Cats have many heightened senses, but their sense f smell is quite impressive. They use their nses t assess their envirnment and lk ut fr any signs f danger. They will sniff ut specific areas befre they chse a place t relax. Hwever, anther way the cats are able t distinguish between situatins is by lking fr familiar smells. Yur cat will likely smell yur face and stre the smell in its memry and use it t recgnize yu in the future. That's why mst pet cats are able t tell immediately if their wners were arund any ther cats, which they dn't usually like.

Scientists frm UNSW Sydney have develped a grundbreaking methd t tackle the cmmn prblem f “frever chemicals” in water. These chemicals, knwn scientifically as plyfluralkyl substances (PFAS), are difficult t break dwn, causing significant envirnmental and health risks. The new methd invlves a nvel catalyst (催化剂) system that prmises a mre efficient and sustainable slutin, fr breaking dwn these cmpunds.
PFAS are widely used in varius industries due t their resistance t heat, water, and il. They’re fund in prducts such as ckware, fd packaging and clthing. Their widespread use has led t glbal pllutin f water surces and sil. A study has shwn that almst half f America tap water is plluted with alarming levels f PFAS, raising cncerns abut their envirnmental and health impacts. PFAS are called “frever chemicals” because their stable chemical structure makes them resistant t degradatin. That means they persist in the envirnment and accumulate in the human bdy, ptentially leading t harmful health utcmes.
Current methds t remve PFAS frm water such as activated carbn absrptin have significant deficiencies. Activated carbn can absrb PFAS but requires burning t destry the chemicals, which is envirnmentally harmful. Oxidizing agents can break dwn PFAS int smaller, mre persistent structures, cmplicating the remval prcess. These methds are inefficient and nt envirnmentally friendly, highlighting the need fr better slutins.
The catalyst system develped by Dr. Jun Sun can break the strng carbn-fluride (强碳氟键) bnds in PFAS, using nan zer-valent metals (纳米零价金属) cmbined with a catalyst inspired by the structure f vitamin B12. The system was tested n cmmn PFAS cmpunds like branched PFOS, shwing impressive results.
Dr. Sun explained, “The new system we’ve develped shws successful PFAS measures t slve water pllutin in the lab, which we hpe t eventually test at larger scales.” Within five hurs, the new methd achieved a 7% breakdwn f PFAS, significantly utperfrming existing B12-based catalysts, which managed less than 8% breakdwn in the same perid.
While further research is needed befre the methd can be applied n a large scale, the team is ptimistic. They plan t cnduct mre tests and explre integrating the catalyst int electr-chemical cells fr brader applicatin.
8.What d we knw abut PFAS?
A.They are cmmn chemicals.
B.They are harmless cmpunds.
C.They are widely used in agriculture.
D.They damage the earth in many aspects.
9.Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd “deficiencies” in Paragraph 3?
A.Strength.B.Shrtcming.C.Difference.D.Diversity.
10.What is the team’s plan fr the future f the new methd?
A.T find ther substitutes f PFAS.
B.T apply it n a large scale immediately.
C.T test it mre befre putting it t use widely.
D.T develp new chemicals having similar features.
11.What is the main pint f the passage?
A.“ Frever chemicals” in water can be brken dwn.
B.A catalyst system is saving human frm disasters.
C.Plluted water will be safe t drink in the future.
D.PFAS can be used in mre industries in future.
My name is Lucas van der Zee and I’m wrking at Wageningen University, the Netherlands. Farming tday is nt sustainable, with its greenhuse-gas emissins and its destructin f wildlife habitats. Agriculture nw takes up half f Earth’s land surface at the expense f these habitats. Therefre, I hpe t restre current farmland t its natural state by ending the vegetatin stage f crp-grwing.
Develping sustainable fd prductin will require multiple appraches. My PhD research at Wageningen University in the Netherlands is inspired by alternative, indr methds f fd prductin, such as farming leafy green vegetables vertically (垂直地) and grwing meat in a labratry. I wndered if yu can grw meat withut an animal, can yu grw fruit withut a plant? This culd be dne inside, which might help us t return sme agricultural land t nature.
During my master’s prgramme in agricultural engineering, I discussed indr fruit prductin with my prfessr. He invited me t write a master’s thesis (论文) n the subject f grwing fruits withut the plant. Nw, we’re testing this idea.
The main task f my PhD is t cllect immature (不成熟的) fruit r flwers frm tmat plants, and try t grw them int healthy, high-quality tmates in the lab. Ultimately, we want t prduce fruit frm tmat cells, frm which new plant rgans can grw and skip using a plant entirely.
I have achieved sme f the early results f my research, when I was testing different grwing cnditins at different stages f tmat develpment. The lighting is an energy-efficiency measure; we use blue and red LEDs, the best clurs fr phtsynthesis (光合作用).
Sme peple get excited abut the pssibilities f my wrk, but mst are hesitant, which I understand. In the past, peple have rushed int using fd technlgies, such as cage-grwn chickens and the extensive use f synthetic fertilizer, withut cnsidering the ptential disadvantages. An imprtant part f my PhD prgramme will be t assess the sustainability f my methd.

14.Hw des the authr prduce tmates?
A.By using nly a little agricultural land.B.By using much sun fr phtsynthesis.
C.By making use f cells frm tmates.D.By making use f a whle plant.

A.Unclear.B.Dismissive.C.Dubtful.D.Apprving.
Tennis is an incredibly mental sprt. 16 But it is als an incredibly difficult sprt t play well.
It is very easy t self-destruct (自我毁灭) when playing tennis if yu let yur expectatins and eg get the better f yu. S, simply playing the ball that is in frnt f yu is the simplest way t apprach the game, alng with taking each pint at a time.
That being said, it is much easier said than dne. 17 Even if it is as simple as playing t yur ppnent’s backhand as much as pssible, r aiming t hit as many crss curt (对角线球) balls as yu can, it is imprtant t have a plan f attack if yu want t be successful n the curt.
18 Yu may have the best plan in the wrld, but if yu aren’t perfrming well enugh t execute it r yur ppnent cttns n (领悟) what yu’re trying t d, yu’ll need t adapt, imprvise and vercme. Adapting t new cnditins, curt surfaces, balls and playing styles is all part f becming a better tennis player!
19 This means yu need t be incredibly resilient (坚韧的) t play gd tennis and vercme hardship. Dn’t be t much bthered by sme pints yu lse. Just learn frm yur mistakes but nt let them get yu dwn.
Tennis is als abut playing the big pints well and understanding that nt all pints hld the same weight acrss the curse f a match. Putting disappintment behind yu and trying t play the next pint with a psitive attitude can be very difficult t d. 20
A.Hwever, being flexible is als imprtant.
B.Yu will always have t have sme frm f strategy.
C.Hwever, it is a key part f becming a better tennis player.
D.It can bring with it a whle hst f physical and mental benefits.
E.Every backhand sht yu hit is what yu thrw at yur ppnent.
F.Perhaps the mst bvius benefits tennis ffers are the physical nes.
G.The scring system in tennis means yu can win mre pints and still lse a match!
