Arund the turn f the 18th century, the cal-pwered steam engine was invented and used t pwer industry in Britain. When Inside Higher Educatin recently interviewed cllege students abut their reading. Ava Wherley, a bilgy majr, cmplained, “Academic texts usually use extremely cmplex language, which makes them harder t read. I have t rely n shrt vides fr cmprehensin.”
But Wherley is nt, as she believes, a visual learner. Instead, she’s just a struggling reader with a fluency at a middle-schl reading level. In this respect, Wherley has plenty f cmpany. Accrding t the study, millins f cllege students in the US have t rely n vides r AI fr their reading nwadays, largely because they struggle with reading cmprehensin beynd a basic level.
The interviewers have further revealed that students struggle with reading mainly because teachers have reduced the amunt and cmplexity f students’ reading materials in primary and secndary grades. They have fund that mst teachers in secndary educatin usually assign shrt reading passages. And, in the few classes where students read bks, they usually receive summaries, which “just ruins the whle stry,” as Wherley prtested.
“Hwever, when kids read entire nvels withut ntes r summaries, they discver the pleasures f reading. Such kind f reading gives even avidant readers the enhanced vcabulary they need t becme better readers,” the interviewers write in their reprt.
Anther majr finding frm the research is that reading frequency accunts fr 13% f the variatin between strng and weak readers in elementary grades, a difference that climbs t 30% in high schl and 34% in cllege students. Mrever, as the study has revealed, students wh read entire bks in their leisure time enjy the mst significant benefits t their reading cmprehensin.
“Despite these significant benefits, nly 14 percent f the students reprted reading in their leisure time,” the reprt cncludes. “The result perfectly illustrates the Matthew Effect: the mre they avid reading, the harder they’ll find reading. In ther wrds, students may be caught in a vicius (恶性的) cycle that ruins their success in cllege, the wrkplace, and life, including their ability t understand a cmplex argument r make an infrmed decisin.”

It’s nt just yu. A lt f peple think that the quality f results frm traditinal search engines is getting wrse. Nw, the rise f AI search engines may lead t different and perhaps better ways t lk up infrmatin if they are used prperly.
Rather than typing in a string f keywrds, AI searches shuld be cnversatinal — fr example, “What’s the average temperature in Lndn fr the secnd half f February?” r “Where are sme gd places t travel in Eurpe this summer?” If yu’re nt satisfied with an answer, ask fllw-up questins t zer in n the infrmatin needed. Sme even ffer users related fllw-up questins t get the best answer.
Unlike traditinal search results that thrw up a list f links, AI search engines prduce a readable summary f the infrmatin, smetimes with a few key links as ftntes. Of curse, the answers vary — smetimes widely — depending n the site. Answers frm Phind.cm are amng the mst readable and are cnsistently prvided in a narrative frm.
Althugh the AI search results seem like they’re written by a very cmpetent human, they’re nt always crrect. The phenmenn is called “hallucinatin”. Hallucinatins ccur frequently since these AI systems scan huge amunts f infrmatin taken frm dubtful surces and then use algrithms (算法) t cme up with well-edited answers. Sme AI search engines disclse hw their algrithms have been trained n. Others prvide few r n details.
Therefre, the best advice is t try mre than ne AI search engine and cmpare the results. And always duble check surces as we shuld d with the traditinal search engines. Fr example, at ne pint, Km, ne f the best AI search engines, insisted that Canada’s ppulatin in 1991 was abut 1 millin peple. It turned ut that the figure came frm a Wikipedia page fr the cuntry’s native ppulatin.
      32. What des the phrase “zer in n” underlined in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Get rid f.B. Narrw dwn t.C. Make up with.D. Take cntrl f.
      33. Why des the “hallucinatin” phenmenn happen?
      A. The infrmatin may be taken frm unreliable surces.
      B. Different algrithms may use different training methds.
      C. The training prcesses remain secret t the general public.
      D. Sme f the algrithms are designed by unqualified engineers.
      34. What are we recmmended t d with the AI search results?
      A. Test them at different traditinal sites.
      B. See whether they are well-edited r nt.
      C. Check them carefully at the Wikipedia page.
      D. Cmpare them with results frm ther AI sites.
      35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Where t Find the Best AI Search Engine?
      B. Limitatins f Traditinal Search Engines
      C. Hw t Use AI Search Engines Prperly?
      D. Differences Amng the AI Search Engines
