Walking arund large cities in Eurpe and the United States, yu’d be frgiven fr thinking that we’re living in a wrld f affrdable and effrtless mbility fr all, with the smartphne in yur pcket, with a variety f shared mbility — shared bikes and electric cars, and an Uber r Lyft never mre than five minutes away.

They tend t gather in urban areas, and are ften inaccessible t peple with reduced mbility r thse traveling with yung children needing child seats.

In Antarctica, my team really wanted t capture the mment when emperr penguin (企鹅) chicks jump int the cean fr their first swim. We had been in Antarctica fr tw mnths befre it was time fr these chicks t fledge. Fledging is when birds grw feathers that help them fly r, in the case f penguins, swim. Mm and Dad have headed ut t sea fr gd, and the five-mnth-ld chicks are realizing their parents aren’t cming back: They must hunt fr themselves. S these penguin “teenagers” frm little grups and start waddling (摇摆) tward the sea tgether. The yung penguins lk messy as they shed the sft feathers that keep them warm and grw ut their adult swimming feathers. Each has a unique by-band-style haircut.
The penguins must walk abut 15 miles frm the hme atp an enrmus ice shelf t reach the water’s edge. We fllw the birds frm afar n snwmbiles. They crwd tgether at the end f the path and stare dwn like, “what’s that?” They’ve never seen the cean befre! T my amazement, I see several hundred chicks gather at the edge f a 50-ft ice cliff! They stand tgether fr fur hurs, staring at the rugh water belw. Finally ne chick steps in frnt f the thers, waddles t the edge f the cliff and dives ff the side. I watch in fear, afraid the bird wn’t resurface in the water after the lng fall. But then it makes it, back up! It swims farther ut t sea, never lking back.
At first the ther penguins are like “Oh my gsh, what did Steve just d?” But then they realize it’s safe t jump. They begin t pur ff the cliff, several little sft balls at a time. Sme jump ff stylishly, and thers slip and fall backward. Sme even flap their wings as if they’ll fly. This dive is their entrance int adulthd. They’ll swim ut t sea and wn’t return t the hme fr several years. Hw lucky we are t see this huge mment in their lives.
24. What des fledging mean fr penguins?

I’ve always lved bks. When I was a child, I wuld bring them everywhere. I became a reader in the absence f digital audibks, and they never really entered my wrld f reading. Nevertheless, with the rise f smartphnes, audibks have explded in ppularity, and as with any new interest, new criticisms have risen in respnse — audibks aren’t really bks, and that listening t them isn’t really reading.
I’ll admit, I used t think that audibks “didn’t cunt” because yu culd listen t them passively. One f my biggest annyances is wandering during an audibk and realizing I have n idea where I stpped paying attentin. And I’m als still a print bk lver — I hate ebks, and I nly use them when it’s tugh t get a bk any ther way.
But I have grwn t lve audibks fr the distinct advantages they ffer — fr example, sme have vice actrs d distinctive vices fr different characters, r actually put meldy t sngs that nly have lyrics in the written text. A great example is Cary Elwes’ As Yu Wish: Incnceivable Tales frm the Making f The Princess Bride. Elwes narrates the bk himself, and brings ther actrs frm the film like Mandy Patinkin and Rbin Wright frm the film t narrate their wn sectins. That’s just an experience yu’re never ging t get with a paperback (平装书).
Smetimes I prefer an audibk. It’s the nly way t read if I’m n a lng drive r if I want t d multitasks. Smetimes I prefer a bk. I lve the way bks feel in my hands, I lve flipping pages, and I lve cllecting bkmarks.
Engage with bks hwever yu want. Buy them, get them frm the library, brrw them frm friends, dwnlad them nline, it desn’t matter. Dn’t we have better uses fr ur time than t pick apart hw ther peple take in infrmatin?
28. What is paragraph 1 mainly abut?
A. An issue abut audibks.B. An pinin abut print bks.
C. A reading stry in childhd.D. A ppular belief f digital reading.
29. What did the authr think f audibks befre?
A. Listening t them was really reading.
B. Listening t them was a passive invlvement.
C. He knew where he was when listening t them.
D. He thught it easier t find them than print bks.
30. Why des the authr mentin Cary Elwes’ audibk?
A. T intrduce its actrs.B. T shw his reading preference.
C. T highlight its unique features.D. T share his reading experience.
31. What can we learn frm the last tw paragraphs?
A. It’s beneficial t chse ne reading way.
B. It’s useful t knw abut thers’ reading time.
C. It’s necessary t btain varius reading resurces.
D. It’s practical t use different ways f reading bks.

