As a freelance (自由职业的) writer, the structure f my wrkday can ften vary wildly. Smetimes, it feels as if I have t much t d — ther days, t little. Yet n matter the shape f my 9 t 5, ne thing remains cnstant: emails.
Abut a year ag, I fund my email-checking habit had becme mre distracting than usual. When wrking n my cmputer, I fund myself nervusly checking my phne fr unread emails whenever hitting a mental blck. Even wrse, during lunch r walks, that habit f checking wuld cme with me, making my breaks an extensin f the wrkday.
The little red dt n my Gmail app had becme a marker f my prfessinal image: the faster I respnded, the mre I was seen as reliable by my paymasters. By respnding t everyne immediately, I cnvinced myself I culd secure mre wrk — after all, I needed t pay my electricity bills.
Hwever, speed didn’t always mean quality. I tk n t much wrk, nt allwing myself space t reflect n the value f my utput. The cntent machine kept running, and I was busy prducing “wrd salad” nt the internet.
After a particularly crazy week f nn-stp emailing, I deleted the email app. The difference was immediately nticeable. I began t rest better. Nw, my wrkdays remain unpredictable, but I’ve realized that a lack f structure wuldn’t stp me frm setting bundaries fr myself. Uninterrupted breaks help me fcus when I return t wrk. Taking a few hurs t respnd t messages — instead f just minutes — ften makes n difference t the sender and allws me t digest requests prperly.
I am still surviving as a freelancer in a fast-paced industry, but nw I can spend my time endlessly checking my phne fr Instagram stries instead.

D.He managed t balance quality and quantity.
7.What des the authr learn after deleting the email app?

