The simple act f blwing ut birthday candles carries a rich histry dating back thusands f years. The traditin dates back t ancient Greece, where peple hnred Artemis, gddess f the mn, with rund hney cakes called “nutn-gnsupahn”. Histrians like Marie Nicla suggest candlelight likely represented mnlight during lunar celebratins. “Fire represented the presence f gds acrss Ind-Eurpean cultures,” ntes Nicla. The Rmans later adpted these custms, adding candlelit cakes int birthday celebratins as their empire expanded.
By the Middle Ages, Germans develped their wn candle traditin thrugh Kinderfest, a children’s festival. Peple believed children were vulnerable (易受伤害的) t bad spirits n their birthdays. Candles burned all day, their smke carrying prtective prayers heavenward. German writer Gethe’s 1799 accunt f his 52nd birthday cake with 50 candles marks ne f the earliest dcumented uses matching mdern practice.
The 19th century saw the traditin develp quickly. Swiss recrds frm 1881 describe cakes with candles representing each year f life-the first clear dcumentatin f tday’s celebratin. Germans then brught the custm t America, where it gained new meaning: blwing ut all candles in ne breath ensured wishes cme true.
Mass prductin and media prmted the traditin wrldwide. By the 1920s, numbered candle sets began t be sld, while Disney’s 1931 Mickey Muse cartn “The Birthday Party” cemented the image in ppular culture. After Wrld War II, the fixed practice spread glbally, frm Japan adpting it in the 1950s t Hallmark cards featuring candle imagery.

Smart T.rex is fr the birds, scientists claim. We knw that Tyrannsaurus rex was strng, with strng jaws (下巴).We knw it was scary, with big teeth. But was the king f the dinsaurs als clever?
This is the questin that has divided scientists, ever since a paper was published last year that argued the dinsaur might have had intelligence cmparable t that f a mnkey. Nw, researchers frm an internatinal team have re-analyzed that infrmatin, and their findings are disappinting fr thse wh rather liked the idea that behind its sharp teeth lay a sharp mind.
The disagreement cmes dwn t hw many neurns (神经元) a T.rex had. That was the argument made last year by neurscientists frm Vanderbilt University in the U.S. By lking at the skull (颅骨) space f dinsaurs including T.rex, and mapping that n t thse f living relatives, they decided it had a brain similar t a mdern mnkey’s.
While Kai Caspar, a zlgist at Heinrich Heine University, des nt deny the scariness f the T.rex, his new study is, he believes, a crrective t the idea that scariness came with ntable cleverness. His team made sure f tw areas f disagreement with the U.S. study.
The first is abut hw much f the skull is brain. Birds pack their skulls with neurns, but reptiles (爬行动物) such as crcdiles d nt. Mst f their skulls is nt brain, Caspar says its brain lked a lt mre crcdile-like, than bird-like. The secnd disagreement is abut the thickness f brain in the part that des have neurns. Here there was mre rm fr disagreement as n sft bdy parts remained. If it has a brain like a bird’s, it might have a billin neurns. If it was like a mdern reptile, it wuld be a third f that. He thinks it is the latter.
This did nt mean it was stupid, he said, as reptiles culd perfrm difficult behavirs. “We d nt lk dwn upn it by saying it’s a reptile grade intelligence. Certainly nt. It was a difficult animal, fr sure.” Caspar said.
12. What was discvered abut the T.rex in the rethink f the ld infrmatin?
A. It was as clever as a mnkey.B. It was the king f dinsaurs.
C. It was nt as clever as expected.D. It had sharp teeth and sharp mind.
13. What is the key t deciding whether T.rex is intelligent?
A. The number f neurns.B. The space f its skull.
C. Its scariness.D. Its skull size.
14. What des paragraph 5 tell us abut the U.S. study and the new study?
A. Their achievements.B. Their disagreements.
C. Their similarities.D. Their research methds.
15. What des Caspar think f T.rex?
A. It’s clever.B. It’s heavy-headed.C. It’s simple.D. It’s respectable.