Crrecting the gigabytes (千兆字节) f digital misinfrmatin that circulate at high speed nline is a never-ending task. YuTube remved mre than half a millin channels last year fr bradcasting misinfrmatin. The pwerful fact-checking rganizatins that try t keep the Internet hnest face mre claims than they can handle. Hw shuld they priritize?
Checkers came up with a new apprach: frecasting which claims are mst dangerus and thus which mst deserve t be put under the micrscpe. Researchers frm the University f Westminster develped a classifying system t srt dangerus misinfrmatin frm everyday nnsense.
One test f a false claim is whether enugh peple will believe it s that it can cause any harm. T swing an electin with misinfrmatin, yu need t persuade many peple; t fl smene with fake medicine yu need t cnvince nly ne. Anther test is whether thse believing a false claim have the capacity t act n it. Sme peple may be misled that Wi-Fi signals can kill plants, fr example, but are unlikely t change their behaviur. The researchers estimated that, f the false claims in their sample, 57% were unlikely t cntribute t any specific real-wrld effect.
Of the remaining, ptentially cnsequential misinfrmatin, the checkers cnsidered whether the cnsequence wuld be “direct”—such as persuading peple t buy certain kind f gds, r “cumulative”, cntributing t a false narrative abut s-called success science, say. The claims were rughly evenly divided. “Cumulative” harm is harder t assess in a shrt time, says Peter Cunliffe Jnes f the University f Westminster, but large data sets make it pssible t see hw ften a claim is repeated, and thus when a narrative is frming.
Time devted t selecting which false claims t check is prbably well spent. It takes five minutes t srt a claim, whereas carrying ut a thrugh check takes five t six hurs. The fact-checking wrld needs t get mre systematic in its apprach, says Mr. Cunliffe Jnes. “If this cmmunity is ging t learn anything frm this ... it’s that data is the future.”
32. What is the main challenge fact-checking rganizatins meet?
A. Lack f prfessinal fact-checkers.
B. Difficulty in accessing reliable data.
C. Resistance frm scial media platfrms.
D. The verwhelming amunt f infrmatin.
33. In which case may a false claim be classified int “mst dangerus”?
A. It targets rdinary peple.B. It brings abut an actin.
C. It disguises itself with science.D. It spreads n many scial media.
34. What is the clsest in meaning with the underlined wrd “cumulative” in paragraph 4?
A. Equal.B. Cmplete.C. Gradual.D. Instant.
35. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A. It’s up t data t keep the Internet hnest.
B. Mst false claims require thrugh checks.
C. It wastes t much t classify misinfrmatin.
D. Selecting matters mre than thrugh checks.

Eighth grade meant a new classrm and a new teacher, but I barely nticed the change. As far as I was cncerned, a classrm was a classrm. I lnged t be utside, wandering the hills f Tennessee where I grew up.
My teachers didn’t appreciate hidden caves, running creeks (小溪) and wild bears any mre than I appreciated maths, histry and gd handwriting. My reprt cards always included ntes, like “Duglas needs t apply himself instead f lking ut f the windw.”
My parents tried their best with me, but schl hadn’t been a big part f their lives either. They left after the third grade. “He’ll grw ut f it,” Daddy said when yet anther teacher had cncerns abut me being t much f a dreamer.
The rugh land, the wildlife, and the adventure had back then mre fr me t dream abut while chained t my eighth-grade desk. It seemed there were tw kinds f peple in the wrld: thse wh belnged in the classrm and thse wh belnged in the muntains. The teacher, Miss Ck seemed t knw which ne I was and had put me as far away frm the windw as pssible.

The class laughed, but Miss Ck did nt. “That’s very clever,” she said. “I think yu shuld stay after schl and share mre f yur cleverness.”
I sighed. My jke was ging t keep me where I didn’t belng. That’s the way it was with teachers. They never missed a chance t remind me f that.
As sn as the bell rang, I tk ut my ntebk t get a head start n writing I will nt be clever in class 200 times. But Miss Ck had smething else in mind. She called me t the frnt and tld me t sit facing her. “I want yu t tell me what yu lve abut the wrld utside that windw,” she said.
