Neurns (神经元) have been discvered in mice that help their brains track and recver frm sleep debt. If a similar pathway exists in humans, it culd help treatments fr sleep disrders.
T find ut mre abut hw the brain tracks sleep lss, Mark Wu at Jhns Hpkins University in Maryland and his clleagues mapped brain pathways that are invlved in sleep in mice by putting a tracer (示踪剂) int 11 brain areas knwn t induce sleep.
The tracer, which travels frm neurns receiving signals t thse sending them, revealed 22 regins with cnnectins t at least fur sleep-prmting areas f the ttal 11.
The researchers fcused n 11 previusly unidentified regins. Using a technique called chemgenetics, they gave mice specialized drugs that activate particular parts f their brains. They divided the mice int 11 grups f three t fur individuals, activating a different area in each grup.
A regin called the thalamic nucleus reuniens (TNR) seemed t be key. When neurns in this area were stimulated, the mice experienced the greatest increase in nn-rapid eye mvement (REM) sleep — abut twice the amunt as mice that weren’t stimulated. Hwever, it tk several hurs fr the animals t fall asleep after stimulatin, during which they seemed t prepare fr rest, fr example, by making their nests sft. This suggests these neurns aren’t an n-and-ff switch fr sleep, but instead induce sleepiness. In anther test, deactivating these neurns in six mice whse sleep was deprived (剥夺) made them less sleepy.
“The findings suggest this brain regin drives sleepiness and starts restrative sleep after sleep lss,” says Wu. Develping therapies (治疗) that target these neurns culd lead t new treatments fr hypersmnia, a sleep cnditin featuring mre than enugh sleepiness after rest.
8. What was the aim f Mark Wu’s team’s research?
A. T cure sleep prblems in mice.
B. T learn hw the brain mnitrs sleep lss.
C. T check if a new drug helps mice sleep better.
D. T find similarities between human and muse sleep.
9. What des the underlined wrd “induce” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. Reduce.B. Prevent.C. Observe.D. Cause.
10. What can be knwn abut the TNR?
A. It directly cntrls when sleep starts r stps.
B. Stimulating it makes mice g t sleep right away.
C. Stimulating it leads t a big rise in nn-REM sleep.
D. Deactivating it makes sleepy mice feel mre lively.
11. What des the last paragraph mainly talk abut?
A. The ptential applicatin f the finding.
B. The prcess f testing sleep recvery in mice.
C. The causes f cmmn sleep disrders in humans.
D. The differences between human and muse sleep.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. A
