Dlphins dn’t have hands, but studying their “handedness” reveals an dd feature f human perceptin.
Humans and many animals shw lateralizatin (偏侧优势) , preferring ne side ver the ther in varius activities.
This is linked t asymmetrical (不对称的) brain functin, with different tasks prcessed in different hemispheres.
Fr example, language is usually prcessed in the left hemisphere, while spatial infrmatin is prcessed in the
right.
When studying lateralizatin in animals, researchers lk at behavirs like which hand mnkeys use t grab
bjects r which pa w dgs use t knck fd ut f cntainers. But what abut dlphins? They dn’t have hands
r paws. Instead, researchers lk at ther types f asymmetries, such as sensry biases (which eye they use fr
different tasks) and turning biases (which directin they prefer t turn).
Turns can be tricky t study because different animals mve in different ways. Fr example, humans turn
arund a vertical axis, while dlphins can turn in three-dimensinal space. This led t cnfusin when researchers
tried t determine whether a dlphin was turning “right” r “left.” They realized that humans interpret the directin
f spinning differently based n the animal’s rientatin (定向). T slve this, they develped the Right-Fingered
Spin (RiFS) and Left-Fingered Spin (LeFS) cding system, inspired by the “right-hand rule” in physics. This
system allws researchers t accurately cde turning behavirs regardless f the animal’s rientatin.
Using this system, researchers studied 26 dlphins and fund that, cntrary t previus claims, dlphins d nt
have a general rightward asymmetry. This shws that scientific prgress can cme frm realizing prblems in ur
methds and finding new ways t lk at things.
12. What is the main purpse f the passage?
A. T explain why dlphins are right-handed.
B. T intrduce the cncept f lateralizatin in animals.
C. T describe the challenges f studying lateralizatin in dlphins.
D. T discuss the develpment f a new cding system fr studying animal behavir.
13. Why did researchers develp the RiFS/LeFS cding system?
A. T prve that dlphins are right-handed.
B. T replace the “right-hand rule” in physics.
C T shw that dlphins have n lateralizatin.
D. T accurately cde turning behavirs in different animals
14. What can be inferred abut previus studies n dlphin lateralizatin?
A. They were cmpletely accurate.
B. They used a cnsistent cding system.
C. They may have been misled by inaccurate interpretatins.
D. They fcused nly n sensry biases.
15. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A. The Mystery f Dlphin Handedness. B. Human Perceptin’s Unusual Features.
C. Understanding Animal Lateralizatin. D. The Right-Fingered Spin System.

Why an Early Start Is the ‘Quintessence f Life’
Research published in the jurnal Emtin shws that early risers enjy a mre psitive md and better

Early rising is really the secnd part f tw habits: ____17____. This prbably seems like the easier habit t

Or they simply find it hard t turn ff their mental machine. Fr this issue, a
cnsistent bedtime rutine and reducing screen time-can help t earlier sleep.
____18____.
One reasn peple struggle t rise early is because they aren’t required t d s. When there is n penalty fr
versleeping, it is all t easy t hit the snze buttn and cntinue sleeping. Setting a fixed mrning cmmitment,
like a wrkut r an early class, increases the “cst” f staying in bed. Even a trivial task immediately after the
alarm can discurage further sleep, gradually transfrming a habitual night wl int an early riser.
Make early rising divine (神圣的).
Many religins use the time befre dawn fr prayer and wrship (崇拜), believing the quiet mrning brings
peace and clear thughts. ____19____. By rising early, yu welcme a new day full f energy and hpe. This

strength.
Fr the early risers amng us, this means a befre dawn rutine will start t becme a true part f yur life by

上文“The benefits f getting up early are clear.(早起的好处是显而易见的)”提到早起的好处是显而易见的,
结合下文“Here are a few things t keep in mind(以下是一些需要记住的事情)”可知,空处需过渡到具体行动

上文“Early rising is really the secnd part f tw habits(早起其实是两种习惯的第二部分)”强调早起是两种

上文“Many religins use the time befre dawn fr prayer and wrship (崇拜), believing the quiet mrning brings
上文“It felt pretty bad t leave ur warm bed when it was still dark.(天还没亮就离开温暖的被窝感觉很不好)”

故填 that。
