She began experimenting with simple gemetric (几何的)frms, repeating them t create visual effects that seemed t g beynd time and space. “I thught abut hw t create smething new frm nthing, and used the highest standards f traditinal Chinese craftsmanship t bring these ideas t life,” she said.
“Wd crafting requires the investment f time,” she nted. Her exhibitin Changing the Wrld in Silence at Yishu 8, an art platfrm in Beijing, marked the highlight f a year’s reflectin. Running thrugh mid-June, the shw featured 25 pieces, 11 f which were created after her Paris residency. Amng the wrks was a vrtex-like (漩涡状的) table, which drew the viewer’s mind int a different dimensin. “We hpe all the crafts here quietly accmpany the viewers, bringing a brief mental escape and a mment f relaxatin,” described Hua.
“The changes in her wrk’s frm between mvement and stillness are prjectins f cnceptual unrest,” said Su Dan, the artistic directr f Hand f Wisdm, bserving Hua’s shift since her return. “She has lng engaged with Chinese traditinal materials and been cnstantly thinking. Beneath the Pacific lies the Clarin-Clippertn Zne (CCZ), where tens f billins f plymetallic ndules (多金属结核) are packed with cbalt (钴). Seabed-mining cmpanies prmte them as “a battery in a rck” and “the easiest way t slve climate change.” They claim that thse ndules can prvide metals fr 4.8 billin electric vehicles.
Yet this prmise threatens a bilgical treasure. Marine (海洋的) bilgists reveal the CCZ shelters ver 5,000 unique species in the darkness. The extensive mining f cbalt may lead t the lss f bidiversity. A cmpany claimed t have fund a slutin t minimize the damage t the eclgy and has already trialed a 25-tn cllectr rbt designed t harvest these ndules. Hwever, a 2023 study shws it can cause permanent destructin in the area.
Cmmercial mining is nt yet permitted in internatinal waters. The Internatinal Seabed Authrity (ISA) is still determining hw, and under what cnditins, mining shuld be allwed. After 28 years f debate, its 168 member states still lack frmal agreement. While cmpanies advcate using ndule-cllecting rbts, 437 scientists frm 44 cuntries demand an immediate stp.ISA studies cnfirm that just 10% mining f the CCZ may wipe ut 50% f its species.
Nr is it certain that cbalt mining will even be all that imprtant in car-battery technlgy. Many battery cmpanies are trying t recycle cbalt frm spent batteries. In March, several majr Eurpean carmakers jintly stated that they wuld nt buy any metals prduced frm deep-sea mining befre the envirnmental risks are “cmpletely understd”. Meanwhile, several Chinese electric vehicle prducers have already made the switch, recycling up t 95% f metals frm used batteries. “Why rush t mine the cean fr metals becming utdated?” said battery expert Gavin Harper.
On June 8, 21 marine scientists frm 8 universities finished a six-week research in the CCZ and packed up seaflr samples t take back t their labs fr further analysis. “An assessment f the mining’s impact will take years f research,” says Andrew frm Edinburgh. “I’m trying t get the best envirnmental data. And then it’s up t sciety t make the decisin t g ahead.”
8. Why are the ndules called “a battery in a rck”?
A. They cntain valuable metals.
B. They have recharging qualities.
C. They wn battery-like structures.
D. They generate renewable pwer.
9. What can be inferred abut the ISA?
A. It priritizes ecnmic interests.
B. It is guarded abut seabed mining.
C. It ppses cmmercial peratins.
D. It requires mre technical supprt.
10. What des the authr want t illustrate in Paragraph 4?
A. Deep-sea mining meets demands.
B. Carmakers reuse battery materials.
C. Battery recycling needs prmting.
D. Seabed mining fr cbalt can wait.
11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Marine Mining, a Green Slutin
B. Cbalt, the Future f Batteries
C. Ocean Metals, an Ocean Risk?
D. CCZ, the Treasure Unknwn?

Have yu ever felt s stressed that yu just srt f frze? Yur bdy ges still, yu can’t feel much but, at the same time, yur senses are wrking vertime. Yu knw yu must act sn; but it’s as if smething is stpping yu. This “freezing”, r tnic immbility in academic terms, is an adaptive defense respnse t stress r danger.
When we freeze, ur heart rate drps and ur bld pressure changes. Our pupils might becme wider. A fld f hrmnes (荷尔蒙) spread quickly, readying us fr actin. It can all happen within secnds.
While fight-r-flight seems lgical fr survival, freezing appears cunterprductive — ptentially t much t handle, making us incapable f acting r making a decisin. But is that really all that’s ging n? Nt accrding t Prf Karin Relfs, a neurscientist wh studies freezing at Radbud University. “Many peple think that freezing is a kind f shutdwn f the system,” she says. “What we actually find is that in threatening situatins, freezing actually helps gain mre infrmatin, prepare actins, and imprve perceptin and decisin-making.” Freezing acts like an emergency flw state: watchful, nt petrified.
Imprtantly, this respnse can be trained. Relfs highlights tw grups cntrlling freezing: living statues, street perfrmers maintaining extreme stillness and snipers (狙击手) requiring abslute stillness while making decisins. Lab research cnfirms this. A virtual reality shting game shwed players with strnger freezing respnses perfrmed better and decided faster. Freezing desn’t slw respnses. “Brain nise reduces. Perceptin increases. Yu make better decisins faster,” Relfs clarifies.
But let’s say yu’re nt a sniper, r dn’t spend yur weekends as a living statue. What if yu’re abut t take an exam r lead a big business meeting? Thse situatins invlving scial pressure, may nt be life r death, but still can cause freezing. The key is t use this respnse thrugh training, particularly fcused breathing: maintain slw, rhythmic exhalatin (有节奏的呼气). Instead f feeling ut f cntrl, yu can master it and — sniper r nt — take yur best sht.
12. What happens in “freezing” accrding t the text?
A. Awareness is lst.
B. The heart punds.
C. Senses are sharper.
D. The breath quickens.
13. What des the underlined wrd “petrified” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Cnfused.B. Panicked.C. Distressed.D. Occupied.
14. Why are living statues and snipers mentined in Paragraph 4?
A. T cntrast respnse types.
B. T illustrate freezing causes.
C. T supprt respnse training.
D. T criticize stressful prfessins.
15. Hw shuld students manage exam freezing accrding t the text?
A. Seek prfessinal help.
B. Apply trained breathing.
C. Hld breath t stay still.
D. Make last-minute revisins.
