windw int their lives as they hunt, rest and raise their yung. 36 While the images we see are filmed n lcatin, many f the sunds are recrded in a sund studi and added t the prgrams later by human “Fley artists (拟音师)”.
This is an unavidable utcme f mdern wildlife filmmaking. Usually, dcumentary filmmakers can film their subjects frm a great distance, but they typically can’t get clse enugh t capture clear sunds withut disturbing the animals. Wildlife dcumentaries als tend t require large crews. 37 Fr example, crew members chatting r walking arund can be included if sunds are recrded n lcatin. In ther cases, the animals might make sunds f a frequency r vlume that mst micrphnes simply can’t capture clearly.
38 And mst f them will create the clse-up sunds f animals chewing r yawning with their wn muths. These sunds are created as the artist watches the vides, making sure they perfectly match the actins they’re paired with. 39 Animal cries — which are far t cmplex t be simulated — will have t be taken frm library recrdings.
Watching “Fley artists” at wrk n wildlife prjects gives me a thrill like the ne we get when we see hw a magic trick is dne. Admittedly, the significance f the technique ges further. 40 Sunds have the
ability t affect ur understanding f a given species.
But this isn’t quite the case.
There are sme exceptins, thugh.
The filmmakers can achieve the effects.
There will prbably be backgrund nises.
Sunds guide ur emtinal interpretatin f the things we see.
Hw it is intrduced in dcumentaries may als make a difference.
“Fley artists” will use a variety f tls t simulate (模拟) the sunds made by animals.

Smetimes things dn’t g as planned, but that desn’t mean they can’t still be wnderful in their wn way. My parents and I had spent a lng time researching summer camps nline and finally we picked ut ne where I culd design games, animate (把...制作成动画) characters, and learn ther cl cding (编程) skills.
Mm said, “I like the idea f yu using that clever brain f yurs mre, but I als hpe yu can get plenty f

Weeks later, my parents drpped me ff at the camp, which I thught wuld be a week full f nn-stp cmputer-cding fun. When I arrived at the check-in table, I met a camper f my age named Halley — he was wearing an adrable sunhat. He greeted me, “We’re in the same grup — Grup 7!” Led by an advisr, we fllwed the green arrws t the campsite.
On the way, I was surprised t find it was very cl there, filled with the fresh, wdsy smell. Halley and I talked abut ur expectatins fr the camp activities. He excitedly mentined the small animals he lved t bserve and smething abut watching the night sky.
“Yu’ve given me a great idea!” I said. “I’ll base the animated characters I design n the animals yu mentined!” Halley asked, “I’m a bit cnfused — what exactly are these characters yu’re talking abut?”
“Yu knw, the characters we’ll be designing and animating n cmputers this week!” I said. “Uh, srry, I still dn’t get it,” Halley said. “Why wuld we d cmputer stuff at a Nature Camp?”
It was then that I realized there must have been a mistake — I must have accidentally clicked n the wrng nline frm when registering! I rushed back t the welcme table right away t see if I culd switch t Tech Camp, but bviusly, it was already cmpletely full.

Para.1: When I met Halley again, I frced a smile. I tld him abut my mistake—hw I’d signed up fr Nature Camp by accident instead f Tech Camp. Halley’s eyes widened at first, but then he patted my shulder gently. “Nature Camp is awesme t!” he said, pulling ut a small ntebk filled with sketches f squirrels and fireflies. “We can watch birds at dawn, cllect pinecnes, and even stargaze tnight. Halley pinted ut a family f deer hiding behind ak trees, and I quickly tk phts with my phne—mentally nting their sft fur fr animatin details. At night, we lay n the grass, watching stars twinkle. Halley pinted ut the Big Dipper, and I imagined turning it int a magical backgrund fr my characters. By week’s end, I hadn’t tuched a cmputer, but I’d filled a ntebk with animal sketches and stry ideas. When I gt hme, I animated a little deer with a pinecne necklace—my favrite memry frm Nature Camp. Smetimes, mistakes lead t the best surprises.