Fr mre than a decade, a team f researchers have studied the dynamics f the Greenland Ice Sheet as it respnds t a warming climate. But while much f their fcus has been n water’s impacts n ice sheet change, their mst recent research findings have verturned the rder f their thinking. Meierbachtl, Harper and their team discvered that changes in the ice sheet have a real impact n the massive grundwater system underlying Greenland.
This latest discvery ccurred thanks t a marriage f drilling techniques. Internatinal cperatrs made an angled hle 650 meters thrugh bedrck underneath a Greenland glacier (冰川) t measure grundwater cnditins under the ice. Meanwhile, researchers drilled 32 hles frm atp the glacier, thrugh nearly a kilmeter f ice, t measure water cnditins at the area between ice and bedrck, which frms an imprtant bundary cntrlling grundwater flw belw. After drilling, the team fixed sensrs in the ice clumn and at the ice sheet bed t measure ice dynamics and water cnditins as water flws under the ice.
“By studying areas cvered by ice 10,000 years ag, we have knwn that the huge mass and vast amunts f water frm melting ice can impact the underlying grundwater,” Meierbachtl said. “It’s generally accepted that the grundwater is sleeping ver decades t centuries and its respnse t ice sheet change is lng: thusands f years. But what we’ve shwn here is that it is immediate.”
This new understanding culd have imprtant subsequent effects n hw Greenland’s thinning impacts the Arctic. The thinning ice culd reduce the rate f grundwater flw t the cean, changing the water temperature and salinity (盐度) balance that is imprtant fr cean circulatin (循环) patterns. “In thinking abut the cmplex feedbacks frm Greenland’s nging change, we have really ignred the grundwater cmpnent,” Harper said.
8.Hw d the researchers feel abut the result f the recent study?
      A.Surprised.B.Dubtful.C.Satisfied.D.Disappinted.
9.What cntributes mst t the new research abut the Greenland Ice Sheet?
      A.Jint effrts frm glbal experts.
      B.Advanced sensrs tracking ice dynamics.
      C.Ideal bedrck stability fr measurements.
D.A cmbinatin f tw drilling appraches.
10.What is a misunderstanding f the grundwater under glaciers?
      A.Its cmpnent is cmplex.
B.It is inactive fr a lng time.
C.It has a very large vlume.
      D.Its temperature is changeable.
11.What des the text mainly talk abut?
A.Lng-lasting effects f glbal warming n the Arctic.
B.Water impacts n the Greenland’s permanent ice sheet.
C.Newly discvered grundwater resurces in Greenland.
D.Greenland’s grundwater changes with thinning ice sheet.
A crn plant knws hw t find water in sil with the very tips f its rts, but sme varieties, including many used fr develping high-utput crn in the U.S., appear t have lst part f that ability, accrding t a Stanfrd-led study. With climate change increasing drughts, the findings hld ptential fr develping mre drught-resistant varieties f crn.
The study, published in the jurnal Science, uncvers genetic mechanisms (遗传机制) behind “hydrpatterning”, r hw plant rts branch tward water and avid dry spaces in sil. In particular, the researchers discvered that ethylene, a plant hrmne (激素) knwn t help bananas ripen, als influences hw rts grw t seek water.
Fr this study, the researchers develped a new, simplified way t study water sensitivity in rts. They fund crn varieties adapted t ht and wet regins like Mexic were very gd at making new rt branches tward water and aviding dry areas. In cntrast, the varieties adapted t mderate regins f Nrth America frequently grew rts randmly withut distinguishing between dry and wet areas in the sil.
“Interestingly, the plants that are better at sensing where the water is are als making deeper rt systems,” said lead authr Jhannes Scharwies. “One idea is that if the plant desn’t waste time grwing rt branches int places where it desn’t find any water and nutrients, then it has mre energy t grw deeper dwn where water is mre likely.”
Genetic analyses reveal tw plant hrmnes, auxin and ethylene, play a rle in hw crn rts respnd t water. While auxin was already knwn t help cntrl this prcess, ethylene’s invlvement was a new discvery. In experiments with thale cress — a mdel plant ften used in research — the researchers fund auxin signaling prmtes rt branch develpment tward water, while ethylene stps branching when the rt is expsed t air.
Further research is needed t better understand the interactin f these genetic pathways befre crn varieties can be develped with mre drught-resistant rt systems, but the findings highlight the significance f studying these lcalized respnses at rt tips, researchers said.
12.What is the primary fcus f the Stanfrd-led study?
      A.Drught-resistant crn varieties.
      B.Ethylene’s effect n fruit ripening.
      C.Genetic regulatin f rt branching.
      D.Impact f climate change n plant rts.
13.What can be inferred frm Jhannes Scharwies’ remarks?
A.Plant hrmnes make a big difference t rt grwth.
B.Nutrients guarantee better water-seeking rt systems.
C.Rt branching cnserves energy fr higher prductin.
D.Strnger hydrpatterning was linked t greater rt depth.
14.What des paragraph 5 mainly talk abut?
      A.Mdel plants in research.
      B.Hrmnes’ rle in rt grwth.
      C.Genetic analysis methds.
      D.Findings f previus research.
15.What des the last paragraph suggest future research d?
A.Priritize develpment f new crn varieties.
B.Wrk ut the mechanisms f genetic interactins.
C.Cncentrate merely n lcalized rt respnses.
      D.Expand practical applicatins f hydrpatterning.

Yet smehw, his third attempt at a simple bwl that day still explded in the kiln (窑).
Maybe the shape was nt right, Ethan thught. Ms. Alvarez, their instructr, apprached Ethan and said with a warm smile, “Beginner’s tip. Dn’t wrry abut making it perfect.” Ethan frze. Ethan lked dwn at his hands, still lightly dusted with clay (黏土). Fr a mment, he just stared, and then realized maybe “nt being perfect” wasn’t as scary as he had always thught. Ms. Alvarez watched him, ffering gentle encuragement. With her guidance, Ethan carefully placed his newly frmed clay piece int the kiln.
“Nw,” Ms. Alvarez said t Ethan with a smile, “let’s wait.” He stepped back frm the warm glw f the kiln, a sense f quiet anticipatin settling within him. It wasn’t the anxiety abut perfectin, but a quiet curisity abut what might emerge. When the kiln finally cled and the pieces were revealed, Ms. Alvarez came ver, pride shining in her eyes. “Beautiful wrk, Ethan.” “Thank yu fr reminding me it didn’t have t be perfect,” Ethan murmured, his lips curling int a small, relieved smile. The bwl was far frm perfect. But it held its shape and was unique. Fr nce, he didn’t feel the urge t fix it, t start ver, t make it match sme invisible standard. Ethan felt a strange lightness, as if the weight f all his checklists had finally lifted.Childcare in Kandy·Prgram Fees frm $390
