Mre than 3 millin square kilmeters f the Asian elephant’s histric habitat range has been lst in just three centuries, a new reprt frm an internatinal scientific team led by a University f Califrnia San Dieg researcher reveals. This dramatic decline may underlie present-day cnflicts between elephants and peple, the authrs argue.
Develping new insights frm a unique data set that mdels land-use change ver 13 centuries, a research team led by new UC San Dieg member Shermin de Silva fund that habitats suitable fr Asian elephants have been cut by nearly tw-thirds within the past 300 years.
The largest living land animal in Asia, endangered Asian elephants inhabited grasslands and rainfrest ecsystems that nce crssed the cntinent. Analyzing land-use data frm the years 850 t 2015, the researchers describe in the jurnal Scientific Reprts a trubling situatin in which they estimate that mre than 64% f histric suitable elephant habitat acrss Asia has been lst. While elephant habitats remained relatively stable prir t the 1700s, clnial-era land-use practices in Asia, including frest decrease, farming and agriculture, cut the average habitat size mre than 80%, frm 99,000 t 16,000 square kilmeters.
The study als suggests that the remaining elephant ppulatins tday may nt have enugh habitat areas. While 100% f the area within 100 kilmeters f the current elephant range was cnsidered suitable habitat in 1700, the prprtin (比例) has since declined t less than 50% by 2015. This sets up a high ptential fr cnflicts with peple living in thse areas as elephant ppulatins change their behavir and adjust t mre human-dminated spaces.
“In the 1600s and 1700s there is evidence f a dramatic change in land use, nt just in Asia, but glbally,” said de Silva, an assistant prfessr in the Schl f Bilgical Sciences’ Department f Eclgy, Behavir and Evlutin, and funder f the nnprfit Trunks & Leaves. “Arund the wrld we see a really dramatic transfrmatin that has cnsequences that last even t this day.”
32. What did the new reprt fcus n?
A. Number f cnflicts between elephants and peple.
B. Changes f the living habitats fr Asian elephants.
C. The measures fr agricultural mdels f land-use.
D. Methds t deal with cnflicts between man and animals.
33. What’s the main cause abut the lss f the elephant habitats?
A. The increase f elephant ppulatin.
B. Peple’s living styles in the past 300 years.
C. Human activities in elephants’ ecsystems.
D. Endangered Elephants’ bad health cnditins.
34. Which can best describe de Silva’s attitude tward the envirnment?
A. Psitive.B. Indifferent.C. Tleratant.D. Cncerned.
35. What is the suitable title fr the text?
A. Cnflicts Between Elephants and Humans
B. Lss f Asian Elephant’s habitat Range
