The Paris museum - the Pmpidu Centre - has a secure place in the heart f Paris and in Parisians’ hearts. But it wasn’t always the case.
“When it was first built, the reactin was ne f disbelief,” said Serge Lasvignes, president f the Pmpidu Centre. “Le Mnde newspaper wrte the museum’s cnstructin brught shame n Paris, and city pliticians thught their mney had been ttally wasted,” said Lasvignes. Critics said it lked like an il refinery (炼油厂).
France’s first museum entirely devted t cntemprary art saw the light f day thanks t the determinatin f ne man - Gerges Pmpidu, an art lver wh served as France’s president frm 1969 t 1974.
In 1971, he started an internatinal cmpetitin t build the museum, riginally knwn as the Centre Beauburg. The winning team, which included three yung architects frm Britain and Italy, was cmpletely unknwn at the time. Renz Pian and Richard Rgers, the tw architects wh saw the prject thrugh, made the plan a reality.
“They didn’t think they had a chance t win. S they thught they might as well d exactly what they wanted,” Lasvignes said.
“The design tk everyne by surprise and it was cmpletely different frm any ther museum. Smene said t Pian, ‘Yur thing is terrible - with the escalatr (自动扶梯) n the utside, it lks like a supermarket!’” Lasvignes added.
Frty years later, the museum still tries t make culture available t everyne, Lasvignes said.
