Last September, I visited a prtected wetland near my hme. Thugh I’d used binculars (望远镜), field guides and sng identificatin apps all summer while hiking, this was the first time I had nly watched birds.
I’ve always cared abut birds and have written abut them as a science writer, but the mment I decided with purpse t devte time and energy t bird-watching marked my transfrmatin int a birder. Seven mnths later, I’ve seen 452 species, learned dzens f calls, tracked rare birds, and even went lking fr wls at night.
I didn’t start frm zer. My career spent writing abut nature taught me abut the habitats; jurnalism allwed me t quickly familiarize myself with new tpics and new peple. I crwd-surced tips n scial media platfrms and went ut with experienced birders. I used tls available t beginners.
Many regard birding as just turning lives int checklist numbers, but even that is harder withut knwledge. T find the birds, yu have t knw them. And in ding that, much else falls int space.
Birding has bsted my time utdrs, pushing me t explre my neighbrhd in ways I never wuld have discvered: amazing ht spts in industrial areas, wastewater treatment plants, and randm parks. I seem imperius t heat, cld, hunger, and thirst. My mind quiets, fcusing nly n the present.
I als feel a much deeper cnnectin t nature, which I’ve lng written abut but always remained slightly distant frm. Every bird I meet gives clr and sund t the facts I nce knew nly frm bks. Birds I assumed lived far away — glden eagles, cranes — have all appeared within an hur f my huse.
Peple call birding an escape frm reality. I reject that. Instead, I see it as invlvement with the true reality. I dn’t need t knw scial media drama when I can spend an hur hunting fr a rare bird. The chice is bvius.
Spring is cming. New birds will sn fld the Bay Area. I can’t wait.
24. What is paragraph 1 mainly abut?

C. The difficulties f birding withut guidance.

A. Extremely afraid f.B. Strngly ppsed t.

Just as damaged teeth can be replaced with gld crwns (人造冠),scientists are explring hw gld can be used t repair damaged parts f the brain.
Scientists at Linkping University in Sweden said that a “brain f gld” might just be what we need t fight nervus system diseases. The plan is t put gld electrdes (电极) int the affected part f the brain. They will act as “telephne peratrs” between nerve cells and electrnic medical devices, enabling cmmunicatin s that the nervus system can functin nrmally.
Treatment plans that invlve cnnecting medical devices t the brain already exist. Hwever, the electrdes used are usually made f hard metals, while the brain is like a jelly that “shakes” at the bdy’s slightest mvement.
“As the bdy is cnstantly in mtin, achieving clse cntact between smething that is hard and smething that is sft and breakable becmes a prblem,” explained Klas Tybrandt, ne f the scientists.
This is why the Swedish scientists are using a new material called “gld nanwires” (金纳米线). As the name suggests, these are lng, extremely thin gld threads-1,000 times thinner than human hair. By putting them int rubber, the scientists have successfully created electrdes that are sft enugh t cnnect cmfrtably with the human brain.
Gld can be made int structures as small as nanwires. Accrding t Live Science, gld can be stretched, pressed r even rlled int all kinds f shapes withut breaking. What’s mre, gld desn’t react with ther chemicals in the human brain, making it a safe chice. Once placed in the brain, gld nanwires can last fr at least three years, which is lnger than many materials currently in use.
28. What rle will gld electrdes play in treating nervus system diseases?
A. Replacing damaged nerve cells.
B. Serving as a cmmunicatin link.
C. Activating different brain regins.
D. Prtecting the brain’s unaffected parts.
29. What can we learn abut gld nanwires?
A. They are harder than rubber.
B. They are as thin as human hair.
C. They can be placed int the brain.
D. They are in the final stage f develpment.
30. Why is gld a safe chice fr use in the brain?
A. It can be stretched by the brain.
B. It can be made int varius shapes.
C. It is being used t create sft electrdes.
D. It has n negative impact n the brain’s functins.
31. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. The unique prperties f gld nanwires.
B. The histry f gld use in the medical field.
C. The current applicatins f gld in the brain.
D. The ptential use f gld in nervus system treatment.
D
While we might like t think we wuld rush t smene’s assistance, we knw frm studies that ften peple hang back and this can have tragic cnsequences.
One f the mst famus examples f this is the tragic case f Kitty Genvese wh was fatally stabbed (刺伤) in Kew Gardens, New Yrk, in 1964. Subsequent investigatins cncluded that several peple saw r heard what was happening, but did nthing t intervene. This has been termed the “bystander effect”—a well-knwn psychlgical phenmenn where individuals are less likely t ffer help t smene when ther peple are present. The mre peple there are, the less likely they are t help.
There are varius factrs cntributing t this effect—peple think that thers will get invlved r intervene. Afterwards peple ften say they did nt feel qualified r senir r imprtant enugh t be the ne t intervene. It is als partly dwn t “pluralistic(多元化的)ignrance”— since everyne is nt reacting t the emergency, they dn’t need t either; it’s nt serius because n ne else is ding anything. After a serius incident where peple have been affected by the bystander effect, they are ften s hrrified that they didn’t d anything—they can’t believe they had nt realized it was mre serius r that they didn’t think t get invlved.
The imprtant thing t understand thugh is that ther studies have shwn that nce peple are aware f the bystander effect, they are less likely t be affected by it. Self-awareness is the best apprach t it. When cnfrnted with an emergency, think t yurself hw yu wuld behave if yu were n yur wn. Ignre everyne else and hw they are behaving and g with yur curage—if yu’d call an ambulance, d it. If yu’d run fr help, d it. If that’s hw yu wuld have behaved when yu were n yur wn, then that’s prbably the right curse f actin.
32. Why des the authr mentin “the tragic case f Kitty Genvese” in paragraph 2?
A. T present a fact. B. T cnfirm a finding.
C. T predict a cnclusin. D. T illustrate an apprach.
33. Influenced by the bystander effect, peple may ______.
A. feel cnfident t intervene.
B. tend t help peple in need.
C. be well aware f bad cnsequences.
D. feel shcked after a serius incident.
34. What des the authr suggest peple d when faced with an emergency?
A. Think twice. B. Fllw thers.
C. Step in at nce. D. Take actin cautiusly.
35. What can be inferred frm the awareness f the bystander effect and peple’s helping behavir?
A. Awareness eliminates the pssibility f peple being influenced by the effect.
B. Awareness reduces the likelihd that peple will hld back frm helping.
C. Awareness makes peple verestimate their ability t handle emergencies.
D. Awareness leads peple t rely mre n thers’ reactins in emergencies.

Nwadays, meaningfully cnnecting with new peple is n mean achievement. Frm the decline f the ffice t the rise f single-ccupancy flats, ur scial lives are being taken away. 36 Their ads prmte the safety and cnvenience f staying hme and nt seeing r talking t anther human.
It wasn’t always like this. 37 Yu’ll see cafes, nightclubs, buses and trains filled with life and cnversatin. Peple talk t ne anther. Yet persistence paid ff when the ice was finally brken by Graham, a fellw resident f my little neighbrhd. We gt chatting ne day while he was smking n his drstep. I mentined being a writer, and he paused, taking a lng drag n his cigarette, and said, “Wrds are t the mind what exercise is t the bdy.” That prfund insight immediately pened a channel between us. 40 Thse encunters, brn frm a cnscius effrt t cnnect, have gradually wven warmth and familiarity int the fabric f my daily life.
